I remember all this I lived in the north end in the 1970’s before we moved to Brookline
I grew up during the 1970s. I remember the windows falling out of the Handcock building. lol I remember everything being so much dirtier then. Urban renewal was a good thing.
Same here, except I kinda miss Dirty Boston.

@TechMasterJason LOL, you are just full of stats and data. Anyway, Jamaica Plains wasn’t great back in the 50s but, you don’t have much choice in where you are Born.
I haven’t been back to JP in 20 plus years but, I was in Boston a few years back. Still have friends in the area. Tewksbury, Lawrence, Woburn, Wilmington. Worcester.
I assume you were born in the Wakefield area. I know the area pretty well,my dad had a small business and brought us to the area back in the 60s and 70s. I believe there was a place near the railroad tracks called King cole donuts not sure it’s still there. I believe it was around North ave or street.

Thanks for sharing this. We just moved back to Kansas City after living in the Boston area for four years. As I'm watching the video, I'm thinking you could switch out the cars for today's cars and so much of the city looks exactly the same. GREAT video and music.

@@Dhardy316 Between the Kansas City metro and Boston metro? I’ve lived in Kansas City most of my life. Our four years in Massachusetts were awesome. Two very different places.
If I were choosing simply on the two places, I’d choose Boston. I’m a huge history buff, love the ocean, and love forests. Massachusetts wins those three hands down.
Even though Kansas City has made great strides in revamping its downtown, Boston has much more to offer.
One huge plus for Kansas City are cost of living. We built a house in Framingham substantially the same as the one we sold in Kansas. It costed three times as much and the property taxes were double.
Getting places is much easier in KC. You can tell exactly where you are anywhere in the metro by the address. The city’s on a grid. The street number tells you how far north, south, wast, or west you are. There’s very few duplicate street names. It seemed like every Massachusetts town has a School Street , a Church Street,etc. street numbers don’t give you any clue where you are in the metro.
One of the things we noticed going back and forth was the openness of the land. New England has so many charming, windy roads with threes nearby in both sides and often blocking the sky. Kansas is much more farm country and relatively few trees. That leaves the skies wide open. After six months in Boston that difference was palpable.
We live in an area that has some of the best school districts in the country, but there’s not a culture of learning the way there is in Massachusetts.
Despite the beauty of the fall and the fun of the occasional blizzard, I have to give KC the advantage on weather. Winter was just too long for me. The seasons are more balanced. Summers are longer and hotter. Six inches is a major snow storm.
The reason we moved back is family. W3 started having grandkids while were away. 1500 miles was too far away. Had it not been for that, we’d probably still be in Massachusetts.

I remember when all those windows in the John Hancock tower were broken & boarded up. It had something to do with the wind.
Correct. Because of the wind the whole building would twist causing the windows to pop out. A design nightmare.

Wow. Look how different Fanueill Hall looks, with the cars parked right up to the enterance. It's weird.
Even more weird is, you could see the old elevated expressway front and center when you looked toward the harbor down one of those streets.
Idk why I like it when that bicycle comes out and and rides along with the cars at 0:12. Also being able to see the John Hancock building under construction.
Trying to get a fix on the time frame. The pumpkins indicate fall, but the weather looks warm. Early October, '77-78 is my guess.
Hello...I was in high school at that time in Boston, and the John Hancock Tower was still under construction as I observed in the video, and also judging by the autos, this was 1971 or 1972. ;)
@@tybread I definitely wanna say 71/72 but the Chrysler New Yorker at 1:01 tells me 77 or 78, but I may be wrong.

I finally got to see what the old Quincy Market used to look like, with a clear view of the old elevated Central Artery no less. Thompson & Associates and The Rouse Companies made sure The Salty Dog fish market stayed put during and after it was renovated because I recognize the establishment!
We've nearly doubled in population since '75. It's evident without knowing the numbers.

Like the Jazz. Imagine eating a small lunch, sitting in a nice Jazz Bar or outside restaurant.

The cars and pedestrians looked to be communicating very nicely... Getting cars off the roads can bring these goods times back!
Realistically, that's never going to happen. The T isn't reliable enough (and also isn't open late enough) and the vast majority of others who work in or are visiting Boston don't have the option of biking. London tried a "congestion charge" but even that didn't have a significant impact on traffic. Keep in mind, also, that pedestrians back then were not like current lackadaisical idiots with headphones in or yabbering into their phone. They understood "right of way" doesn't mean "I'll just walk into this crosswalk and hope cars stop"

My guess is that this was '74 or '75. Quincy Market had yet to be transformed into Faniuel Hall Marketplace.
The Hancock Tower was still under construction. Around 1971 or 72. Quincy Market opened for retail and tourists in 1977.

Simpler times = Better times. Now they've beheaded the Columbus statue.
@TechMasterJason The statue was taken down because of George Floyd protesters demanding anything associated with/in reference to slavery/racism/genocide be torn down. It is believed that Christopher Columbus was an unabashed slave owner and murderer.
