You've also got the Switch 2 taking its time, APU handhelds gaining popularity, 1080p still dominating, the looming recession and GPU prices going up again ... I think studios have a lot of reasons to make their minimum specs 4-6gb for some time yet.

    I got one of this cards, tho MLSSE branded. It may be the same supplier as it looks pretty much the same as this one (8pin power conector, but that just enables a bit of OC).
    I was originally searching for replacement fans for an xfx 480 (current ones can't spin that fast no more), thought it might be worth the trip when I stumbled on the product page. What I got surpassed the old 480
    From what I understand, these are remanufactured cards made out of salvaged cores mostly from mining GPUs. I've seen many models, ranging from 3080 to these 580 2048sp. 580 2048sp, 5600xt, 6600m, 5700xt are readily available (at least for the time being)

    I was gaming with an HP ITX RX 480 4GB until last year and the 4 GB wasn't really an issue. The i5-6402p was the limiting factor in that build, even though it held up amazingly well for an older 4 core (no HT) CPU. I got that RX 480 for 45 bucks shipped used in 2018. I thought I was buying a 4GB R7 450 for a cheap low power GPU to throw in an old Dell to give to somebody needing a PC (and that card would at least let them do some gaming- 720p and older/casual games). but then that HP ITX RX 480 arrived. It wasn't what I wanted for the old Dell, but my original RX 480 died on my gaming PC about the same time so I just swapped that one in. Best 45 bucks I ever spent. Thing is tiny too. It's now in another system I gave away (after thoroughly cleaning the card)- so it lives on. Reminds me of my first AMD/ATI card- the HD 5670 1GB. That card was usable for a very long time and I got it cheap open box- like under 60 bucks.

I have two MSI 580's in a X79 1680 v2 @4.4 using them for 4 years now overclocked. Still blows me away, the drivers/performance got better and better as they aged. When using FSR 2.X you can get some impressive 4K results. Horizon Zero run at 75-60 fps for me on one overclocked genuine 580. CP77 at 60 average at 1080p medium/high with FSR quality.

Any clone card may or may not be a used gpu chip, I would highly suggest leaving it running overnight on a game load and come back and check it the next day if it still posts and no artifacts, there are reports that some of them dont hold up and are fragile, they dont really test them at their factorys once they are assembled, all they are doing is a quick check to see if it posts. Even a legit card wether its new or used you really should do the same overnight stress test.

    TL;DR: As far as i've heard this is a version of RX 580, released years ago for the chinese market (with lower specs). It's not the same as the original RX 580 but a marketed version of a card with specs between 570 and 580.
    There's a high chance these are not new, but bought and they just change the cooler kit and resell it. And you are not sure if it was used for mining (heavy process).
    So it's a bit of a gamble, but worth it for $65, if you cant afford anything and wanna game on 1080 on medium settings with 60Hz.

    Honestly 70$ does not surprise me. If anything they should almost be cheaper at this point. The RX480 was 230$ for the 8gb model in 2016. Yes like 6.25 years ago! it was never a high end card to begin with. Its just that todays market has really messed up pricing on everything.
    I was one of those who purchased an RX 580 in early 2019 for just 100$. Which is roughly what I felt they were worth back then.
    In fact we are to a point where RX580s are finally showing their age in the most recent titles. RX580 in 2023 is what HD Radeon 7970 was in 2019 and these two cards are only like 60% difference in performance. I Know because I had a HD 7970.

    I'm deeply curious about how these things came to exist.
    I mean, they won't be "new", right? The GPUs are probably salvaged from old cards, just like on those old fake 1050 Tis. Did someone find a bunch of ex-mining cards with dead VRAM, perhaps?

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  Год назад

      I honestly don't know. I've tried to get to the bottom of it (aka 30 minutes of googling), and I couldn't. I don't think anyone knows for sure, no one who is answering questions anyways. Either a) they're new gpus, as in, they're still making rx 580 gpus somewhere. b) they're salvaged GPUs from ex mining cards or whatever. c) they're new gpus that were made a while ago and weren't turned into graphics cards for whatever reason. I'm leaning towards C, this seems to make the most sense. Maybe that's why this 2048sp version exists, if AMD had some RX 580 gpus where several of the cores were bad and had to be binned, they could push up the clock speed spec up to compensate and release them as a different GPU (but give it to the Chinese, they'll buy anything!). Or maybe AMD just had more 2048sp's available than demand could work with so they focused on the regular rx 580s and now they have bulk inventory to offload. I can only guess. I have yet to hear a reliable explanation that is anything more than speculation.

    • @SiestaSoneca
      @SiestaSoneca Год назад +3

      Hey Iceberg, follower of your channel here. You do great work! Simping aside, these cards are made from new PCBs, memory modules, VRMs, video out connections, etc. BUT, the GPU core has 99.9% probability of being used. Either from a mining GPU that died, or from a Cyber Cafe PC. Or even from a mining GPU that didn't die, but became useless after ETH went POS.
      I'm from Brazil and prices here are always awful. Taxes are way too high and sometimes I feel like our local retailers buy from foreign retailers instead of getting batches from the board partners. I suffered through the pandemic with lower end hardware and just got my 580 2048SP from AliExpress (paid 72 USD) and couldn't be happier with it.
      I don't ignore the risks of buying one of these. For instance, there's no real warranty. But at least this time around the chinese miners aren't just dumping tortured cards filled with dust, but (apparently) selling the chips to manufacturers that are actually putting some effort into making the product desirable. Some versions of the card even have custom made backplates from these chinese brands.
      Also, considering the fact that AMD released the 580 2048SP and the 590 GME (the 590 GME is just an OC'd RX 580, without the half node-shrink, nothing more, nothing less) in 2018, there's the hope that we'll have good driver support for at least another couple of years.
      So, to answer your question about them being "new"; no, they won't. But to give credit when it's due, some sellers on AliExpress detail this fact and announce the card as being "98~99% new", which is kinda funny.
