@@aocortez9172 Even if I'm against communism, I think McArthur plan was a little out of the league. . .Using more atomic bombs would have been a bad idea, specially when the Soviet Union have also in their disposal for that time. They will have drop bombs on the UN troops or give them to China to use then against american troops, and it would have gotten way worst.

@CommandoDude Because (to Americans at least) it came between WWII and Vietnam and didn't last as long. But I can tell you, from visiting South Korea, that they very much remember it in their media.
My neighbour was a British tank driver there. He said in one engagement the chines swarmed the tanks and climbed on top of them

That’s correct. A ceasefire but no permanent resolution.
Dan 240Z There have been dozens and dozens of incidents along the border aside from that. NK soldiers would point their weapons into the south side, eventually being shot and then their friends would use the rope they had tied around themselves to haul the body back. Common in the 60s 70s. Then there was that time there was an axe fight over a tree. When I was stationed there it was not uncommon for there to be a national search alert for NK commandos who had used a mini sub or speedboat to come across into the south on a sabotage mission. Also not uncommon for there to be assassination attempts, a random bombing, etc. Under the current Dear Leader things have actually calmed down a bit.

In 2010, NK sunk an SK submarine and also bombarded its island with artillery. Also, recently, a Japanese coastguard sunk an NK ship posing as a Chinese ship, I think they are always sinking NK ships. So yeah, the war isnt over.
This Korean War was one giant tug of war.
One that ended in a draw.

Should have mentioned the Civilian casualties. They were what made that war such an absolute catastrophy.
Also, China kept many of its casualties a secret. They lost an estimated 2-6 million soldiers. Due to poor record keeping on the Chinese half, we don't know how many. The numbers chosen for this video are extremely conservative in the numbers. Also, the Chinese Soldiers lost are mostly under-equipped human wave troops attacking fixed fortified positions without armor or artillery support.

Most of Chinese casualties were cause by weather and poor logistical support. They couldn’t even cook their food due to US air domination. When 38th Corp arrived Korea, they only had summer uniforms with them, some of it’s units were in ambush positions in mountains with temperatures close to -40 ℃。 They lost almost 50% force before battle started due to frostbites.
Those were mainly defected forces from the KMT who Mao Zedong distrusts. Not providing proper winter gear was an deliberate act.

Could we have an indepth tactical-analysis of a particular battle in this - or one of your other 20th century conflict videos - like you do for the other battles of the middleages/antiquity?
These types of campaign overview videos are fascinating, but I think it would be fascinating to see 20th century rectangles battle it out.
General Matthew Ridgway really pulled the Korean War out from a defeat and averted nuclear escalation. Truly one of the great commanders of that or any era.

If you think the only way to win was to drive the North Korean state out of existence and drive the Chinese out of Korea, sure, he didn't. However, Ridgway prevented defeat, restored the border essentially to the 38th Parallel, and, most importantly, he did it without escalating to a wider war, which would have almost certainly gone nuclear. It's not the flashy "total" victory MacArthur had wanted, but it was a realistic one for the configuration of power that existed and the larger set of Cold War tension. Probably the only way for MacArthur's vision to succeed would have been to turn the Yalu River into an impassible nuclear wasteland.
David Carlson winning was impossible. There was no chance the UN forces would have pushed back to the Yalu river, and if they had they risked Soviet intervention or increased Chinese forces.
@@davidcarlson4958 Actually it was a victory. South Korea still exist and is a wealthy prosperous small nation with a great economy! North Korea is pretty much starving and in constant need of large quantities of food to survive. So... yes! South Korea and the UN won this one in the long term.
@poortaiwanese McArthur's pride and ego didn't interfere until after capturing Seoul and Pyongyang. His Incheon landing was brillant and superb! North Koreans didn't see that coming.

