The video I was waiting for 👌🏼 ... I was not sure whether to pull the trigger on the new instinct 2 series or this 255. One thing to mention : this watch can easily be worn on an everyday basis, even with a suit, at work ! The instinct is too rugged and the fenix, just sold my 6 Pro sapphire, is too fragile with its scratch magnet stainless steel bezel !
Thanks for your review Matt ,im a running watch Addict 😅 i have the forerunner 745 and i sold my Polar grit x pro today and pull the trigger to the 255 non music.i think im better with the 255 than the grit x pro,it was a bad choice when i bougth him. Its a very capable watch but its not near Garmin in so many ways.
Ok, I think you're really going to like this 255 and to be honest, I never really use the music feature on these watches so I think that was a good call. Let me know what you think when you get it home and use it a bit. 👌🏻
Hi! Thanks for this review. It's great. Now that you asked I personnaly would love to see a comparison between the 945 and 255. Like features, sport profiles, overall feeling etc.
Perfect I just ordered the FR945 F6s pro and instinct 2 to try on as the first two are on a good sale - if the 255 is comparable to the 945 I might have to try that also :/
Hugely informative. Would be great to see a side by side comparison beside its predecessor the 245 as many will have that already and are considering the 255. I guess the regular watch is the natural choice and the S is suited for those with smaller, wrists?
Exactly. The S is a good option for smaller wrists but my wife and I have very small wrists and think the bigger one looks fine. And I prefer the bigger screen and that little extra boost in battery life of the large version. I actually don't have the 245 to compare it to so I probably won't be making that comparison unfortunately but thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
It's something that I was really hoping they'd add and I'm so glad they added it. Here's my review of this watch after 6 months: ruclips.net/video/H-lDmNcKZtI/видео.html
I get a solid 6-7 days (having all functions on, except watch notifications/texts and I make sure I turn off bluetooth) I run and MTB alot and it's pretty good for the amount of GPS usage
Good review and exciting to see this from Garmin. Yes very interested in seeing an in-depth look at the 255 as a strictly triathlon watch. My question would be - buy the 945LTE as price dips or the 255 as my only tri watch? As of your last review I was 945LTE bound.
@@Primetime_dads - Keep in mind the 255 has a slightly larger screen which I think you might like. I it's a pretty compelling option. I'll try to make a 955 vs 255 video in the next few weeks.
I don’t have a magic ball, but I foresee the FR255 being a HUGE problem for Garmin’s competitors. This price point could put smaller companies out of business. This means companies like Suunto and Polar will have to make devices that are cheaper or considerably better than Garmin’s mid tier watch. I could be wrong, but I don’t see either of those things happening.
100% agree. I will say there's a lot of loyal Polar user or people the are passionate against Garmin and would only consider Coros or XYZ company. But I agree that this watch. is really impressive for the price. Thanks Tyrese!
Any reviews on the Fenix 7X sapphire solar coming out? Want to see a comparison between it and the 955. Most definitely will use your link to purchase either one!
That’s a hard one. I’d say it depends on if you need the maps that the Fenix 6 would provide. I don’t typically need maps and I like the morning report so I might go with the 255 but I’m guessing most people would pick the Fenix. I’d also take looks into account. Some people might prefer the looks of the Fenix. 🤷🏻♂️ Also keep in mind that the 255 only has 4 gigs of storage which isn’t huge if you’re think about getting the music version. I have a “255 after 6 months” video coming up soon but I don’t think there’s anything in this video that’ll change your mind between these two. Keep me posted on what you pick and how you end up liking it. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand thankd!! Yes i know 😢 but I think im leaning for the Fenix 6s pro because i really think it may have more to ofer . I do trail running so the climb pro its a peace of mind to have, i also love that it doesn't scram "sport watch" anywhere or at least at first glance..i would love to try that morning reports, race predictor and training more efficient also the v4 sensor. Thankd for the response and maybe after that 6, month I'll change my mind 😂
Hey Matt, great review! Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts. I would like your opinions about a possible comparison between the Polar Pace Pro and the Garmin 255, both new releases from Polar and Garmin. I am a runner on the edge of upgrading my "ancient" Polar, but I have these fantastic choices right now, and it's been tough to pick one. Any sharing thoughts would be of great value to me! Thank you again!
