How A Union Pacific Railroad Turntable Works! Big Boy & 844 Steam Train Reversing In Yard!
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 23 авг 2024
- Union Pacific railroad turn table in use. Big Boy steam engine and 844 backing their train into the UPRR yard. These trains are in Evanston, Wyoming. The turn table and railroad round house are restored and the operator showed me how the turn table works and ran it all the way around while I rode on it. Inside of the round house is also shown. I came here to film the Big Boy steam locomotive double heading with 844 but I also filmed the turntable and some huge UP freight trains. See my other videos from this trip filmed May 12, 2019. I have a steam locomotive play list with several videos of Big Boy in Utah. The UP mainline through Utah gets 50-60 trains a day and their main frequency is 160.515 for you scanner lovers like me. Brings back many wondrous memories of my childhood, as the son of a Railroader. He worked for the Union Pacific RR and we lived in Railroad Housing. Traveled on passenger trains, whenever and wherever we wanted; for Free. Didn't much need a car. Could go to town for groceries and travel to visit friends and relatives, and all Free. Just hold up our flag when the train approached; it would stop and we'd climb aboard and when we got to where we were going, just pull a cord and they'd stop and we'd get off. My mother took hot lunches to my father, when he was far out and my brother and I would Babysit the Station Master, till my mother returned. Every Station Master had a drawer in his desk, that was always filled with candy bars, who knew? Miss Those Days of Old, which I am Now. 🚂🛤🇺🇸🌙🏳
P.S.: All locomotives back then, were coal-fired and steam powered, smoke and fire breathing Giants.
Just Awesome, is All I can say.
Very cool story. You make RUclips that much more interesting. Blessings on you and yours.
Wow, that is awesome! I wish I could have seen those days. I love reading stories like that
@@billtimmons7071 I love those kinds of comments. It makes it worth while
Awesome childhood memories.
Harvey Peters I had a friend that lived on a main line. His stop was called Shake Ragg.
I remember from my time as a child, standing on the front seat (we didn't have car seats and seat belts in those days), on a trip to Omaha, Nebraska. Mom excitedly pointed to a smoke cloud on the horizon saying that these are the last days of steam engines and there was one of the last ones where that smoke was. Maybe 1960 but it is nearly lost in the great encapsulated groups of memories. I've seen the 844 sitting on the tracks but couldn't stay for the movement. We have a great railroad museum with a UP Big Boy and I have always been attracted to it's majestic presence. I would have loved to have seen in person the Big Boy in this video rolling down the tracks in its steamy glory.
What a wonderful video, you really knocked it out of park,so glad to see the roundhouse restored 😀 and the union pacific steam program, they really are America's railroad, thank you
I never been to this spot, but have through Google maps. 4014 is amazing steam locomotive. 4004 is at Holiday Park a few blocks away from this location. 4005 is in Denver museum. 4005 was the only Big Boy in a accident from my understanding. One of the workers had switched the tracks while 4005 was coming at 50 mph. It hit the turn too fast and 4005 had fallen on it's side. The tender slammed into the cab and killing 2 engineers while the 3rd one died shorty after at the hospital. I had the chance to see 4005 in Denver and 4014 the Greeley Co. It was so amazing to have seen both of them. 4014 horn was so loud that it scared the cramp out of a few of us.
Hi jaw tooth, my dad was the fireman on the 844 & 3985 in the 80s and 90s my mother has tons of memoribilia that was issued only to the crew.I have ridden in cab of both steam engines, yes it's Awesome.
What a monster. My Grandfather operated a 4 6 0 for the CNR and is preserved and operates. THIS makes it look like a toy. GREAT video son>>>>>
Thanks dad!!
@@JawTooth 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The turn-table is cool.
Good friend of mine worked on the KCS for 47 years told me the Pittsburg, KS turntable was so balanced you could push it by hand without a locomotive on it! Even years after it’s last use when they went to remove it they pushed it by hand one last time! Took a few people to overcome rust that last time
Big Boy makes 3801 here in Australia look small in comparison . 3801 has just returned from a totally new boiler being fitted and is now in the trial process
Great videos keep them coming. Those branch line videos are interesting with the history commentary 👍👍👍
Thank you for watching!
The world is a better place with every steam loco that is returned to operating condition.
