I trained at Renzo's in the 90s. My first class was with Craig Kukuk, which was also my last class with him. I was told he was out on back surgery, but I now know that there were other problems. Anyway, I took many classes with Matt and Nick Serra and Vinny and Mito (sp?), but it was always special when Renzo would show up. One time, I was there with a friend, Jeff, who usually took the classes with me. Jeff and I drove to NYC from RI, but this day, Jeff could not afford the class and just came to watch. Vinny noticed that he wasn't training and asked him what was up, and when Jeff told him he didn't have the money for the class, Vinny went right over to Renzo and began whispering to him. Renzo looked over and shouted, "Come on Jeff, let's train!" Renzo was always super cool, super fun, super bad ass, and super nice.
Wonderful story. Renzo is such a likeable person. I Met him in Rio in 1987. Soon after, I had him out to Australia - and so the seed was planted 'downunder'. I had many an adventure with Renzo (and his cousins the Machado's) back in the 80's. Formative times. Thanks to Firas for this bit of history - and to John for the contributions he has made on the landscape (both in fashion and BJJ).
Meant Renzo in Dubai in nogueria gym 5 years ago when I was a white belt. He showed us a technique and while drilling the technique he made sure everyone does it right . Even me when I was a white belt who just started. He’s always had time after class if you had any questions or having a quick chat.
Sakuraba was not a big guy. He was slightly taller and might have outweighed Renzo by 10 lbs... maybe. Fact is, Sakuraba beat Renzo when both fighters were in their prime. Also, Sakuraba had WARS!!! He was fighting Rampage, Vitor, Wanderlei, Cro Cop, Igor...etc. literally HWs and LHWs. When they grappled, Sakuraba was a shell of himself. That grappling match didn't mean anything.
Seems like a bit of revisionist history there. Sakuraba and Renzo were both around the same weight. Renzo needed to push the action as it was a very close fight that could have gone Sakuraba's way, especially with Japanese judges. He got caught by a better fighter, and someone who also fought anyone no matter their weight class.
what? sakabura was 10 lbs heavier (182.6 and 172) and danaher clearly stated all 3 judges had renzo winning so that alone disproves your entire point. the revisionist is you
Charity Jesus. Charity is love that gives it always believes and hopes. James 3:16 "For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work." Evil is to be uncaring and destructive in your relationship to others for selfish gain, or to be internally selfishly weak. Matthew 4:17 "For at about that time Jesus began to preach repent the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand." Repent: to change your mind, to believe Jesus: (Yeshua, The Anointed King) and what he said, to ask for forgiveness. Note: When someone asks for forgiveness at each point in the past you'd done something wrong you wish you had done the right thing. God wanted to know who thought being a good person is important, and who will value a relationship with him and others through a concept called love; thereby, being a good tree whose fruit is good and of sweet savour to those in it's presence. Be Born Again John 3 Seek the Lord while he may be found, be diligent in doing and pray for wisdom. 1 Kings 3:5-12, Hebrews 11:1 + 6, Isaiah 55:6 For Jesus is the way to truth to life.