I was thinking about doing a video comparing these two products. I think I'd recommend the Garmin 255. It's a pretty compelling option unless you really enjoy the Polar ecosystem. Polar's Flow app is good and you might miss some of those features. Hope this helps and I'm happy to go into more details if you have any questions. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
It probably depends on how good of a job the user does providing good data. I’m doing a horrible job. I just had achilles surgery so I’m making my wife run with all of these watches. 😬
the report looks nice for a budget friendly with HRV is nice OWS shoot out i think it be awesome!! do you have any OWS that have a cable below like at mirror lake in ny state?
I don’t. I’m trying to figure out the best plan to track which ones are most accurate. It might not be the most scientific but I think I can rank them. Thanks buddy.
Great review as always Matt! Any reason one would get Swim 2 instead of this watch for pool and OW swimming as a primary workout? Other than price of course (difference is surprisingly not that significant between the two).
It's a hard call. I don't think the extra features are *needed*. The 255 is a very capable triathlon watch. If you want to save money, it's the way to go. The 955 is clearly a nicer watch so I think it's really tricky. My wife loves her touch screen watch but I tend to use buttons. I think it really depends on how you'd use it and your budget.
@@mlegrand went with the 955, figure I may one day regret not having the maps and hopefully, 🤞, with the training ready feature I can replace my Whoop and lose the insane subscription fee from that. Thanks so much for your feedback and initial review 👍👍👊
I’ve been testing the Apple Watch Series 7 for a long time and it’s really good. The new beta software has running power and a nicer triathlon mode. Personally, I think the 255 is a lot better for swimming, biking and running. Generally, any serious training. Where as the Apple Watch is a better ‘smart watch’. So it just depends on your priorities. 👌
Other videos might be showing the touch screen solar option. I'm not seeing any clear screen differences. I might try to make a 255 vs 955 video comparing them directly. I'll be sure to put the screen brightness directly next to each other in a shot. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
I have very small wrists and I still the bigger size is the right choice. The 255 has a 1.3 inch screen where as the 255S is a 1.1 inch screen. Thanks so much for checking out the channel. I really appreciate it. Let me know if there's ever anything you'd like me to cover here. 👍
Thanks for a great review! Thinking of getting the grey non music one. What size one we’re you wearing? I currently use an Apple Watch and then battery life is a real pain
Yeah, I agree. I have the Apple Watch also and I can’t stand having to charge it all the time. This is the 46mm version. I think that’s what you’d want. 👌 Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Hi Matt, I’ve been using the 255 for a few days now (slate grey) and I’m absolutely loving it and all the extra features and programmes that the Apple Watch can’t compete with.. also battery is a game changer. Only thing I’ve noticed the screen isn’t as vibrant as I was expecting and seen in reviews. Maybe I’ve been spoilt with the Apple Watch high res. However it’s probably a lower res and contrast to reduce using too much on the battery maybe!?!? It’s only a small thing.. thanks again 👍👍
Great review, thx! How does the size of the 255 square up to the 245 on wrist...not in Display size numbers more like how they wear in comparison...lug to lug wise. I picked up the the 255s as an upgrade to my beloved 245 but I find in considerably smaller with relatively thick black bezel around the display. The 245 has a perfect size for my small wrist. Thinking of getting the 255 and sending back the 255s. Thx in advance!
I have very small wrists and like the 255. The 255S has a smaller display which might be a bit annoying. I don't actually have the 245 to compare directly so I can't help you with that but I'm guessing this 255 is a touch larger. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Auto select will switch between modes based on the GPS conditions and strength of the signal. So that would depend on where you run. Thanks for the great review. I’m looking at buying 255 but the 745 sale price is pretty much the same. Looks like 255 has an upper hand in a feature comparison over 745, also that it’s the latest model. But I’m still curious Is there a benefit to buying 745 over the latest 255?
It's interesting. Garmin says the 255 doesn't have an altimeter/barometer but it does and doesn't show any of those metrics in the widgets. It's just baked into .fit files. The 745 also has wifi and the 255 does not as far as I can tell. I'd still probably lean towards the 255 if you're ok with those small sacrifices. Either way, I'd love to hear what you end up with and what you think of it. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@lencekk - You can add current elevation to your data screens in an activity. But I'm not seeing any altimeter or barometer options in the widget area.

