    The PRR Q1 is such an oddball steam engine. Whoever thought that having a set of cylinders placed backwards underneath the firebox was probably drunk out of his mind when he thought of that. My favorite Pennsy duplex type was the Q2. The only duplex steamer that was actually successful unlike the others they made.

      IDK that's kinda harsh man. The Q1 is sick. Without it, there'd be no Q2s!

    That T1 sound set sounds great in that engine! The Q1 skirted (streamlined) version is my dream O scale engine. I hope I can find one someday soon. Love all the updates you made to this Q1

    I have an MTH Q2 which I absolutely love. It has displaced my MTH S1 as my favorite Pennsy steamer. My 3rd Rail S2 and Weaver T1 are out for EER installs. I may look to purchase a Q1 later this year,. I was hoping that MTH produced this engine before they close and I don't see Lionel producing it in the future. I have 2 Pennsy M1's which i absolutely love. Thanks so much for this video.

    I like the pennsy locomotives, I like the aesthetic they made but I never ever understood why they never just went with a 4-10-4 rather than a duplex. Even the q2 locomotives were only slightly more adept than the j1s

    • @normstrains

      It’s really awesome they were so willing to experiment right at the onset of mass dieselization.

      @@normstrains yeah, absolutely. Kinda makes me think if the USRA didn't stop them, they might've made a 4-10-4 or maybe something crazier

      eBay, sometimes Amazon, train shows, and lately PRRTHS.

    this vid is really helpful because I'm the middle of full blown brain surgery on my 3rd Rail FEF. Out with the EOB, in the with ERR. Gonna go the tender shell antenna route but with kapton tape, I just don't have a source for tiny nylon screws to hold the shell on. Then for the chuffs I think I want to reuse the cams and wire the cherry switches to the ERR cruise board, or should I go with the magnets? I'm super picky about getting the chuffs spaced right and lining up the magnets gets super tedious without a jig like the kind you made.

    • @normstrains
      @normstrains  2 года назад

      I got nylon 4-40 screws at Home Depot when I used to set up the shell antenna, the I would drill and tap the shell to accept them. If it already has chuff cams, I would use them. If they are like the ones in my L1s, they can even be adjusted for crankpin synch.

      @@normstrains many thanks 👍 This is my first full ERR conversion so if all goes well I'll seriously consider updating more of my conventional stuff.

    Hey Norm, I got a 6k resin printer. If you would like any high detail parts, let me know. I’m trying to get PRR doghouse files to print. Maybe the tender deck you made, could have a diamond plate texture added and I could print out a couple for you?

    • @normstrains

    Norm, where did you initially learn to do changes to electronics and mechanical parts. Getting very hard to get repairs to my mth original protosound engines at reasonable costs.$300 to 450 per engine here in nj/ pa. I would luv to learn and upgrade some mth engines to protosound 2 and 3. Got 30 premier proto engines. Mth does still sell protosoumd 3 boards on their parts site but not complete protosound upgrade kits any longer

    • @normstrains
      @normstrains  2 года назад

      I learned by fixing and modifying my own trains over the years. I can’t be of much help on MTH stuff, you may want to peruse the OGR forums for help on their engines.

      @William Kolina I've got a zw-L and handheld and 2 180 watt powebricks still sitting in the box, unused, since I purchased them new 3 years ago. So I'll look at tmcc. Certainly, at $1600, 1800 and $2500 for lionels newest visionline stuff, repairing 20 or more of my mth premier engines seems at least a consideration. none of my 40 to50 engines have more than 8 hours run time. I stopped doing trains, completely disillusioned with problems with atlas track, especially the 16 atlas switches I bought 9 years ago. Back then, atlas switches had major design and production qc crap, unknown to me. Im back now to give all this maximum effort...with a new, larger trainboard. Any help is appreciated
