    Rewatching this review 7 years after it helped me when buying my Mazda 3. Happy to say that in those 7 years, the only things that have failed on the car are the passenger side folding mirror motor and the drivers side window regulator, both of which I replaced myself. Still drives the same as day one, soul red still looks amazing and I've added android auto and a reversing camera to keep it up to date. The best car I've ever owned, by far. If you're still seeing comments on this video, thanks again Thomas! 😊

    Love this over the Civic. The Civic styling is just too overwrought and designed. The Mazda kodo style is very sleek and elegant

    • @omgitsme435
      @omgitsme435 7 лет назад

      Civic legacy is a great car, I am just not fan of their current design language. I believe the Honda products to be very practical and easy to live with. They also have the same issues as Mazda though I think. Their paint is very cheap/thin, NVH has always been a problem (CRV vibration issue), reliability is same I think, the drive is rather uninspired. But one cannot argue with their resale value and overall quality, new CRV winning much praise. The CRV vs CX5 debate is great to hear. The RAV4 is not even worth mentioning, it being an older generation and in need of an update.

      I'm in the market and I am close to buying an energy green civic coupe (I love oddball colors). Or I could wait to see the 2019 Mazda 3. Not sure if I can wait. But for 2018 none of the colors are oddball enough for me.

    I have M3 2016 with same engine, 2.0 G120 88kw, MT. Now its been one year with my Mazda, almost 20000 km, I am very satisfied so far. Long term consumption is 6.5 liters, in the city is usually 7, depends on the traffic of course.
    Its not really like with turbo, so to accelerate more quickly you have to shift down as Thomas properly described.
    Otherwise very comfortable ride, makes me calm always. Very good seats, the front at least, also nice for longer trips.
    Interior I like also very much, nice quality, almost premium look.
    Also intertainment system I have to mention, its simple, not many options, but its quick/responsive and very useful that you have dedicated controller to control it, because I woudnt like to have just touch screen - always dirty.
    I am satisfied with exhaust sound too.
    I am always looking forward to drive my Mazda again. :)

    Bought the 2018 model this week. Obviously it is a quite big improvement over my 2005 VW Golf.
    Driving feels like in a limousine. It you intend to buy or lease a new car by now, go for the "old" model, they are giving huge discounts, to get rid of the old stuff.
    BTW, I prefer the 2018 model over the new 2019 model. It looks more grown up.

    Really like the design in this car! And it's my impression that maybe not being excelent at any level, it's a very good, well balanced one in every aspect. Really liked your tip in the end asking for costumer experience replys. I think it's very important to have such information to have a perspective on the general owning experience, how the car turns out in the long run and an informed opinion on dependability/reliability. Keep up the good work!

      Funny you mention that, I took delivery of a red one in March and rejected it as the dealer scratched up the bonnet when it was being prepped. I wouldn't be surprised if it was sprayed and put into a showroom. Maybe that's what happened the one you saw also.

    • @djoetma
      @djoetma 7 лет назад +1

      When I was in college, we had a trip to the Rotterdam harbor, and got to see how the process goes when cars arrive. It happens that cars get damaged during transport and they get fixed and are still delivered. And the repairs certainly aren't always as perfect as you'd expect as a buyer of a new car. So indeed there's a need to check everything and maybe compare with a similar car if possible.

    • @johnjames01

    Great looking car but then again, Mazda has always made good looking cars with contemporary styling. Would be nice to see an evolution groupshot of the Mazda 323's and Mazda 3's side by side like in the Honda Civic review :)
    My dad had 1983 Mazda 323 5-door Hatchback in wine red back in the 80's so this 5-door Hatchback Mazda 3 in met. red sort of remindes me from that car. I myself had two 323's, my first car was 1982 323 3-door Hatchback in met. green and second car was 1990 Mazda 323 sedan in light blue metallic. Later I have had other brands, currently driving 2016 Kia Rio but still Mazda has special place in my mind. Maybe in the future I'll have another Mazda again :)

    I bought one in meteor gray SGT but sedan since a year a go and built in Japan. I use it for the day by day to my job and no issues to report by now only compliments. The rear visibility is a little bit short but nothing you can't handle. In highway only made me smile, a week a go I kick a 2018 VW ass in straight line (220km/h) in medium revs, 5th gear and my car want more. In curves are so easy to handle cuse' the G Vectoring control and is more easy to leave behind another cars of the same segment. It was a very satisfactory purchase.

    Very informative video. I liked it very much. What I find only very unfortunate is that in none of the videos you can find on RUclips about the Mazda 3 2017/2018, the sports package / sports package + is mentioned. This there is namely also, as I own a Mazda 3 in the Sports Line equipment with Sport Package+.
    Here you then have a spoiler lip, rear diffuser, side skirts, sports suspension, sports exhaust and a rear spoiler. These are all not aftermarket parts, but there was the Mazda 3 Sports-Line to buy from Mazda with the sports package +.