Very nice railroad video. thumbs up! LIKE 267
Wow great video jaw tooth man you went way up in Wyoming that is too cool keep up the good work and happy trails
👍🚂 Thanks for bring history being saved 👍🚂
Thank you!
Dayum B, I never have seen 4014, a 4-8-8-4 before?? WOW. Neat video of it.
I have several more videos of it on my steam train playlist. That is the Big Boy!
@@JawTooth I saw your "OUT WEST" videos B but maybe I just missed the wheel configuration since I was more impressed by the engine itself LOL. Gawd I miss Steam, I recall 1959 in Hamilton and riding to Chi Union Sta with my grandparents and then on to Rockford, ILL, Bring em back.
That was pretty awesome and that great piece history keep the great work jawtooth
At least they are saving the roundhouse, and turning it into a museum, or some other useful venue. The Milwaukee had a four or five stall roundhouse in Ottumwa, IA, that was back in 1987 the last time I saw it. Went back to that same place with in the last year and it was demolished.
Wow, great job Jaw tooth! What an amazing facility! That place is a gold mine for history buffs such as myself. Thanks for posting my friend. I have a good friend in Columbus, when I get out to visit him this summer I will send you a message, I would love to have a frosty adult beverage and talk about trains with you!
Thanks Jaw Tooth. I gotta say, what I like most about your videos is that they are informative as well as a pleasure to watch.
Very interesting • looks like a Lionel turntable 🚂
I am happy to see my favorite steam train
Thanks 4 watching!
Real nice one, JT! That was a real treat to see that little girl experiencing a turntable turning. She'll remember that for a long time. And UP2650, looking spotless, like it just came out of the showroom. Hardly ever will you see a clean UP engine. They run them and run them hard, and then keep running them. Cleaning them up to a shine isn't a priority with Union Pacific, lol
I have a few more UP videos to post from Utah. I filmed a train going by Thousand Mile Tree. I need to put those videos together
Very nice video. Thanks for posting and have a nice day too.
4014 is a BEAST
I have mixed feelings watching this. On one hand the work and investment that UP put into preservation of rail history is fantastic, the locomotives, the turntable and the roundhouse etc. On the other hand it is sad to see so many rails pulled up and how many of the links to the turn table now only run for a few feet. Wouldn't it be a dream to see all of the lines running into the roundhouse and a preserved locomotive parked in each of the bays? Nice video as usual Jaw Tooth.
This is straight up awesome.
There is a cool roundhouse turntable at the train museum in Sacramento...
Pretty cool video.thanks for sharing. LJL
Those locomotives are so big it would be hard to find a turntable in good enough condition and of the correct length to turn one on nowadays! :D Excellent video Jaw Tooth keep 'em coming! :D
I saw the Big Boy 4014 in Claremore Oklahoma on the UP Wagoner Subdivision at the Florence Avenue grade crossing. The data on that crossing is 428370P. That sub crosses the BNSF Cherokee Subdivision north of J.M Davis Boulevard at crossing number 434020L. It is near Route 66.
Love seeing turn tables in action! Thanks for sharing!
We have a fully operational turntable in Owosso Michigan. Used to turn the 1225 Pere Marquette locomotive 2-8-4 around. Also used by Great Lakes RR to rotate their rolling stock too. I guess there are times when even the diesels need turned around I guess!
I have been to Owosso and photographed that turntable. I was there some years back when they had a huge railfan event and we rode behind some steam locos there, probably the 1225 but I don't remember without looking at my pics. I do remember the turn table and the small engine building.
NICE 484 AND 4884
Awesome video jaw tooth turn table track Wyoming this past year ago keep up the good job friend bless you look forward see big boy Union Pacific stream train locomotive
That's pretty cool all our turntables and engine buildings have been torn down 😒
Thanks for watching!
@@JawTooth You should see the B&LE shops in Greenville PA it's sad to see the way the roundhouse & turntable is now it was built back in the 1800s. The CN bought the B&LE in 2004. I grew up across from there big yard witch looks like a ghost town now even though it's still in use in N bessemer Pa.
Oh Oh! Steam train alert! They are such a golden treat! So was the turntable! But I could not tell if that was a caboose at end of video, Looks like something else, Like a mini engine or something. Thanks for sharing!
