Great video, but be careful not to be superficial when you say that games of Duke's era didn't have a strong political aspect. To a greater or lesser degree, everything is a reflection of the politics of its time. Duke Nukem 3D may not make its messages clear due to the limitations of the engine - don't think, however, that the pig cops and mentions of OJ Simpson (two of many examples) are random. The very attempt to challenge the limits of censorship is itself a political act. In addition, you're right saying that games from big companies these days tend to surf on the “politically correct” bandwagon, but that's a generalization. There are many, many games that, like Duke Nukem in its day, are also there to provoke - but like Duke in its day, it's not common for these games to come from multi-million dollar distributors. Nostalgia is a delight, yes, I love it, but don't let it cloud your judgment.
I find it fascinating how people term things "political" (especially in the US). Duke Nukem was originally styled as a pastiche on 80s action heroes and the masculinist ideals they espoused. Isn't that in itself "political"? I think most of us "SJWs" were laughing along with the game at how ridiculous the character was, not revering him as something to aspire to (he wrote an in game book called "Why I'm So Great" ffs). I'm wondering when games were not dealing with pressing social issues? As far as I'm aware "Missile Command" had quite a pointed message in that. What the programmer went through in it's development is quite fascinating. It's funny how nostalgia can be weaponized into a "us vs them" mentality.
For those who played DukeNukem3D and absolutely loved it and want MORE I HIGHLY recommend a game called "Ion Furry" It's made in the same 3D realms design but in the modern era. It's got a female protagonist, but with the SAME kick butt one liners. It's amazing. Another great "Boomer Shooter" is Turbo Overkill. I love this game and I'm gonna age myself for a moment, this came out at the perfect time, and was elevated for me personally from the movies at the time, like the Fifth Element. Great times in multiplayer, had a friend we did co-op the campaign in way back, i always let him take charge and run into mobs and I would be like "I'll save you" while jumping over the hoards of enemies raining down hell onto him, only for me to shotgun him. Man I love the original shooters, I have since I was younger but could only play the arcade in wolfenstein 2 and I would genuinely try to beat wolf 3d from the Xbox one wolf II lmao, I’m 22 now and this video couldn’t have come at a better time, I switch between playing the recently purchased doom 1+2 and quake 1+2 remakes on ps4, they’re so worth it between replaying through all expansions and the online is so much fun. I’ve beat doom 1 and am on the second to last level of doom 2 on ultra violence mode, I even got doom emulated on my iPhone as well as brutal doom, (modded the mos 1.9 version) and everything works flawlessly, tonight I’ll be putting the same doom 1 and 2 from my phone along with the brutal doom mod to my Retroid 4 pro, then dock it to my tv and plug my keyboard and mouse in when I want to play it on the monitor, and have brutal doom portably anywhere on a red pocket 4 pro handheld that alr kinda has a doom vibe is sick after I beat id software doom and quake games I’ll be moving too duke nukem, then I’m gonna go back and platinum the games.
@@TechDweeb It's a relic of its time with awkward pre-WASD controls but Ultima Underworld is an immersive and engrossing game. A connoisseur such as yourself might enjoy it!

Playing Duke 3D as we speak on my brand spanking new Z Fold 6 through Zeta Touch. My young self playing Duke in the 90's never could've imagined that I'd still be playing it, and on such a badass piece of tech. The controls are actually incredible and with Gyro it really is natural and "snappy". I haven't enjoyed Duke this much in a long time, and I play it every 2 or 3 years pretty much.
You should totally take a look at Shadow Warrior. It was made by the same team as Duke 3D and has an awesome arsenal (you can fire a nuke). It also is really difficult, so play on easier difficulties unless you like a challenge. What really was memorable about the game are the well designed levels, the awesome CD soundtrack, and laughably dated humor. Shadow Warrior is free on Steam or GOG nowadays if you wanna check it out.