@@mlegrand thanks Matt. That's the thing, I'm still thinking about it as my 935 is as good as new and a possible upgrade is mainly due to oximeter and garmin pay... so not sure... thanks so much for helping

Ive finally made the decision to get the 255s! My only issue is choosing grey or white haha. Do you find the white gets dirty / does it look very bright? (Thanks so much for this video, super helpful:) )
I haven't found that it seems any dirtier than any of the other watches I use. White is always a little tricky but I think you'll really like this device. I think the 255S (smaller one) comes in Powder Gray or Pink. Let me know what you think of it after you've had it for a while and thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. Hey Austin! I would say hold on to the 935 as long as possible. It might be worth upgrading at some point but if your 935 is still working well, you might wait and see if Garmin makes a 265 or 965 with an AMOLED screen or other options. 🤷🏻♂️
Good question. My understanding is that 7 day training load is effected by any activity type because the watch is looking at your heart rate while exercising to estimate your excess post-exercise oxygen consumption and a value to gauge training stress. (I will say wrist HR is crap when swimming because of the way these optical HR monitors work 🤷♂️) I've tested a lot of different brands for swimming and Garmin is still my current favorite because most other brands don't have a simple drill mode for kick sets or drills. (seems so simple) BTW, checked out your channel. Your stuff is super motivational. Subd, I hope you keep making videos. 👏🏻

Is the 255 overkill for someone just getting back into exercise? Or would 55 be adequate for walking, running, cycling, swimming and roller skating outdoors? Thanks!

Hi! Congrats for your videos :) I bought a Forerunner 255 S Music and I noticed something: the pedometer works even if I'm stationary but moving in the car. Does this happen on your tbh? Or is it a bug in mine?
I'll try to test this next time I'm wearing this one in the car. My guess is that the bumps might cause a few steps but it should show many false positives.
@@mlegrand I don't expect the product to be perfect. however I did a test: I used the garmin forerunner 255 music with two other watches on a 4 hour car trip and the garmin "walked" 4 thousand steps more than the others. there's no way this is normal! and even the first ones used. @Matt LeGrand Great video. Im been Garmin whole time. coros has my interest with battery life. I don’t care about music on watch. Be interested in seeing a video on your thoughts and comparison on Coros pace 2 vs Garmin 255. Sounds like Coros pace 3 might be this fall, have you heard anything? From Seen past RUclips reviews coros is behind on Garmin on app features/layout few other things, while a lot people may not are about that and just want a multi sport watch, with great battery life and simplicity. Coros ahead of Garmin on battery life and slightly lighter. Sounds like coros is working hard to catch up on all little features but keeping with better battery life….. Im trying to decide between coros pace 2 (or wait for coros pace 3 this fall) or get Garmin 255 for my 15 year old and also 13 year old (they are on swim and running team and both are gonna start doing Triathlon this summer. I’m not going to rush into purchasing watches for them. Anyway, Always great videos.
I’d say the 255 is a very very nice watch. The Pace 2 is an excellent value also. It’s also a smaller watch so that might be good or bad depending on what you want. I’d love to see a Coros Pace 3 in the fall. That would be awesome! Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
One thing good to know... Coros "magic" battery life is a trick - they meassure heart rate only every 10 minutes (in watch mode). In one second meassuring (realtime) you will get lower values.
Well , Is that good time to pick up 945 lte now for $450 ? or just get 255 S music for $400 ? I don't have plan to use LTE but I like that smaller watch case that may fit my small wrist well How both compare in regular GPS mode ? Thanks Matt
The 945 LTE has good GPS tracking. Not as good as the 255 but they’re both good enough that it shouldn’t be an issue. The 255 is a good option 1.3 inch screen vs the 945LTE which is a 1.2. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
I think the 255 is a better device but if your 945 is working well, I might suggest holding on to it and maxing out the value. Or you could try to sell it and see if it sells for a decent price. Either way both will work well for swimming biking and running. I’m like you, I don’t use maps or music too often. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. Not by default. There is a data field option called Jumps in ConnectIQ that you can add to any activity or there could be other ConnectIQ options. @Matt Legrand is the 255s screen size for 1.1" big enough and is it a noticeable difference compared to the 1.3" screen in the 46mm? I do have smaller wrist as well 6-6.25 inches. I am coming from an Amazefit Stratos 45mm circa 2019 (I do like the extra screen size for running though it does look a little big on my wrist) and the Apple Watch Series 5 44mm which I use as my daily driver though screen feels small for running. I am curious to hear your thoughts?
I don't have the 255s for comparison but I do have wrists the same size as you. I'd probably recommend the normal 255 but I've become used to bigger watches lately. Right now I'm wearing the Apple Watch Ultra and the Garmin Enduro 2 which are both huge. And overall, I'm still a big fan of the 255 after 6 months of usage. It's such a great value. @@mlegrand I don’t know if you’re gonna call it a double tap but it’s like you can push the button a little way down like soft and then it gets resistance and when you push harder it clicks like it should do and then the screen reacts. Those were on different days. I did wear these watches together most of the time but I haven't had them for the full 19 days needed to get good HRV data. I feel like I'm always switching around watches and different brands to compare and make other videos so it is tricky for stats to be 100% worth much. But to answer your question on how trustworthy all of this is, I personally don't trust it. If Garmin tells me to rest, I'm not going to change my workout plans. Yeah, I think it looks fine but I'm not really a fine watch person. Thanks for watching buddy!
2:56 Exactly ! That’s why the 955 is disappointing with its Fenix style thickness.