Smitty SF-3751
Never been there, looks like there is a lot of work going on. They are really trying to save some of their history. Glad you got to ride the turn table, rode one in Carson City NV..
Great upload Brian. Left you a BIG LIKE my friend!
Have a great weekend....
Thomas
Thank you Thomas!
Nice video! Going inside the roundhouse reminded me of the museum at Steamtown in Scranton, PA.
Thank You jaw tooth. for filming this excellent video. I really enjoy watching it. Especially I like when you get big boy. In the 🎞️🎞️🎞️films but think u sir
Thank you Lamar!
Awesome video.
Thank you Celio!
Great to see Big Boy in steam
I chased it to Ogden and back
Is really under steam or just for the whistle?
Super Like!👍
Sir Brian !! THANKS !! Maybe 1 of these days will make the trip to ride # 844 & 4014 !!! Would be nice to take the full railfan trip !!! ""KEEP IT SAFE ""!!!!
Looks like a great place to visit. I haven't seen a working turntable in decades. Sounds like that one had a Genny on it. They're normally electric. I see the lines look to be still there.
What exactly are they building? It looks like all of the round house tracks are still in place. I hope that they are going to cleans those up and use them.
It was nice to hear the radio chatter when the big boy was backing in to that siding. Looks like a fantastic turn out to see the old girls. It's great that America remembers where it can from.
That is a big yard well done
Awesome video
👍👍🇮🇳
Awesome 👍 J.T. Thanks for sharing 😎👍👍👍🛤🚂
Thanks Jeff!
Now all we need is 4466 moving them around and we will be all good xD
Thanks, eddystone! Read about penn-baldwin works eddystone! Here in ocean county we had the seaside Baldwin hotel and as a footnote my dad worked on a conveyed turntable turned into swing-gate bridge for cars. He told me it was a turntable. Lots of silence in new Jersey:
Instalação ferroviária fantástica!
Abraço
Very cool
Cool video 👍
Thank you!
Also the person running the turntable has to cut power at the correct time for the turntable to stop at the right position. They use a gauge to drop between the rails to indicate it's lined up exactly and safe for a locomotive to embark and exit the turntable!.
That will get those DPU's turned around.
Great video, Brian! I'm not a fan of UP but I give them huge props on preserving steam history.
We got to see Big Boy as it passed through Eastern Colorado on in to Denver just before Thanksgiving. Got a video of our day with UP 4014 on my channel.
At the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, they have a manually operated turn table. I had the pleasure of actually pushing a narrow gauge steam locomotive around on that turntable last summer.
Keep 'em coming!
That is awesome! I have a friend who lives near Denver at Brighton. Its been a few years. I'll check out your video
Neat! ✔👍
I believe the wheel you zoomed in on is not touching the rail due to lack of load. If an engine was on the deck, I'm sure it would have touched.
Wow that is pretty cool awesome video jaw tooth steam engines are awesome
Like steam? Go to steam town and for a break take the walkway to the mall and go to the aquarium it’s worth it. There’s a big boy there too on static display
Impressive video and amazing the engines.
Live Action Junction!!
Very cool!
Mr.Jawtooth, It does a body good to see how it use to be done. I don't believe there are any turn tables in service today, maybe in large yards, but none in my area.
Is that turntable the same way they used to turn around the Batmobile in the Batcave? They had some pretty amazing technology back then. That thing has to hold hundreds of tons. Too bad it's a disappearing phase right now.
That little kid in the speeder was a cool sight ... kids love trains. We should all be kids when we watch trains .... wait ... what am I saying ... we ARE all kids when we watch trains ! I like your Ohio/Kentucky RR videos .. great scenery. What do you think about Wyoming and Utah .. God's backyard? Lot dryer heh? Pronghorns, prairie dogs and rattlesnakes ... I love it.
I love it out there. Almost anywhere is drier than Ohio. I also made it up to Idaho
wow that is interesting.
thanks for watching this old classic! My only time to be in Wyoming
You sure get around!
Awesome catch Brian! At 3:15 , how did she get your spot? I believe that is Ed Dicken's wife. Ed is the engineer and head of the steam program at Union Pacific! I'm sure she spent many years swooning over him. That just might be hard to compete with. Lol! Great video! Pushed the like button as always! Cheers, Danny
Cool, I have some great videos of Ed in the cab. I didn't recognize his wife
@@JawTooth Haha! Awesome man! It might not be her, but I would bet it is. I have seen other vids of her riding in the cab with him. That is so cool for them both. Nice catch of the whole operation my friend. Cheers, Danny
This Is The Littles Train Of All.