Played this game way too much while being way too young for it. This and Shadow Warrior were my jam way back when. However, years later I discovered Blood on the same Build engine, and that one completely stole my heart. Hope it gets a mention sometime; it's hard as hell, but is probably the best Build engine game of yore. Side note: hoping and waiting for more "camping'n'gaming" videos. Those are the ones that've convinced me to get my first retro-handhelds, and those are the ones I find the coziest.
Complaining about politics in video games is so childish. "They live" was a very political and great movie, so is Rambo and many more action movies of the 80's.
The simpler days, when games had no heavy political stuff... like nazis (Wolfenstein 3D), industrial polution (toxic waste in Zombies Ate My Neighbors), or capitalist dystopias or police brutality (Duke Nukem 3D). Good thing Duke didn't have anything like that. 😅
Its one thing to show political topics in varied ways and let you think about it. It's a different thing to preach about a political topic and try and tell the player how he/she should think as if we are incapable of thinking and coming to our own conclusions.
I agree. I usually like all Techdweeb videos but this intro was very much a letdown. Everything is political. To call for apolitical games is to denounce games as an artform. Saying today's gaming landscape is preaching or shoving politics down throats is so stupid. The "cops" in Duke3D are LITERAL PIGS. Its basically ACAB straight from the 90's. But since when people played it they weren't mature enough to understand the satire, now they just think it was apolitical when it was very much not.
@@TechDweeb XD don't feel bad; I kept fruitlessly deleting files from the HDD of my first DOS PC because some programs wouldn't launch with an insufficient memory error...

Yes! Is my answer to the opening questions. So much so, I tried making a game that I would actually like to play. Based on dark action hero franchises like Underworld, Batman, and the like.
I’ve beat doom 1 and am on the second to last level of doom 2 on ultra violence mode, I even got doom emulated on my iPhone as well as brutal doom, (modded the mos 1.9 version) and everything works flawlessly, tonight I’ll be putting the same doom 1 and 2 from my phone along with the brutal doom mod to my Retroid 4 pro, then dock it to my tv and plug my keyboard and mouse in when I want to play it on the monitor, and have brutal doom portably anywhere on a red pocket 4 pro handheld that alr kinda has a doom vibe is sick
after I beat id software doom and quake games I’ll be moving too duke nukem, then I’m gonna go back and platinum the games.
7:33 I'm not sure this is the first game but you could look up and down in Ultima Underworld in 1992
You're right! I never played that one. I'm gonna give it a go. Thanks buddy.
@@TechDweeb It's a relic of its time with awkward pre-WASD controls but Ultima Underworld is an immersive and engrossing game. A connoisseur such as yourself might enjoy it!
Love'd this vid! Thank you!
One the fundamental games of my teenagehood ❤ lovely moments playing it online. Or rather... Trying to connect the 28kbps internet provider to play it online till someone picked off the phone and cut the connection 😂
Beeeeep click Beeeeep BOOOOOOP
This was beautiful
Playing Duke 3D as we speak on my brand spanking new Z Fold 6 through Zeta Touch. My young self playing Duke in the 90's never could've imagined that I'd still be playing it, and on such a badass piece of tech. The controls are actually incredible and with Gyro it really is natural and "snappy". I haven't enjoyed Duke this much in a long time, and I play it every 2 or 3 years pretty much.
still the best game ever. i was 7 years old 😎
You should totally take a look at Shadow Warrior.
It was a pleasure and a walk down memory lane to get killed by you multiple times in dukematch, Techdweeb!
The pleasure was mine 🤓
Played this game way too much while being way too young for it. This and Shadow Warrior were my jam way back when. However, years later I discovered Blood on the same Build engine, and that one completely stole my heart. Hope it gets a mention sometime; it's hard as hell, but is probably the best Build engine game of yore.
Side note: hoping and waiting for more "camping'n'gaming" videos. Those are the ones that've convinced me to get my first retro-handhelds, and those are the ones I find the coziest.
Can't wait for half life to be on the list, I liked duke but hl was "it" for me.
YES!
First for once and probably last lol felt like doing this. I don't feel much cooler but looking forward to video.
🏆
Can you still play this version on PC?
Complaining about politics in video games is so childish.