Hi! Thanks for this review. It's great. Now that you asked I personnaly would love to see a comparison between the 945 and 255. Like features, sport profiles, overall feeling etc.
Sounds great! I'll get to work on it. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Perfect I just ordered the FR945 F6s pro and instinct 2 to try on as the first two are on a good sale - if the 255 is comparable to the 945 I might have to try that also :/
Please do a specific triathlon video about the FR255! 👌
That would be fun! I’m on it.
Your videos are 🔥!!
Dude, thank you so much!!! That means a lot to me! 👍
You can now get running power on the 255 after it updates
It's something that I was really hoping they'd add and I'm so glad they added it. Here's my review of this watch after 6 months: ruclips.net/video/H-lDmNcKZtI/видео.html
I get a solid 6-7 days (having all functions on, except watch notifications/texts and I make sure I turn off bluetooth) I run and MTB alot and it's pretty good for the amount of GPS usage
That sounds pretty good Tyler! This is one of my favorite watches currently. I think it’s such a good value.
Good review and exciting to see this from Garmin. Yes very interested in seeing an in-depth look at the 255 as a strictly triathlon watch. My question would be - buy the 945LTE as price dips or the 255 as my only tri watch? As of your last review I was 945LTE bound.
I'd probably only look at the 945LTE if I really wanted to use the LTE features at this point. But that's just me. Glad you're doing well!!! 🏊♂️
Same doubt here!
Yea I’m thinking the same thing, 945lte or this watch.
@@Primetime_dads - Keep in mind the 255 has a slightly larger screen which I think you might like. I it's a pretty compelling option. I'll try to make a 955 vs 255 video in the next few weeks.
@@mlegrand 👍
I’ll try to put something like together! 👌
Awesome review like always!!!
If you would have to choose between FR 255 or fenix 6s pro for running and lifestyle which one would be? Keep it up!!
Yes, it’ll provide a real time estimate of steps per minute. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Great review as always Matt! Any reason one would get Swim 2 instead of this watch for pool and OW swimming as a primary workout? Other than price of course (difference is surprisingly not that significant between the two).
I can't seen any reason to get the Swim 2 over this watch. But I've never actually owned the Swim 2 or reviewed it so I could be missing something.

Hi Matt, great vid. I can't decide between the 255 or 955. Do you think the extra money is worth it for the extra features?
It's a hard call. I don't think the extra features are *needed*. The 255 is a very capable triathlon watch. If you want to save money, it's the way to go. The 955 is clearly a nicer watch so I think it's really tricky. My wife loves her touch screen watch but I tend to use buttons. I think it really depends on how you'd use it and your budget.