This war prove that war are not won by superior weapons, but by human will and determination.
9:24 MacArthur wouldn't have been removed if there was mere "disagreement". Rather, MacArthur took concrete actions to subterfuge presidential authority over foreign affair. The spark of his dismissal was when he went beyond directing military operations towards his own strategic goals and instead held press conference contradicting Truman's direct order and Truman's strategy. The mere word of "disagreement" just doesn't do justice in describing the situation. In the grand scheme of things, the argument over nukes was a sideshow in that MacArthur's dismissal. The position of Truman administration towards the use of nuclear weapon was that it was always a possibility. And of course that's their position. That's doing the basics of nuclear extortion. Meanwhile, the use of nukes wasn't in any concrete plan of MacArthur.
Mac skated on thin ice far longer than he should've been allowed to. In repelling the NK attack past the 38th parallel he'd crossed the line. Only his "hero" status and the seemingly successful drive to the Yalu kept him in his position. When his highness caused the disaster at Chosin I think Truman was looking for a way to spank him hard and Mac handed Truman the whip with his own mouth.
@@LuvBorderCollies I think Truman admin's records which includes conversation among Truman and aides as well as minutes from meetings are digitized and available on the internet. (Though I may have read the following elsewhere.) When conversing about dismissing MacArthur before the deed in private, Truman did think of it as a big deal. He knew people would really scrutinize the decision. One of the things he said was that incompetence and stupidity was not going to be the reason MacArthur should be dismissed (and instead overstepping chain of command was the reason and in that MacArthur had no excuse.) Well, if Truman wasn't a little bitter about MacArthur's unwarranted insistence that China wouldn't intervene, he probably wouldn't have made such comments.
Meanwhile, MacArthur's exploiting his hero status and overstepping chain of command was nothing new. When he handled the occupation of Japan and the making of its constitution, it was done largely by his own direction. Merit of specific actions aside. The Department of War had headed by Eisenhower had to give 'authorization' to MacArthur after the fact over the whole thing. Of course, the earlier and the better known story was from Hoover administration when MacArthur violated expressed written order to not shoot at veteran protesters during the economic crisis.
@@ecpgieicg Thanks for the excellent reply. Common sense told me Truman needed to be careful of public opinion in his handling of Mac. At the time it wasn't well known that Mac had dismissed repeated warnings of the Chinese buildup because he knew better. In fact, it wasn't until the late 80's that Army intel staffers started talking to film makers about the truth of Chosin and Bugout's blunders.
This is my own opinion based on my dad's experience and an uncle, but down to the pfc's everyone knew Mac was bad news and caused thousands of needless deaths, they just didn't know the details of how it all came about til decades later. That's why morale was so rock bottom.
My dad wasn't at Chosin but rushed there in early '53 as a replacement for all the casualties in the 7th Inf Div. The uncle was USMC in the "central sector" and seriously wounded in Oct 52.
I'm looking for a hardcover book published by the RoK about the war. Its got a photo of my dad overlooking a POW return and he's got a 3.5" bazooka with him. The rabid leftists in the city library removed all these types of books (included hunting & guns)so I lost access to it 20 yrs ago. Haven't been able to find a copy since.

You have to think, Truman came in a time where most of the military leadership previously served under President Roosevelt who gave the military a lot of leeway in terms of how the war was fought. Therefore, the military wanted things done a certain way compared to the politicians.
Withdrawal to the 38th Parallel is referred to as "the longest retreat in US military history."

The conduct of this war by the US at the head of the coalition is quite impressing, and demonstrates plainly that they’ve learned their lessons from WW2. Being able to turn over two situations looking stalled at best or dire at worst is a demonstration of great military skills. The shifting points from the Pusan perimeter and between the 3rd and 4th offensive really makes this war interesting to learn.
I would have liked more detailed depictions of the major engagements of this conflit, because i feel that modern military warfare is too often only presented on the strategical level, not enough on the tactical level.

