How to Clean the Sig Sauer P226: Step-by-Step Guide
Properly cleaning and maintaining your Sig Sauer P226 is crucial to ensuring its long-term reliability and performance. Regular cleaning after use removes carbon buildup, dirt, and residue that can affect the function of your firearm. This guide outlines how to disassemble, clean, and lubricate your P226 according to Sig Sauer’s recommended procedures.
What You Will Need (links to cleaning gear at: skullcrush.com)
Cleaning rod with patch holder and bore brush
Nylon bore brush (for 9mm or appropriate caliber)
Cleaning patches
Nylon cleaning brush or toothbrush
Gun cleaning solvent
Gun lubricant or oil
Lint-free cloth
Step 1: Ensure the Firearm is Unloaded
Before starting, make sure your Sig Sauer P226 is unloaded and safe to clean.
Remove the magazine by pressing the magazine release.
Pull back the slide and lock it open using the slide catch lever.
Visually inspect the chamber to ensure no ammunition is present.
Release the slide to bring it forward.
Step 2: Field Strip the P226
To clean the P226, you will need to field strip it into its main components:
Lock the slide back by pulling it rearward and engaging the slide catch lever.
Rotate the takedown lever located above the trigger 90 degrees clockwise until it points downward.
Release the slide by pulling the slide slightly to the rear, then slowly allow it to move forward off the frame.
Remove the recoil spring and guide rod from the slide.
Take the barrel out of the slide.
You now have the P226 field-stripped and ready for cleaning.
Step 3: Clean the Barrel
Attach the appropriate bore brush to your cleaning rod and apply a few drops of solvent.
Run the bore brush through the barrel from the chamber end to the muzzle several times to break up residue and carbon buildup.
Remove the bore brush and attach the patch holder.
Run a cleaning patch through the barrel to remove loosened dirt and debris. Repeat this process with new patches until they come out clean.
Run a lightly oiled patch through the barrel to protect it from moisture and corrosion.
Step 4: Clean the Slide
Apply solvent to your nylon brush or toothbrush.
Scrub the inside of the slide, focusing on the slide rails, breech face, and extractor to remove any carbon and dirt.
Wipe down the slide with a clean cloth to remove excess solvent and debris.
Use a dry cloth to remove any remaining residue inside the slide.
Step 5: Clean the Frame
Use the nylon brush or toothbrush to scrub the frame, especially around the trigger assembly, slide rails, and internal components.
Wipe the frame clean with a dry cloth, removing any dirt or buildup.
Ensure no debris is left in the frame's moving parts or mechanisms.
Step 6: Clean the Recoil Spring and Guide Rod
Wipe down the recoil spring and guide rod with a clean, dry cloth.
No oil is required for this part, so make sure it’s dry and free from dirt.
Step 7: Lubricate the P226
Lubrication is critical to maintaining the smooth operation of your Sig Sauer P226. Be careful not to over-lubricate, as too much oil can attract debris.
Barrel: Apply a small drop of oil to the outside of the barrel and spread it evenly with your finger.
Slide rails: Put a drop of oil on each slide rail, both on the frame and inside the slide, ensuring smooth contact points.
Recoil spring assembly: A light drop of oil can be placed on the contact points of the recoil spring assembly, though it's not always necessary.
Trigger mechanism: Apply a small amount of oil to the trigger components, being careful not to overdo it.
Step 8: Reassemble the P226
Once everything is clean and lubricated, it’s time to put your Sig Sauer P226 back together:
Place the barrel back into the slide.
Reinsert the recoil spring and guide rod into the slide, ensuring that it’s properly seated.
Slide the slide back onto the frame, pulling it all the way to the rear until it locks in place.
Rotate the takedown lever back to its original position.
Perform a function check by cycling the slide and pulling the trigger to ensure the firearm operates correctly.
Step 9: Final Wipe Down
Give your Sig Sauer P226 a final wipe-down with a clean, dry cloth to remove any fingerprints, excess oil, or debris. If desired, apply a light coat of oil to the exterior for added protection.
Final Thoughts:
Cleaning your Sig Sauer P226 regularly is essential to maintaining its accuracy, reliability, and longevity. After each range session, make sure to perform a thorough cleaning to remove any buildup or residue. Following these steps and using the proper cleaning materials will help ensure your P226 operates smoothly for years to come.

Wow very detailed and easy to follow. Thanks a lot!
Thanks for the help on cleaning.
Happy to help!
Great video. I’d be careful of getting CLP on the breach face though. Thanks for all the details.
