    I lived on Leech Lake Mn. 30 yrs ago. I had an opportunity to guide Larry Dahlberg to big crappies for an article on spring fish. At one point he got out his fly rod, and I had never seen anyone cast like he was able to. It was a fishing memory I have cherished all these years. Now I live in Oregon where fly fishing is very much a tool for many species. I think of times where it may have been better than the methods we used back then.. Say hey to Al and Ron from Doug from Zion Harbor.

    Yeah, bluegills on those popper flies is a great way to have fun fishing during the bass spawn if the bass have lockjaw.

    just watched this on TV last week.I've been watching for about 6 months now and this is my favorite episode so far. in fisherman has had a lot of good stuff on these practices for the last year or so. let the big bulls go, keep the medium and smaller ones especially the sneakers and keep some of the big females if you want. The weather's been to Wacky here in Ohio( unless your Steelhead /trout fishing, which I should do more of) to fish for me for about the last 3 weeks, but looking forward to getting back out on the Open Water for panfish, mainly bluegill. I love this show!

    Glad to see you're still going strong. Your show (and magazine) have always been an inspiration to me from the beginning. Yup, I'm an old guy now. Those underwater clips from over 40 years ago are what got me into underwater video as well....and doing it ever since. God bless you with good health and many more years on the water! Rick

    I enjoy watching these videos where anglers respect the fish and the environment in and around the lakes and rivers. I love fishing, but I'm not about to treat the fish and waters like some people I see in RUclips videos. Great video.

    I think Izaak Walton would be proud of your work for this video. I want to thank you all for doing this for us that are learning. And, I hope to get on the water again, for fishing (and thinking). I hope you all stay smart and healthy as you are, and get fish you are after. And I hope too to find out more from you all about something I do love to do when I can..

    In CT, big bluegills and ones that are aggressive for their size are found mostly in private residential lakes. Small hidden ponds, along with old quarries and golf courses, are also great places. I used to fish a private lake and would easily catch plenty of 8"+ bullgills on small crankbaits, such as a Rapala JSR-4. I love how those big bullgills fight for their size on 6 pound mono and a 5'6" ML spinning rod.

    Usually if bluegill are stunted it's because there's too many of them in the lake. I remember the DNR recommending you throw small ones on the bank instead of releasing them to reduce their numbers and increase their size.

  • @Tubetopfan1
    @Tubetopfan1 7 лет назад

    Every spring I break out the fly rod and popper (or spider) for bedding bluegill and sunnies. They may not be as large as (many) bass but what they lack in size, they make up for in great bites and spirited fight.

    dont mean to be critical of you because i would do the same thing if i could afford a fish finder like that. try doing a video to find fish without all the technical stuff. that would be interesting. the way i find bluegill is i throw a redworm under a float. if i dont get a bite i know they are not there, bluegill will eat that before anything. then i can do the topwater just for fun. thanks guys

    I wish Indiana would implement more regulations on panfish. As it stands there's no size or catch limit on gills. Red ear and Crappie both have no size limit and 25 catch limit. My area has a large population of people from South of the border, and unfortunately they keep EVERYTHING they catch, no matter size or species, I've seen it on many occasion, fingerling bass? Toss it in the bucket, it's that bad. Several of my favorite fishing spots as a kid has had the fish population completely destroyed due to lack of regulations.

      Asians do the same thing... keep every fish they catch. If there are tame ducks or geese around a lake, the Asians will feed bread to the ducks & geese and when they get close to eat, the Asians will hit the duck or geese in the head with a baseball bat and take it home to eat also. I have seen numerous lakes & ponds completely ruined by Foreigners. I also have never seen a Game Warden ask a Foreigner or a Black to see his or her fishing license... because most of them never buy one. To ask them to show their fishing license would be racist... so the Game Warden's simply ignore them and only ask to see the license of White people.

    I caught a 12 1/2 inch at end of july and thought it was huge for a blue gill the weird thing i noticed was the body was round but the tail to the fin looked strange it was like 2 to 3 inches were it was skinny just strange must be the big ones have that strange tail.

    100% bluegill addict here. Anybody want to make a trophy bull gill road tip hit me up! Back in the day we used to think we had to keep a lot of big blue gill to make them grow. Boy were we wrong. I wish Oklahoma would start putting creel limits on these trophies. Caught and released my all time personal best last weekend. 11 5/8” GIANT! Getting a repro. #keepitfunkeeeeee

    when i was ten growing up on the farm. catching what dad called purple brem was so fun on poppers and mepps squirl tail spinners.
    most were huge, like 2 plus inches across the back. our brim were so big my dad could only eat a couple whole ones.
    the bass were always huge, 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 lbs. rarely in 2 and 3 lb range.
    it was a 150 yr old deep and heavily cold spring feed lake until the TWRA CAME AND POISONED OUR LAKE TO PREVENT ANY SPILL OVER INTO THERE NEW HYBRID STOCKED STATE LAKE.
    THEY STERELIZED EVETBODYS LAKE AND PONDS AROUND FOR 20 MILES.
    TODAY THERE ALL DEAD WATERS NO GOOD FISHING NO INDIGENOUS SPECIES LEFT AND NOT A SNAKE OR BULL FROG TO BE SEEN OR ENJOYED ANY MORE.
    IF YOU WANT TO GO FISHING NOW WITH ANY HOPE OF CATCHING FISH.
    YOU HAVE TO GO PAY TO FISH IN THERE BIG GMO POISON LAKE.
    I HATE THIS COMMISON WITH ALL MY HEART AND SOUL AND I WISH EVERYONE EMPLOYED TO THIS AGENCY WILL DIE A HORRIBLE AND PAINFULL AGONIZING DEATH.
    THEY HAVE STOLEN ALL OUR NATURAL TREASURES FROM US.
    I HOPE STHE STATE BOYS BURN TO HELL IN THERE BEDS.

    Speaking on the popper fly approach. yes you will slay bluegill. but you can also get into crappie on the right water. so many fly fisherman i talk to swear that you cant get crappie on poppers unless its early spring or in the fall. i catch them on poppers in the middle of summer where i live (northern nevada) we see 100 degree plus days starting in may. as a matter of fact the hottest parts of the day have shown me big crappie on top. even fish that hold deep around cover (say 3 to 4 feet) will rise to a propperly presented popper. nothing like seeing those white mouths grab a popper out of nowhere. sry kindof a side note but i thought it was worth putting out there. back to gills on the fly....foam spiders. get allot of them in allot of colors.

    a 7-foot rod for a bluegill is a little Overkill I don't care if it's Altra light I would go with a four-foot ultralight that is way more fun

    • @chrisgarone349
      @chrisgarone349 7 лет назад +1

      I agree, i dont really use anything but UL 4'-6'' rods for Panfish and smaller bass. Even for LMB i use 6'-6'' L-M rods. Only thing i use a big rod for is the Lake Ontario Salmon, which i use 9 to 10' MH rod or my 9wt 10' Fly rod

    • @chriswardenoftheforest1458
      @chriswardenoftheforest1458 7 лет назад +2

      Elvisr29 You could not be more wrong. The only reason you use a 4-5' UL is because of vegetation limitations (trees and overgrowth) around the creek or riverbank. Short rods allow you access to tight waters. A longer rod of 6-8' will increase sensitivity, hook sets, and casting distance. Your idea of using a stumpy rod just because your catching little fish makes no sense. I understand purchasing a 7' UL is not cheap or easily found but don't use your empty wallet as the reason you prefer a stumpy rod on an open lake.
