ODB: When I was a small kid in the mid 70s I read about Kareem's life and got to know him as a person through the book, not just as a baller. He is a great intellect, a wonderful person and a thoughtful leader. We need more like him.
His autobiography "Giant Steps" is a great read.

Kareem is the name that he chose for himself. He's fighting leukemia and you fight over what name he was born with.
He's always been a class act.

i never knew he was such a nice guy. i wasnt born yet when he played so all i've seen are old clips showing how aggressive and hardnosed he was. its good to see this side of him off the court. thats the perfect kind of player anyway, one thats kind and intelligent off the court but wants to bust your teeth in once they're betwwen the lines

Kareem did write his own speech. I had to look it up, that's why it took me 3 years to reply ;-)

I'm proud to be a Bruin pretty much because of this guy... and Jack Black. LOL.

He was Lew Alcindor in the day.

why couldn't Mr. Abbel Jabber have written his own speech rather than read someone elses. He was, probably, the most intelligent basketball player ever.

He changed his name because of his religion so it is Kareem.

Ben Bernanke went to Princeton too. Look what he's doing to the US dollar and economy.

Keep up the good work, keep practsing, brother. :)

Then why are you showing disrespect towards him and his religion by calling him "Lew Alcindor"? That's not his name anymore and you should respect that.

@drnubian Quite a contrast from the Lebron's of the world...humility, class and eloquence

@redwallace It takes some a life time to get where they belong, and Mr. Jabbar made in less time than most. I remember when he was considered radical and a threat to the establishment. He's still the same. It's the American society that has caught up to him.