Imperial Officer that’s because they prefer to paint him as a villain, suppressing any notion of a military government, especially with Eisenhower becoming president right after. McArthur’s opinion might have been extreme, but if you recall his rule of Japan was anything but bloodthirsty. He’s more practical and visionary than others. He viewed his role as a soldier beyond purely militaristically, which made him a threat to the political class and rightfully so. Don’t get me wrong. If I’m Truman, I would have done the same but think about this: a divided Korea is an issue till day while a communist ruled Vietnam is veering towards America for help against China eventually. McArthur might have seen something that others couldn’t at the time.
@@aaronlimeuchin7352 I think he was considering options more than outright shouting for nukes. After all, at the time, the effect of nuclear strikes have not been throughly studied and many generals were disappointed by Truman s inaction that led to Communist victory in China, especially considering his staunch anti-Stalin stance in Europe and Korean intervention. The result of not finishing off Korea might have spilled over to Vietnam and later interventions but of course those were hindsight. Ive always agree with Truman more than McArthur, but sometime I wonder if more McArthurs are running the operations in the Middle East, perhaps it would not turn out to be such a mess.
@@aaronlimeuchin7352 They have a fallout not on the nuke but a culmulation of hostility between the two of them with McArthur wanted the military to have freedom to do as it pleases to combat communism. He did so by communicating as little as possible with Washington and took decision by himself, not mentioning his offhand comments on various occasion which angered Truman. McArthur was more responsible for staffing in Korea as he prefer to direct from Japan rather than traveling to Korea, one of the factor that made him infamous in the eye of the troops.
@@lc9245 Thing is, MacArthur wasn't just pitching it as an option. He (and others in the Truman administration) were very publicly calling for the use of atomic bombs in Manchuria and Korea. The reason Truman didn't do it was because in 1949, the Soviets had successfully built their own nuclear weapons and Stalin had actually called Truman to tell him that if the Americans used nukes in Korea, the Soviets would nuke Europe. Not quite Mutually Assured Destruction, but it was clear that a proto form of the MAD theory certainly played in Truman's decision to get rid of MacArthur. The other was that MacArthur was openly questioning and undermining Truman at home politically which Truman could not have.

So the Korean War was basically a sumo match where each side tried to push the other off the Korean peninsula. That's what I'm getting from these animations.
It's a strange proxy war, and it's also a war of unequal firepower. China and North Korea have only the army, and the United Nations has the air supremacy and navy. If there are planes and warships on both sides, the outcome should be different.
The Chinese forces would have run over Korea in a month if the un forces didn't have airsuperiority. That's why a modern conflict should be avoided by all means by Nato. China has come a long way since the korea war.
Yes and if the UN had the same population and easy logistics as China then things would have been different too. No point dreaming up hypotheticals.

At the very beginning the north had a modern mechanized army and the south was just a police force with no armor.

One of Mao’s son died in the war, he was part of the logistic divisions. I think this had a lot of impact on Mao’s decisions
Mao almost lost his entire family in the revolution and this war. He truly devoted everything to the new born nation.
That son spent his entire adult life in USSR, Mao hardly saw him while he was alive. I don’t think they are that close to each other.

Higher echelons of the CCP were critising him because of the damage the GLF did to the economy and the millions of lives lost. He was at risk being sidelined. Great how you discussed the military casualties but I wish you covered the civilian casualties of the conflict as there were approximately 2 million casualties in addition to the 1 million military casualties
I think they ignored the south Korean casualties, which was not okey.
Wait, so you didn't even tackled one of the most intense theaters of the war, the war in the air? No mentioning of the fierce air duels where US and Soviet air forces for the first and only time in history fought one another? No mention of the massive US bombing campaign of the North Korea that possibly killed millions of people (if it's to believe to the US generals, they killed some 20% of the North Korean population)? Also no mentioning of the total civilian casualties on either side? Guys, these are the serious flaws in telling the story of the Korean war. But nevertheless, it was an interesting episode.
Yea the video only mentioned that NKoreans called on the Soviets for air support and that was it. Would have been nice to hear the video at least mention a bit about Mig Allley.