Thanks for watching!
You are the man!!! It's awfully nice of you to go all the way to Evanston to keep us in great videos. Did they let you bring one of those 44 tonners home?
That whistle on the Big Boy is the best sounding whistle ever - absolutely soul-stirring.
Keep 'em coming and thanks.
Thanks for watching Frank!
It should work the same as any other railroads turntable! You put the engine or car on the turntable, and you turn it! Same as all other railroads, whether armstrong or powered, it still works the same...it turns! Hence....TURNTABLE!!!
Put this one up there with one of your best 👍
That was awesome to watch, big like!
Thank you Justin!
Know this roundhouse very well. Lived there in 1970. If you pan slower you will get a much better picture and it will not be so blurey...
Awesome video!!!!
just as a FYI, the diesel is pushing the train into the yard- don't have to work the steam locomotives as much.
Looks like some of those tracks haven't been used in a long time
thats for sure
This is a great video. You should visit the NC Transportation Museum. It’s got the round house and turn table still in working order. They do train restoration work in the roundhouse and you can watch them work.
I have been there and I filmed inside that roundhouse. I know I posted videos from around the turntable there and the 611 but I don't remember if I posted the videos I shot inside the NC Transportation Museum roundhouse
Szép videó!😃👍👍👍
Thank you Ferenc!
oh I want that Speeder!
least one like it
Is that dude holding a beer on the right hand side of the turntable?
No, lol
I bet union nlabor put that round house together.
Like This Video Like to see more
Nice Jaw thxs ,whats up with the 3 center cabs locals ????
Part of the museum collection
That is so cool😎😎
Thank you Stanley!
Awesome!
Thanks for being the first person!
@@JawTooth thank you for all the great videos!
Can I assume the big concrete block on the turntable is to apply weight to the drive wheels for traction?
just heard today that 3985 will not be rebuilt/fixed up.
officially retired.
Awesome video! Do you know what the specs and capacities of this Railroad turntable? I.E. you mentioned length of 100 feet, but how much load can it carry? What mechanism is used to turn the turntable? Thanks in advance!
I'm just looking for my cat. Guess she's not here... cool turntable though.
I wonder if LIma loco works had one or two. Certnaly the qupie hamburger shop had one for autos. A pickle on top makes your heart go flipity flop. And we ate them on the way from LIma to north findlay ohio.
Union pacific should add a couple of their remaining smaller locomotives to the operational locomotive roster, the 9000 would be too big and costly due to it's 3rd cylinder and it being hard on track
i think the big boy is still the heaviest loco ever... anyone know how much HP she puts out???
I'm not a huge fan of UP, I do love the Big Boy.
They should 'ave, mes amis, gotten that T-table spinning like a top...like an amusement-park ride !...after a goodly bunch of fans mounted it. THAT would have been a sight. If only the corporate entity there had a sense of humour to match yours.
Lol, thanks for watching and commenting!
I Hope Challenger Runs Again
Hey Martin! Does the steel Turntable wheel roll on a Steel Rail ? It’s hard to see. Thanks! 👍
Yes, that is a rail that it rolls on. I tried to show it. At 4:43 you can see that it is an unflanged steel wheel rolling on a regular steel rail that is mounted on small wooden railroad ties. It is like a track with only one rail that goes in a circle. But, yes it is a track.
I believe the first industry we wrested from our colonial overlords made steel wheels for the Friends of charston.
Works like most turntables in the US😂
Are they going to fix up the place?
Do you know if they are going to be restoring the tracks into the turntable? I see that the roundhouse itself is being converted into retail spaces. Cool video footage. It's going into my saved videos for future reference on a turntable on the next version of the Shade Tree Railroad, Lord willing.
I don't know if they are. There was a lot of stuff to see there in a short time. Have a great weekend George!
@@JawTooth Thanks to Six Toes for answering my question and sending me a link to a great video, ruclips.net/video/RgFjrzQWIYk/видео.html
It's got to longer than 100', the big boy is 132'?
You would think's they'd keep the weeds down.
