    Holy cow! I moved from Chicago to Portland about 5 years ago. I was able get a couple of gorgeous period apartments in downtown Portland and I loved all the architectural features in them. Your apartment is gorgeous. The only sad thing in my opinion is that one of my favorite apartments still had a claw foot tub in the bathroom.
    I’m not living in them anymore because the landlords raised the rent substantially and other circumstances in my life have changed.
    I am now subscribed to you and can’t wait to see what you do with the place 😂❤👍

    The algorithm brought me here. The apartment has beautiful features. The open area in the living room with the three shelves and textured wall could be used for storage. It doesn't seem deep enough to put a bar across it for coats (maybe it is, it's hard to tell in the video), but you could put hooks and use the floor for winter boots, maybe sporting equipment, etc. I would cover it with some type of curtain or even install doors, if you plan to be there for some time. You could also put folding chairs there, in case you want to host a dinner party and need more seating. Good luck, may you be happy in your new apt.

    Get a little artificial fireplace stove, and fit it into your fireplace opening

    I'd put a small cute table in front of the old doors to put stuff on when you walk in. A reading chair by the window. Also use that ladder as a blanket holder next to your bed. Desk in that green nook for your computer/laptop.

I would not however put your TV above the fireplace, it just doesn't look good and it's too high for a TV-if you can find a lower stand or shelving unit that would be better I would put it to the right of the FP and your couch facing the FP and create a nice couch/chair table situation facing the FP-IMO-it's all beautiful though!!

    Beautiful place!
    I would suggest having your TV on a media console, placed in the empty space in the center of the room, leaving a decent space for the hallway. This will create a sense of order by dividing the living space from the entrance. It also means your couch wont be blocking any heat (from radiator or fireplace) to travel throughout the room. The size of your fireplace mantle means that the tv would be very high on the wall if you mounted it which will create some difficulty when sitting down to watch. Putting your tv beside the fireplace creates two focuses of the room and doesn’t look as good.

    I can just imagine what you are paying in rent. So many of those old beautiful homes around Munjoy Hill and the Eastern promenade have been converted into these types of apartments. It's functional, but at the same time sad. The homes should have been preserved as a part of history. Some of the history and the architecture is really something to be admired.

    • @margaretskiff
      @margaretskiff  Месяц назад +2

      I strongly disagree, we already have a housing shortage here in Portland so converting these giant old homes into smaller units is necessary

    • @MyRickynOlivia
      @MyRickynOlivia Месяц назад

      @margaretskiff nothing to agree or disagree with. I was born and raised in maine. I am 38 years old. I own a home in York County in the country. I have family my parents included who owned multiple apartment properties. They were plummers or electricians. I understand the need to convert them and why they did. Hence why I said functional but sad. They won't touch similar homes on the western end. A lot of those have been preserved. I just have a huge appreciation for architecture and the classic look and feel of old buildings. I've been to Castle in the Cloulds NH the Singer Mansion NY along with 2 Vanderbilt mansions NY/RI. I've done the Christmas Tour on the western end and been multiple times to the Longfellow house. Plus, just driving around Wells/Kennebunk lol. It would have been nice to see some of these converted homes before the reconstruction. They are truly beautiful works of art.