How do you think this 255 compares to the Apple Watch?
I’ve been testing the Apple Watch Series 7 for a long time and it’s really good. The new beta software has running power and a nicer triathlon mode. Personally, I think the 255 is a lot better for swimming, biking and running. Generally, any serious training. Where as the Apple Watch is a better ‘smart watch’. So it just depends on your priorities. 👌
Great video, how is the screen vs 955 ? I could see the touchscreen in 955 diminishes slightly contrast in other videos ? Do you also see that ?
Other videos might be showing the touch screen solar option. I'm not seeing any clear screen differences. I might try to make a 255 vs 955 video comparing them directly. I'll be sure to put the screen brightness directly next to each other in a shot. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
hi Matt, no doubting on Polar pacer pro and FR255 ... (thinking about running with Stryd power, so with that in mind..?) thanks!
I’d probably go with the 255 personally. But it all depends on what things you’d use it for and what company ecosystem you prefer.

But you've basic running power from the wrist without sensors , right? Only the sensors will give you the metrics, as far I'm reading. Is that it?
You get running power from the wrist now on this device. It’s calculated from the user mass, environmental data, and other sensor data.
I'm gonna get the 255s, seems like the perfect small biotracker@@mlegrand
Only GPS gives 36 hours, All system 8 Hours. what about automatic navigation selection? how long does it lasts?
Auto select will switch between modes based on the GPS conditions and strength of the signal. So that would depend on where you run. If you run in a big city or near sheer rock walls, it'd be less than if you just run in some open area or even trails. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment.

Is it worth upgrading from the 935 to the 255?
Hey Austin! I would say hold on to the 935 as long as possible. It might be worth upgrading at some point but if your 935 is still working well, you might wait and see if Garmin makes a 265 or 965 with an AMOLED screen or other options. 🤷🏻♂️
So it does nothing for swimming and only for cycling and running. Does the 7 day load or anything go off of swimming?
Good question. My understanding is that 7 day training load is effected by any activity type because the watch is looking at your heart rate while exercising to estimate your excess post-exercise oxygen consumption and a value to gauge training stress. (I will say wrist HR is crap when swimming because of the way these optical HR monitors work 🤷♂️)
I've tested a lot of different brands for swimming and Garmin is still my current favorite because most other brands don't have a simple drill mode for kick sets or drills. (seems so simple)

Can I pair Bluetooth headphones and a Polar h10 to the Forerunner 255 at the same time?
Yes, as far as I know. I haven’t tested this personally. But keep in mind that the H10 can output ANT+ which is 1 - many. So shouldn’t be any issues.

I don't have plan to use LTE but I like that smaller watch case that may fit my small wrist well
How both compare in regular GPS mode ?

@Matt Legrand is the 255s screen size for 1.1" big enough and is it a noticeable difference compared to the 1.3" screen in the 46mm? I do have smaller wrist as well 6-6.25 inches. I don't have the 255s for comparison but I do have wrists the same size as you. I'd probably recommend the normal 255 but I've become used to bigger watches lately. So the 955 says long run, long bike and the 255 says the opposite, to rest? How trustworthy is all this?😂
We don't know if he worn the 955 and 255 always together. And these kind of suggestions become more reliable after one month of data collection (wearing the watch 24/7).
I look at it as feedback but not instruction. It'd be fun to make a video like "I did exactly what Garmin told me for 6 weeks and here's what happened". Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand that would be a very interesting video! But in general that's the thing with HRV for me as well. Would be very intriguing to have data that guides easy and hard days. But in the end it's not always reflecting how I feel so it's basically useless because I go with body feeling in the end anyway
@@mlegrand Ha, I would love to watch that video to see how trustworthy Garmin's recommendations are!! I personally don't let these watches dictate my training schedule completely. I only use them as some form of reference points
May I ask ...
I have a problem when 22h every day the 255 auto set to sleep status and the light on screen off. So I had to set manual the 255 to off sleep status to normal using.
Note : I set sleep time, light fuctions and hard reset 255 already but stll stayed in this problem...😢
Thanks in adv...!
This sounds like an issue for Garmin to help with unfortunately. Sorry I can't be more helpful!