  • @randyrandier2664
    @randyrandier2664 7 лет назад +7

    Very good review! I don't want to discredit the Mazda but a few things I'd came across when looking at this car in the showroom recently:
    1. The headlining, when I pressed on this with my fingers, there was a lot of movement (2cm+). It almost feels as if it needs extra clips / glue to hold the headlining in place.
    2. The standard fabric used for the seats feel really thin and cheap. The leather option, supposed to be a luxurious option, feels very plastic-like.
    3. The plastic window switches feel really thin and cheap to touch, almost like they were made from the same type of plastic found in disposable food packaging.
    4. No power socket/usb charging at the back of the center console for the rear passengers.
    Part of the Mazda philosophy is weigh saving with their current range of cars to improve economy but there are areas where using lighter materials just gives the car an overall feeling of cheapness and low quality. I hope they improve on these areas and more with the next generation model.

    Great review, very informative.
    Back in the summer a purchased a 2018 3 165 Sport Nav in the Eternal blue mica, I also bought the sport black body kit with it, it’s a fantastic all round car and I absolutely love it.
    It’s ride is on the firm side but it is comfy , it’s nice and refined and there’s a big boot and plenty of interior space for the family, its very well equipped, the engine is great of fuel and the interior (stone leather) is holding up perfectly with the family esp the kids 😂
    The car is also an amazing and sporty car to drive. It’s Feels like a hot hatch given how sharp the controls are and how you can chuck the car around corners and hang the engine out up the revs range (the engine loves to rev being a big naturally aspirated engine).
    Would recommend to anyone looking for a family hatchback to try the 3 especially in facelift trim as the small changes make a big difference (esp the refinement).

    Very detailed review. You are easily my favourite car reviewer on youtube. Looks like there are not too many changes from the 2017 model. I just bought one of the last Mazda 3 GT 2017's at my local dealership, and after 2 weeks we love the car. It was a demo (with 100 KM) and it came loaded with the electric package. Did not want this originally, but after using all of these goodies we are pleased to have it. If I had to think of any complaints it would be that the left foot resting plate is carpet so will get dirty and wet in the winter. Also, the Bose sound system sounds good, but you need to turn the dial up pretty far to get it somewhat loud. I was expecting something a bit more powerful. Just minor things. Overall I could not be any happier with the quality for the price. Oh one more thing.... the leather seats are comfortable, but the quality of the leather is not up to par with some of the other cars I've owned in the past.....such as the Acura TL.

    Hello from the north country: Canada! I discovered your channel because it came up in my search on RUclips. I think your review is the best I've seen on the Mazda 2017/2018. I am very much interested in acquiring the Mazda 3 GT with the 2.5 and automatic transmission. Generally, this car gets very good reviews. I intend to get this car made in Japan ant NOT in Mexico because I am aware of mediocre quality control issues in Mexico ( Volkswagen cars made/assembled in that country were mediocre). I would like to hear about assembly fit and finish about the car from other users here -- especially about resistance to rust/corrosion. I really like the GT version. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

    as for the 2D/3D logo issue - older Volvo models had their radar hidden in the front grille to the side from logo, so the logo always remained 3D like. So if the car makers wanted, they still could do it like that, but it is probably cheaper/easier for them to put everything in the center behind the logo. And I am sure that they don't actually care because most of the buyers doesnt notice that 😉

    Excellent review Thomas, as always. I own a current model Mazda3 SP25GT Hatch automatic (Australian model), purchased back in August 2016. I'd disagree with you somewhat about the 'sporty' nature of the car, although that maybe has much to do with the 2.5 litre petrol engine. And maybe the suspension settings are different here. My previous cars were a BMW 125i Coupe M Sport and a Mazda RX-8, so I know a bit about 'sporty' handling. I think the 2.5 engine addresses most of the criticisms you make. I've driven a 2.0 litre here and it is fairly gutless in comparison, especially at low revs. Such a pity Europe doesn't get the option of a 2.5 petrol engine. It doesn't make the car a hot hatch but definitely a very warm one.

      Hi mate, I also own current model SP25GT in Melbourne.
      What sort of fuel economy are you getting? I honestly think the fuel economy can be better considering it has stop/start feature and the car is not exactly heavy....
      I am getting 10-10.5/100 car has done 9000 kms now. Fuel economy was worse when new.
      I test drove my mate's CX-5 2 litre version and I am getting 8/100... this is ridiculous eh? the CX5 is heavier, 4wd yet I am getting better mileage.. is it just my car or what ?? :(
      Wife's old IS250 2009 model is getting 10/100... it's a 2.5 liter V6 without stop/start and a much heavier sedan (a lot quieter).....

