    Thank you so much for uploading this video. I have a bathroom project where I took out a fiberglass shower and am getting ready to install a homemade tile shower and this information was perfect for me because I had to move the existing drain farther away from the wall and the pipe is buried in concrete so I don't have much to work with as far as cutting it off is concerned. I'm glad uncle billy had a better day! Living in New York must be a bummer as far as negativity goes!

    Hey Fritz;
    I can recall your video and my heart was feeling for you on that little task. I remember seeing it in a floor joist. They can be tough as you well know.
    the raptor makes it easier. takes a bit of time and for those who have a little more patience; they can pick it with the hammer and screwdriver.
    I hope fernco is watching and I get the call! LOL!!!
    Thanks very much friend!
    Enjoy your week! Al

    Hey Billy;
    Thanks! Don't sweat it. I see lots on here that is hard to figure out why people would do work a certain way. There are some youtubers that show a few tricks that are anything, but close to how the work should be done.
    I can well imagine you see lots of it in New York.
    Anyway have yourself a great weekend and thanks for responding! Al

    Just used your latter strategy on one of my below-ground water sprinklers. An inch and one-half threaded plastic pipe between the PVC and sprinkler was severed. The hack saw blade, screwdriver, hammer, and pliers did the trick! Thanks, Roger

    Hey Al,
    Great video brother. I've used both many times and get it done fairly easy either way. I use the reamer most often these days. I demonstrated it by hand in my first plumbing with pex video for Fritz.. I too use a multi-tool when picking one. Take care, Brett

    Thank you for getting back to me Al and your advice about staying away from heat guns
    On your video I noticed you saying that you had split a hair the ABS elbow when picking away and removing the old cemented ABS piece, and my question was if it would be OK to reuse the elbow with a split/crack without it leaking?
    You said that you use a cleaner to soften the ABS, what kind of cleaner do you use to soften ABS? Please let me know
    Beautiful part of the world you live in up there, my wife kid and I have made several trips up there and loved it, however for my health issues we prefer to live in warmer climates

    Hello Billy;
    You must work in construction because on small jobs and repairs this is something plumbers run into. I also have been in the trade for 33 years and if you haven't picked a joint in ABS you should try it.There are times when you cannot put a new fitting on where the hub of a fitting is sticking through the concrete floor for example. This video was for just a situation like that.

    I had an old busted toilet mount in my basement that was one piece right to the elbow below the slab. I had to pick away at it for quit some time removing the beveled section until I got to the elbow under the slab. Very confined I had to drill hole from the inside out all the way around and used a dermal tool to cut the spaces between the holes. Once I got the top off I used the method described above. I cut slots and very gently separated the inside pipe form the outside fitting.
    After I got a piece remove I was able to work my way around removing it in quarter section. I had to do a bit of prying so after I got the split started I used 2 screw drivers to work my way around using one to hold the small gap open and the other to do some very gentle prying ahead as the joint splits. The middle area was fused together but their was enough area not glued on the top and bottom inside the joint to guide the separation.
    Be very careful, go slow, and no twisting as you gently separate the joint
    Thank TheOldkid888 for your help

      Congrats on that part of the project! Nice job!
      You have to have a little patience when you are doing this, but it does work. Removing that first slice is the key. Once you get that done; the rest comes out easier.

    I bought one of these tools and tested it on a 2" pipe cause I had a job to do and it failed so I looked for another way seen a video where they heated a hole saw up and stuck it in the pipe and it heated it but didn't melt the outside pipe but got inside pipe soft where you could stick a screwdriver between the two pieces and just work the inside pipe out I then tested it and found it worked so use this way on the job I had to do and it worked great.... Now they make a much better tool than what you are using but the way I did it will be the way I do it agin if I have too...

