  • B-17 airman stationed in England during WWII with the 398th Bomb Group, 603rd squadron, describing his training and missions. The 398th Bomb Group flew B-17 Flying Fortresses from Nuthampstead, Hertfordshire on strategic bombing raids over Germany. Taylor flew 31 combat missions. Good discussion about the Norden Bomb Sight.

It has to be massively stressful flying in those conditions. I drove a truck for 20 years, night and day on narrow winding roads avoiding car drivers and other trucks. The concentration was mentally fatiguing. I don't blame anyone for getting out. No-one was shooting at me and I wasn't carrying tons of h.e. And if you're talking about cliques to me it means you're not a team player.

I was able to find the obituary of the the crew's original (West Point graduate) pilot. He must have recovered and continued his combat flying because his obituary states that he flew 29 combat missions by the end of the war. He had a 30 year distinguished career and retired as a Colonel. He was a noted expert on the Soviet military, along with his wife, after he was a military attaché to the Soviet Union.