"They live" was a very political and great movie, so is Rambo and many more action movies of the 80's.
The simpler days, when games had no heavy political stuff... like nazis (Wolfenstein 3D), industrial polution (toxic waste in Zombies Ate My Neighbors), or capitalist dystopias or police brutality (Duke Nukem 3D). Good thing Duke didn't have anything like that. 😅
👎
You're a sad, strange little man, and I pity you.
Its one thing to show political topics in varied ways and let you think about it. It's a different thing to preach about a political topic and try and tell the player how he/she should think as if we are incapable of thinking and coming to our own conclusions.
@@Rafael-uk2ut On a related note, Starship Troopers was just a silly action movie with no deeper meaning. 😇
I ♥ Duke 3D!
sad to think we only ever got ONE first person Duke Nukem game... yes only one.
And we will only have one FOREVER
Pretty sure you could look up in Rise of the Triad before this
New Td viedeo! and duke nukem
I bought 4MB of extra RAM voor my 486 DX4 100Mhz to be able to play this game... :D
Duke Nukem remastered on the evercade is well worth a play
I believe LGR was involved in that
I just played this last month and I loved it.
I upgraded to a Pentium in order to play DN3D. Oh thems were the days. The multiplayer was superb and hasn't been surpassed imo.
I upgraded to 4MB of ram (up from 2MB). Unfortunately it barely helped. Apparently I didn't know what RAM did...
@@TechDweeb XD don't feel bad; I kept fruitlessly deleting files from the HDD of my first DOS PC because some programs wouldn't launch with an insufficient memory error...
Great video as always 🤩🥳
Level design holds up, i think blood was a little better overall but i wish there was a proper sequel. Maybe even in the build engine like ion fury.
Damn i would have been up for some BFG action. guess i better hunt out the discord.
Upgraded from my beloved Amiga to a PC just to play this game
I'm really weary of your use of the word woke there and really hope it's just because of the Duke subject matter. Please don't become another right wing bigoted gaming channel.
I didn't say woke though! When did you hear woke?
@@TechDweeb sorry I must have misheard. I even rewound a couple of times because it didn't seem on brand.
All good. Although you owe me a root beer now.
@@TechDweebwait, you didn't say woke?! Because the sounds coming out of your mouth before the word "political" legitimately sound like "woke". If that's the case, I'll re-subscribe. But that is some wild coincidence.
@@WulfilaBelmont No coincidence @0:05 You can hear the beginning of the word "woke", but it's muted after the "w".
Gunna have download the raze pack for zeta touch now for odin 2 mini pro 😂😂
can't do same all the time or get old but every now and then is good bring it back, Duke rises from the ashes, Albert Wesker is the ugly brother, Duke copy quotes of Ash Williams Army of darkness be more Amazing have powers, movesets, armors and weapons of some of the others male heroes from others franchises without removing chainsaw hand and boomstick

Games are still unapologetically edgy. Have you never played High On Life? It's probably more relevantly edgy the Duke Nukem was in the 90s
Lol people like to cherry pick niche games that are targeted at a specific demographic "Dustborn" and claim all games are being ruined by "politics".... hell MGS is considered one of the greatest series of all time and it full of anti-capitalism politics but i like how these same people ignore stuff like that.

Yes! Is my answer to the opening questions. So much so, I tried making a game that I would actually like to play. Based on dark action hero franchises like Underworld, Batman, and the like. I did it in Skyrim VR so... I guess that's not retro. BUT! It was motivated to bring back the stories and heroes I loved from better times. So... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
For those who played DukeNukem3D and absolutely loved it and want MORE I HIGHLY recommend a game called "Ion Furry"
It's made in the same 3D realms design but in the modern era. It's got a female protagonist, but with the SAME kick butt one liners. It's amazing.
Another great "Boomer Shooter" is Turbo Overkill. Turbo Overkill is more modern and feels much more like an Unreal tournament fast paced shooter but still captures the retro style.
Both games are excellent. CHEERS and Hail to the King 👑
Hail to the king/queen baby