    Hi there Al Great video I learned heaps from it thank you so much
    I have a similar situation to that one where my 2 inch ABS outside wall clean out line conected to an elbow broke inside the wall when I tried to open it and that I hope not to have to cut through the wall of our new home (15 years old)
    I plan to tackle this issue and before I start major surgery and make a mess I have some questions for you
    Question A:
    If I was to split my 2 inch ABS at the elbow (like you did on the video) would it be OK I to reuse that same elbow and cement it to a 2 inch ABS line?
    Question B:
    Would a heat gun also work on ABS to remove the broken piece inside the elbow and would you recommend using one as opposed to picking at the elbow? I saw videos on RUclips for removing glued PVC but not ABS
    Question C:
    If I succeed I wish to extend my 2 inch ABS clean out line outside my wall (and not as it was cemented to a cap inside the wall), do you or does anyone know If there is a code that I have to adhere to in order to do so, I moved to Phoenix AZ and I'm from Australia so my knowledge is limited
    Please let me know, thanks M

      If I am am getting the first question correct...you are wondering if you can glue a piece of abs pipe back into the elbow that you have removed the pipe out of? I remove pipe from fittings from to time and I dry fit the fitting with a piece of pipe to make sure it goes in correctly. If it is a little doesn't quite fit all the way in I will sometimes use cleaner to help soften the abs, then add the glue as quickly as I can and slide the pipe into the fitting. Apply the glue to the fitting first then the pipe. The pipe should then go in well for you. Hold it in place for a minute to make sure it doesn't back out any.
      I would stay away from a heat gun myself. I have never tried it, but melting the abd pipe like that will cause severe fumes and possibly a fatality. Cases of this that have occurred before from cutting threads on a lathe in a non ventilated area....they are deadly!
      I am north of the border in Canada myself. A cleanout is required at the base of every stack...It can definitely be extended outside of the wall without any issues.
      I hope this helps!!!
      Have a great week and let me know how you get along! Al

    Great video!
    I had a leak in an ABS pipe at a 90 degree angle where it comes out of a wall, so it would've been a big pain to cut out the fitting. I followed this video and it worked fine. My only suggestion is to go slow, and don't twist the screwdriver. Then, you shouldn't have any issue with the pipe cracking.

    Thanks a million Oldkid888! Was out of practice with the PVC and made an error that would have taken a while to fix, until I "picked a pipe". Amazing how easy it was. I used 2 screwdrivers and a small wood chisel (like taking an inner tube out of a bike tire - the old ones with thick rubber) and the whole thing just popped on out (1.5" pipe to 3"-1.5" Y connector). Haven't seen any vids on the mental aspect of laying the stuff out. Will subscribe and check out your other vids.

    Hello fellow caper, I recognize the accent. My tub has a clogged abs trap, and it's too close to several other adapters/elbows that have no room to cut them without taking the whole thing out, which would require taking my surround out and basically redoing the entire damn thing.
    My question is: is it possible to cut off and remove the trap off the 2 abs pipes it connects to, without having to take apart anything else? Like a special way I can cut out the trap leaving just the rings, and then carefully cut them off, then sand down all the glue and just pop a new trap on there?

      Hello Oreoloveboss,
      You may not have to go through all that.
      The last thing I do is remove any pipe or take the drain apart.
      I have made a video on unplugging a bathtub drain.
      I am not sure if you have seen it yet, but it may help if you haven't tried it yet.
      This is the name of it...How to Unplug or clear a bathtub drain Easily!!!
      If you have tried this then get back to me when you get a chance.
      What you mentioned is quite a little project. Try two plungers first and let me know how you get along.
      One for the drain and one to cover the overflow tightly while you plunge.
      The video shows how it works.
      Good luck!
      Thanks for commenting and good luck with the drain. Al

    Curious... ABS is a little more forgiving then PVC in terms of the force it takes to crack/shatter. Have you ever cracked a fitting wedging the screwdriver in and whacking on it?! Sometimes though, like where pipe comes up through a floor or wall, this is the only way to recover a fitting without cutting the pipe off.

    • @TheOldkid888
      @TheOldkid888  10 лет назад +1

      Hello Kyle;
      If I have to remove a fitting from a piece of pipe; I will place a few cuts in the fitting and remove that piece and then continue with a screwdriver and remove the entire fitting!

      Hello George;
      Labour is more expensive then the fitting, but there are certain situations where you have no choice, but to pick the joint; such as coming through a concrete floor. Instead of cutting the floor up to get to the joint; it would be much much easier to pick the joint!
      I placed it on the floor to allow people to get a much better picture of what actually takes place.

      Hello heavyweight23;
      Once you have the piece of pvc out of the fitting; you can reglue a piece of pipe back into the fitting. You have to use a little more cleaner to soften up the old glue in the fitting, add the glue and you will be all set!