Nice video man! Shor, precise and to the point.
Thanks for creating this helpful video. Do you recommend applying grease or just oil for lubrication as I am a new owner and looking for feedback.
Thanks again for posting this informative video.
CLP is all you need.
Thanks kindly for this as today I just took possession of my new Sig Sauer P226 X-Five 9mm. I want to give it a good cleaning before I take to the range and now I know how to properly do it. Thanks and all the best.
Very clear and detailed 👍👍👍
Beginner here thanks
Excellent video
Great video. Thank you.
The best Video
I have the same gun as you in this video, took it to the range for the first time and used this video to help me understand how to best clean it afterwards. During the function check, my hammer will not drop without a magazine inserted, however it works perfectly fine with the magazine inserted. Is this something I should worry about?
Sounds like you may have the California compliant version with a magazine safety. You can contact Sig and give them your serial number to verify.
@@SkullCrushInc Yeah it's California compliant, I didn't realize that's one of the "features", thank you for your reply
Same thing for me you save me the time of having to ask the same question. I am in California as well. But this video was the Best, so thank you so much skull crush!
Thank you so much!
Thanks man !
Sehr gut erklärt 👏🇨🇭👍 Gute Video Qualität!!
Great cleaning and valuable cleaning tips. Im just curious. Does the hammer have to be cleaned and lubricated as well?
Yes, clean all visible surfaces. CLP will clean and lube.
10/10
What version of the 226 is this?
It’s the Scorpion
Damn great video.
Thank you sir!
Is the slide catch supposed to automatically lock when you rack it back all the way? Sometimes it automatically flips up and holds itself back. I have one that consistently does it. And another (mint) that does it only sometimes.
Yes, if there is an empty mag inserted
@@SkullCrushInc ooooooh… I’m dumb… ty
Is this color easy to come by?? I would love to buy the same exact pistol.
It’s hard to come by.
I have a sigsauer P226 elite scorpion that is in the camo color, Camel, 2nd railbut my rail I changed with a romeo1 attached and it is now a two-tone pistol.
When do you feel the need to further breakdown and clean the moving parts inside the grip? I have a 226 Legion I recently bought and ran a few rounds through and it has aLOT carbon and little brass shavings among the mechanisms. Is that normal? My 320 looksmuch cleaner with nearly the same round ciunt between cleanings.
Mine is clean inside the grips. Sounds like something a something a dry aerosol CLP could take care of.
@@SkullCrushInc Thanks. Your video is by far the best 226 cleaning video. The attention to detail and in depth considerations for proper cleaning steps blows all the other videos out of tge water.
I’ve been looking for a 226 or 229 in that color scheme. Do they still make them like that or do I need to have it professionally cerakote? Which gun variant do you have?
His is an Emperor Scorpion Elite, discontinued. You can currently still find plenty of standard Scorpion Elite models with a slightly different PVD finish (closer to FDE than the bronze-ish tone of the Emperor) and different color G10 grips. The third option would be a tan Mark 25 but I believe that model was from about 10 years back. Check Gunbroker for some Scorpion models.
@@f-grade appreciate the feedback. i went with an MPA DS9 commander. cost a little more but it is smooth as butter.
Sorry for the late reply, yes @f-grade is correct. It is an Emperor Scorpion Elite.
Could you also use clp for airsoft guns?
I don’t know. I don’t own any air soft.
❤
If it doesnt lock back like at end of your video, is problem about the magazine ?
Hard to diagnose without seeing in person. Someone else had the same issue with a California compliant model.
We think a lot alike. Why run the brush back through the muzzle end if you "shouldn't" do it with a rifle. Micro accuracy isnt as important with a handgun as a rifle but I want all my guns to be the best they can be with accuracy. My only prob. is why the bore snake here, lol? You did better than that before. Nothing was added to the cleaning to me (and maybe added small amount of crud, lol).
this is pretty much the same for a p229 right?
Yes.
@@SkullCrushInc just got a legion, this video is going to help big time. thanks!
When i did the the check without magazine it doesn’t work. But with magazine it does. Is it supposed to do that?
Sounds like you have a magazine safety. You probably have a California compliant version.
@@SkullCrushInc ahhh thanks. That explains it.
What holster you used for p226 legion
Skull Crush Holster
How should I clean the snake when needed? thx
Your bore snake shouldn’t be getting very dirty because the barrel should be pretty much clean by the time you use it. If it looks dirty, Just replace it.
how often should you clean your gun ?
After every use.
beautiful pistol 🙄
Great video!… clear and concise.
