- Bailey Yard is the world’s largest railroad yard and is owned by Union Pacific. After going through the visitors center I went up to the 8 story Golden Spike Tower. Sorry for the bad drone footage. The gimble malfunction and it was very windy. So I did manage to get some footage.
it's mind boggling how they keep track of which car gets to their final destination

@@MarkTheLostTraveler I rarely happens when an entire train goes down the wrong track. In the yard, trains are being put together (they are not trains at this point, just cars being sorted). Cars are sorted by a switching list each operator has. The Yardmaster controls the switches to each track and knows which car into each track - it's called classifying. In a Classification Yard, each yard track is a destination (city or region).
I know a woman who worked there, doing the logistics of the whole thing. It was pretty stressful and she didn’t last long.
Lots of computers are involved and I believe all cars have a type of barcode. I dont think everything is automated but MUCH is although humans are still involved in the various processes. [Nate the Yard superintendent gave a 2 tour a couple of years ago which I was able to attend. His office has numerous computers and video screens. [The tour is NOT available to the general public otherwise he wouldnt have any time remaining to actually do his job.] PS...Thanks Nate, it was a great tour.]
No different than a merchant shipping company like Evergreen or Marsk accurately tracking hundreds of millions of shipping containers and their contents at any time globally. Airport luggage tracking works pretty much the same way. Most of that computerized cargo manifest tracking tech was invented right here in the USA by Union Pacific and former Southern Pacific in the 1970s. Block Chain is the next frontier of logistics

Visited there this summer. I had seen videos of the place before on RUclips but in person it was bigger and busier than what I expected. My wife had no clue as to what to expect and was totally amazed at everything. Well worth the short detour off of I-80. Thanks for sharing.

My uncle was a comms engineer for B&O-->Chessie-->CSX........ saw the rail yards at Ashland, Kentucky and thought it couldn't possibly be outsized....... this is spectacular.
I loved the smell of trains in the early 60's, he'd take me from Baltimore to Youngstown and back...... in those days the B&O locomotives were that deep dark blue. The smell of diesel, who knows what other oils, the cooking....... wonderful memories. I have yet to get to the B&O Museum, only 40 minutes from here. Thanks for this excellence, LostTraveler.

Back in the day, I worked at the SP hump yard in Houston - Inglewood...or Englewood. One of our road crews had to work off some time agreed upon by the SP and the union. I thought it was huge, but this is really huge. On another note, the five hundred million dollar investment in the Brazos Yard located In Mumford, Texas where the old MoP and SP lines ran parallel, has now been put on hold after much work has already been done. About five or so miles from Mumford, the old Hearne yard, once a thriving place and a good provider of jobs by the SP, is now more or less a ghost town.
Now THAT'S what I call a big train set layout! Mine as a kid just wrapped around our Christmas tree a couple of times.....

No worries from my end Mark, I like this. I've always been a 'train' enthusiast. The clip of the young woman operating the SD40 and slug by remote control brought to mind something I heard as a younger man though in my case it was manning the bridge on ships … "Big boys (and girls) playing with the Big Toys."

i am an engineer for the union pacific railroad in north platte nebraska since 1998, things with the rail roads have changed alot in and around this yard. less people working, bigger and longer trains, unit sets that are junk, cant wait to retire, all my up stuff is going in the trash. lol

My great-grandfather is Victor von Goetz, an Austrian immigrant who settled in North Platte in the 1880s. Initially he worked for Union Pacific and later became the town's mayor.

10:19 there's still quite a few HLCX power still here! That's what I saw hen I visited in 2016 (but there were AC6000CWs instead of SD9043MACs)

Graffiti gives a car character though. But only the good looking stuff..
KCS uses radio controlled locomotives also, I actually work on that system as part of my IT and comms contract with KCS. It's like operating a drone with the little OLED screen and stuff.
The HCLX and GATX locos are leaser units and UP has a deal with those companies to service their locomotives since the home companies do not have a diesel shop. KCS here has the deal to service small railroads power since they have the facilities to do so.

We went to North Platte ~4 yrs. ago. It is about 300 miles W of Omaha on I-80. What can I say? Despite some of the bumpy ride, it was extremely well worth it!!! The people of North Platte were very friendly to us; both in our hotel and shopping opportunities!😊❗
The Golden Spike Tower is a must-see. The museum video and gift shop were beautiful. Outside the museum is the flag area and state monuments describing U.P.'s history with them. There are picnic areas; but please note the Museum goes to great lengths to keep the grounds pristine! (continued)

The place is enormous. At no single vantage point can a viewer appreciate even 20% of the facility.
The golden spike tower is the best place for an overall view. Unless you get a drone up in the air and take a look around. Thank you for watching.