      Daniel Laurence G'day Daniel, I'm also averaging 10-10.5 l/100km and I'm just coming up to the 10,000km service. 95% of my driving is urban (Sydney suburbs) and usually fairly short trips so I'm reasonably happy with that. On a longish trip (M1 Motorway to Newcastle and back), I averaged 5.9 l/100 km. That was using cruise control most of the way set on 115 km/h (to keep Mr Plod at bay). For comparison, my previous RX-8 used to average 18 l/100 km of 95 RON around town. My BMW 125i (3.0 litre six) used to average around 15 (also 95 RON) for same driving, so I'm actually pretty happy. Hope that helps. I should have mentioned that I don't drive for economy, if you know what I mean.

    Great review with lots of details. Although I don't really understand why you didn't test the 165 hp version instead, like most do. I considered a Golf 7 at first, but after I've compared what it offers at that price, the Mazda is much cheaper. The design is simpler and more elegant (that is, of course, a matter of taste). But the 165 hp is probably the most rewarding compared to other cars in the same price range. We're picking ours up tomorrow, can't wait to drive it properly and enjoy it for a longer time.

    Guys please be careful if you buy the manual Mazda SP25 Astina, I got a brand new one last year and I was not happy with the transmission. Changing gears NOT smooth as a new car should be. To make matters worse, on the 3rd gear, the shifter vibrates heavily when I accelerate and you can hear the vibration which ruins the whole driving experience. Mazda confirms this is normal. I have complained to ACCC and Victoria Consumer Affairs. They gave me instructions on how to deal with Mazda from now and will support me in forcing Mazda to fix the issue.

    I own the 2.0 petrol 165ps and it has proved to be a reliable & well equipped car. It lacks low down torque but is ok when revved hard and i find the on the limit handling to be quite entertaining with a hint of lift off oversteer? The biggest drawback for this car i think are the wafer thin panels that will dent in a strong breeze and the even thinner paint? Compare the paint thickness to an equivalently priced BMW for example and its a bit shocking and i would gladly have paid extra to have a couple of kilos more paint applied to my car?

    The design is very good. I like the color though I do not like red. This car just need some body restyling a bit of change of design, different set of rims and some different rims as options with chrome, dark chrome and gold chrome, much sportier front and rear bumper and side skirt, a spoiler and under bumper chin spoiler as optional aerodynamics, more color options and decals, luxurious but sports style interior, 9 inch LED touch screen, Kenwood stereo and the most important thing. 390 HP Super Charge engine 4.5 sec 0-60 and 12.7 quarter mile time AND A NURBURGRING TIME OF 7:10 - 7:20. This hatchback should only weight 2,100 - 2,500 lbs.

    • @sevecc
      @sevecc 7 лет назад

      if you have the 120HP version, you can easily make it aroud 170- 180 HP by ECU mapping :)

    • @raulm.1556
      @raulm.1556 7 лет назад

      True, but i loose my warranty if i do that. Thats the downside...

    • @sevecc
      @sevecc 7 лет назад

      yes, but normally when you to a service they don't check the ECU software so small chance someone would find the modification. On the other hand, you can always upload the oroiginal software before the service and change it again after. I know it wouldn't be very comfortable but I think it is worth it.

    • @raulm.1556
      @raulm.1556 7 лет назад

      Thanks for the recommendations, you have a valid point of view.
      If the car wasn't brand new i would probably do it, BUT, in addition to the warranty thing, come also some legal problems:
      -The car would have to be registered again because it has more Horsepower, different CO2 emissions, different yearly tax, etc. - not doing so you are actually cheating the State.
      -If anything happens, for example an accident, my Full Kasko insurance wouldn't pay anything because my car is listed with 120PS.
      Registering the car / modifying my insurance after an ECU Mapping , will automatically update my cars info in the Mazda database, therefore loosing my warranty.
      For me personally the 120PS i have at the moment is not bad at all, but just like 70% of the drivers around the world, what you have is not enough and you always want a bit more :)

    • @sevecc
      @sevecc 7 лет назад

      I don't understand why you need to register the car again for more horsepower ? The producer declares 120 PS and the reality is that if you go and dyno test it, all Mazdas 3 in fact have more PS - aroud 134 - 140 PS. It has been proven in many tests (I can link results if you want). So, knowing this, should you already go and register for 134 - 140 PS ? :)
      Of course from legal point of view, it is not right doing such modification, but hey! I am not saying that anybody has to, I am just saying that there is such possibility to unlock your natural engine power at very low cost :)

    Gorgeous looking car, I particularly like the sedan for the added elegance of its body design and I have no doubt it drives superbly. Just one thing though: that dash looks like it belongs on a car from 1995! Way dated in terms of design, especially the standard model which doesn't have the white leather upholstery to catch your eye.