There were “friendly” fire incidents over Europe at the end of WW2 between US and Soviet aircraft.
@@konstantinosnikolakakis8125 I know for those, but meant deliberate engagements on large scale. US pilots were ordered to shot down USSR ones and vice versa. So it kinda was the closest thing to the full war between those two superpowers.

@@im1tta I know but the bulk of the fighting took place after World War II. I know about the fighting 1930's. Mao long march. still fighting was on and off between Kuomintang (KMT)-led government of the Republic of China (ROC) and the Communist Party of China (CPC) also fighting the Japanese 1937-1945.

I thought Chinese were pretty bad in this war but they nailed Allies hard.
Only thing that saved them was air superiority and the over-stretching of the defense line.
This was just a year or so after the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949, China was barely able to stand on its two feet at this time, but the military was very strong and numerous.

The US in general, and MacArthur in particular, were experiencing what one could call victory fever as well as a raised level of expectation. WWI and WW2 were recent events in 1950. Both ended with the complete capitulation of an enemy government, featuring a signing ceremony. This is unusual in history as the vast majority of wars in history don't end this way. Because WWI and WW2 ended with such an abject capitulation/signing ceremony, this raised the expectation of some Americans, especially MacArthur. Mac could not fathom an ending to the Korean War in any way other than what he experienced with Germany and Japan--with North Korea and China meekly signing surrender papers and a time and place of Mac's choosing. Truman correctly wanted the war prosecuted as a limited war, not an unlimited war, which is what WWI and WW2 were. A limited war with the limited objective of the South Korean government being preserved. Truman had no alternative but to fire Mac. In this way, Mac was a victim of his own past success--which corrupted his judgment.
Take into account that the USSR did most fighting against Germany, 80% of the German army fought on the Eastern front and the Core base of the Japanese army, Manchuria, was captured by the Soviets. Americans and Europeans have a flawed picture of those wars.

Too big to cover up, too real to twist the fact that they not won (not like say 1812) but not too humiliating to impact the general public (the humiliation by vietnam was far worse)

Actually the stalemate saved the Chinese. Their supply condition was truly beyond physical limitation and could totally be considered as a humanitarian disaster. But since the stalemate, their supply was gradually recovered and reached a bearable standard. That's why they can hold the line for another 2 years.
This also saved the POWs. At the beginning of Chinese offensive, they have totally no preparation and resources for UN and ROK POWs and just let them die on road. When it came into stalemate, the survived POWs also had a better life, which at least better than what happened in WW2

my ex's grandfather was a veteran of this war - on the PVA side. He said he lost many friends in that war but grateful to have survived and tell the tale.

@Hoàng Nguyên "Knockwd out"? Yeah right. USA was beating North Vietnam in nearly every battle they fought together. The body count of communist forces when they faced US forces (not South Vietnamese) is proof of that. What won that war was bad leadership during the era, it's containment/policing strategy and American's lack of faith in the objective of the war. American sentiment led to US withdrawal from that war. Anyway Communists signed Paris Peace Accords essentially accepting South Vietnam as a sovereign nation and an end to the war and therefore a defeat in a strictly offensive war. When the reneging communists reinvaded the South, the US government would not accept any plan to go back into vietnam or provide support. That's the only way the communists could win, take the high casualties and hope the war would become so unpopular at home the US would pull out, they did. But what did the people of the South really win? South Korea is also independent but they are one of the wealthiest nations in East Asia compared to the communist North worshipping the Kim family and can't even be seen from space. Likewise, all vietnam got was the distinction of being another impoverished communist country, one of the poorest in the Asia (and pretty poor globally). But hey I hear they're having to embrace Capitalism to survive after all, even hear they've opened their first McDonald's restaurants there. Because in the real world Communism is a stupid, failed doctrine.

He didn't agree an armistice. Chinese started the last campaign in Korea war and destroyed 2 south Korean divisions. After that he agreed armistice but did sent any delegate nor sign the paper.