I live over by the J. R. Davis Rail Yard, its the largest classification yard on the west coast (keyword there is coast), second largest classification yard west of the Mississippi. That informative video gave me a lot of insight into what goes on over at the J. R. Davis Rail Yard. That alone earned this a thumbs up.

@@MarkTheLostTraveler It certainly has some interesting, yet obscure history to it. Years ago an event took place known locally as the "Roseville Explosion" when 19 of 21 cars loaded with bombs bound for Mare Island exploded and then part 2 of the "Roseville Explosion" took place when the yard began expansion and rebuilding and discovered several live bombs buried in the ground.
Being a train buff I thought that place was pretty cool when I visited back in 2016!!

The HLCX and blue locos are leased power.
They look smaller than the usual UP loco, so they probably save money by leasing the few small ones they need.

We came through North Platte in August ‘18, and approached the Golden Spike from the south. That was our orientation when we went up in the tower the south was behind us. The trains going to the left, east by your reckoning we’re heading West. Same with your “West” bound trains that are actually heading east.
Thought I would point that out.
When Big Boy 4014 embarks on its system "Grand Tour", it's likely coming through Bailey on its way to Omaha, Iowa and Missouri.
I had to laugh when you said "and that is looking eastbound" @11:43 when you are looking westbound at the repair shop and the Eastbound Classification Yard. :)

My father actually worked there for a long while until me and my brother grew up and moved away. I got to head into the yard with my mother sometimes to bring him his lunch when he forgot it, the only thing is that I had to stay in the vehicle and not get out.
I have to say that it is very loud without earplugs, and they have to supply earplugs to workers for safety reasons (I still have some my father gave me to this day and they work better than store bought in my opinion). I sure do miss that town, and maybe I'll visit once again in the future just to go down memory lane and chat with some of my father's friends as well to see how they're doing.
A neat bit of information about the different colored helmets they wear there is that the people wearing the white helmets are usually managers, foremen, or supervisors. My father was one of those people.

Saigiri Izumi Stobe the Hobo. Check him out on YT. He was one of the first RUclipsrs to film his hobo adventures. He has many cool videos from Bailey yard but hiding on reasons not as a tourist.

Despite numerous reports to RUclips to close these "hobo" channels that advocate for engaging in illegal and highly dangerous activities, YT allows them to persist. But ohhhhh noooo, don't let anyone file a DCMA complaint on a broadcaster because they might have a snippet of a someone else's video that the creator wants to nitpick about, even if used as "creative commons". All the red locomotives are rentals. Also the remote control engines must be very handy since you can stay out of the train and and couple and see better

Hi! I was controlling that 317-417 switcher remote near the end of the video. (The 317 is the front (mother unit) -that 417 is what we call a slug and doesn’t start up/run)

I’m from North Platte it is truly impressive we have a A lot of interesting history here because of the Railyard there is one story of how the people of North Platte and the railyard teamed up to help during World War II keeping moral up

HLCX is a rail power leasing company. They lease out locomotives to any railroad that needs them. It stands for Helm Leasing Corporation. The 'X' means leased. GATX is the General Motors Transportation leasing for locomotives.

Just know this place is a ‘middle of no where’ type of town in 2021.
No theaters,
No real entertainment or anything to do other than the lake and the rivers to float and fish.

This video just popped up for me in my feed.... and I haven't been to the spike yet though we live 45 miles away, and we shop and go to church in North Platte.
My father in law retired from the UP about 22 years ago, and brother in law has been working there for nearly as long. We have a family ranch, and many area ranchers, even those who live in Mullen, NE another 35 miles to the North of here, work for the railroad as their second job which pays the bills on the ranch.
The Union Pacific has had so many layoffs in the past 2 years since this video was made, that it has really hurt the local communities... all so the BIG WIGS in the company can receive some huge pay increases, that it is beginning to tick off the local railroaders.
Did not know about Buffalo Bill Cody's head on collision... told my husband that we probably need to go see The Spike! (Had free passes from a friend who works there a year ago and didn't use them... rats!!)

The rail workers are not entitled to get sick. If they do, they need to pay for it. They are on the job almost 24/7 and can be called out anytime. Congress just took their right to strike from them. If you want the PEOPLE which RUN the railroad to have a decent life, support your RAILROAD UNION NOW!
The HLCX and GATX engine’s are leased engines. When business picks up and they don’t have enough UP engines they lease them. When business slows down they can be returned to the leasing company.