    Great review Thomas. Which car has the edge for general driving and ease of use, the Mazda 3, VW Golf or Ford Focus?

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  7 лет назад +5

      For the risk of someone trolling "German bias" again: To me, there is no match to the Golf in the compact segment. Yes, it is somewhat boring, but it is just a great car. And no, my personal favourite brand is not German (I know you know, but others dont =)
      Still, Mazda3 and Focus are also good cars so there is nothing wrong with them at all. Mazda is good for their N/A engines for example

    • @gordonbennett6057
      @gordonbennett6057 7 лет назад +3

      At any segment really, I think if you're into cars, detail and ACC, and don't want to spend silly Audi Merc BMS Volvo prices, the Golf is difficult to ignore. It maybe pricey, and some say somewhat 'boring', but it's just a great car. Drive a standard Golf Estate SE 110ps TDI 7-spd DSG for a few days and you'll realise how quiet, refined and comfy it is. Add in a few traffic jams and bumpy roads. And you'll finally get it: satisfying to drive, relaxing, and you won't have had to put fuel in it. If you're the majority and not keen on cars, buy Japanese or Korean - any one or any thing - they're all good too, you won't be too disappointed, and the car won't break down very often. (I don't drive a Golf!). Cheers.

    Superb car the Mazda3. I own one of the last of the previous generation (2013) 1.6 petrol. Based on my experience I would not hesitate to recommend the Mazda3. It has been 100% reliable, not surprising though since this generation was a German TUV survey winner. It is comfortable with good seats, practical, and very easy to use. It also looks great especially in white, but its trump card is the driving experience which is nothing short of entertaining especially on twisty roads. Only real negative I can think of is road noise could be a little better suppressed. I would certainly buy another Mazda3 - and very likely will do.

      Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition - it is supposed to combine the benefits of diesels with petrol engines. The fuel ignites by compression, but petrol is used. They said in january, that this will be their new engine in Mazda 3 in the second part of 2018.

    Great review!
    I own exactly the same model and trim (just without leather seats). I have been driving it since December and I really the car. Agree with most of your comments. Would add that the LED adaptive headlights do a fantastic job! I definitely reccomend them!
    I think it is also worth mentioning that 2.0l 120HP engines, in fact they have around 140hp if you dyno test them :)
    What is interesting is that the 165HP engine is exactly the same as the weaker 2.0 - which is simply electronically blocked. You can easily modify the ECU software and get around 180 HP from that engine, at low cost.
    By the way, there are few little things that could be improved like:
    - boot practicality: maybe it is not that small but there is not even 1 hook for shopping bags or 12V output.
    - on the back seat it is very poor: you will not find air vents or 12V output or USB ports.
    - rear view camera - gets dirty very quickly!
    - last complain would be the MZD Connect - lack of Apple Car Play (sic!) and sometimes it is very very laggy.
    Cheers!

    A very pretty car. It was top of my purchase list. Then I found Kia, Their Forte5 is a better option here in Canada, for me. So far, happy although the dual clutch tranny needs getting used to. Most of the cars I checked out in my research were of the main brands. Excluding Ford and GM. Never owned Kia before and they are impressive. Reminds me of Honda in 1970's, with how quickly they are becoming popular and for good reason. The Forte5 has all of the design features I looked for. My only gripe about cars is buying the higher trimmed cars, always means leather or, animal skin. I would always take cloth if offered. But ...?

    Well, I own a 2016 Mazda3 in the Grand Touring model, I am hitting 30K km in the next few days, I am so used to the 2.5 liter I don't think I could get used to the 2.0, although I know it is a great engine for the class (In Mexico turbos are not the norm yet). If I have brand new oil and no people in the car I am sure I can make the 0-100 in about 7 seconds, which, for the car and class is pretty darn good. At least for me it is a fast car when overtaking... more than satisfied I'd say, can't wait for the next gen with the HCCI engines which should give more power, more torque and better fuel economy!

    I just took a test drive at the local dealer and I can tell you it's pretty much like driving my current Hyundai Elantra. I just found a few things I didn't like about Mazda. Switching from Trip A to Trip B and back to total miles is controlled by a cheap looking skinny plastic knob, almost a size of a toothpick. Has any Mazda owner broke it yet?
    Also, all those buttons in horizontal position placed next to a coffee cup, that's just a diseaster waiting ahead. How the hell do you clean it? Any feedback on that from Mazda owners? I have a chance to get 2018 Mazda GT hatch with 3000 miles, for $17 000 OTD, is this a good deal?
