@@sheilahunter8807 the US was built on liberal democracy. What's wrong with liberals? Liberalism is essentially just republicanism, separation of powers, limited government, and capitalism. It's sort of the standard of almost all successful countries.
I love the difference between the two versions. In the first, she sounds like a love-struck teenager, full of hopeful longing and knowing sadness. But in the second, she's grown up a bit, is moving on past this crush and is sassy!
Yeah, I think this comment pretty much nails it. She cycles through so many different expressions, half-crying, half trapped in her own fantastic thoughts. And she's doing it while singing and dancing! That's amazing.
Never forget my first and one visit to New York and Florida in april 1963. My cousin invited my to Radio City Music Hall and, to see "Bie, bye Birdie". So huge screen, so beautiful Ann-Margret and I, only 20 years old!.....
I graduated high school in 1963 and saw this movie at a drive-in theater with a bunch of friends. We wanted to see one of our classmates dance with Ann Margaret. He was in the group dance scene with her!!
the reason why she sounds bad in the first half is because she was immature with an unhealthy obsession with a star. her singing voice is supposed to reflect that. in the 2nd half (the end of the movie), she realizes her actual boyfriend is what's most important to her and that she wasted her time fangirling over some jerk singer who could care less about her. she matured more, and so did her singing.
TheGenghisKhunt You're right, it should be "couldn't care less". But I always say "I could care less" when using the phrase although I always add "I just don't know how" :)
Thanks Kathy Lopez for clearing that up. Because of your comment I listened to the whole video and yes she sounds much better and more "Broadway" in the second half. Even her makeup is more mature. I'm so glad because all I saw on Mad Men was the first half and I couldn't figure out how Ann Margret could have possibly gotten work in musicals when her voice sounded so godawful. Lol the reason why she sings like this in the first half is because it symbolizes that her character in the movie (Kim McAfee) was immature. Because throughout the movie as a fifteen year old, she blows off her boyfriend Hugo for Conrad Birdie's attention, and looses her mind whenever he's around, fan girling over him. Picture a five year old fussing because she doesn't get a doll that she wants. Ann Margret is a fifteen year old crying over the man she wants and can't have, who by the way, has been drafted into the army. Her voice sounds a bit more mature in the second part because she has realized that Birdie isn't all that, and Hugo matters more. She has matured, and therefore is kindly yet sadly wishing him farewell, no longer "boo-hooing" over him.
Cerulean blue and chromium yellow is like the color theme of the whole show. Dig it in the lighting of "Hymn on a Sunday Evening," Doris' dress just prior, and Rosie's dress for her wild night out at Maude's Madcap.
The contrast between the beginning and the end, the differences in her hair and the way she holds herself and even the way she sings and moves around stage makes you wonder what happened during the episode. Subtle good work.
I love the evolution of Kim Macafee in both clips. The first one is so awesome because it's a girl who just wants her idol. At the end, she's a woman with no time for childish things. I hope to see the play some time!
I used to be obsessed with this movie as a child. I would watch this over and over for hours… this brings back so much nostalgia and just a reminder of my love for theater and musicals ❤
To set the record straight, Ann-Margret had just turned 22 when this was released, so she was 21 when it was filmed. She's playing a high school girl (hence the high voice), so no more than three or four years younger than she really was. She looks older to us because of the old-fashioned styles, and because teenage girls back then tried to look like grown-ups (as opposed to today, when grown-ups try to look like teenagers).
She has an amazing voice, it takes great skill to purposely sing this bad but despite that, I can't stop watching it...great performance full of subtleties. Even Ann Margret now is still looking good and as talented as ever.
You are so correct. I was in high school and saw it on the big screen. When she came on with that blue background, the young guys in the theater actually had their jaws drop. She was that beautiful.

My gosh this lady is absolutely mesmerizing to watch! I LOVE how her voice represents her immaturity at the beginning, and how it sounds much more mature and controlled by the end; she had such a unique sound and was capable of being versatile with her voice as well. I also respect her for being willing to sing that intro in a way that would make many people assume that she has a bad/annoying voice right off the bat. But she knew the truth, she knew she could do much more with her voice, and she wasn’t about to let the fear of other people’s first impression of her singing stop her from performing her pretty little heart out anyway. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have done it at all. I don’t think these clips would’ve been as intriguing to watch if they had been perfectly polished. I’m a professional singer as well, so I really appreciate and respect her artistry in these clips. I love reading the comments on here of those who also picked up on the clever directing of the intro singing vs. the singing at the end. Kudos❤️👍🏻🎶👏🏻

Such a memorable number! First time I saw this movie was at the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City, and in an amazing coincidence, the last time I saw Ann-Margret was last week in the new Hallmark Christmas movie titled Christmas Spectacular about the Rockettes.
For some reason, the vibe this song gives off really characterizes so much of what Mad Men was about. Ever since I watched that episode, I can't really think about the nostalgia Mad Men gives me without first thinking about this.
As I remember this opening for the film was an afterthought and shot after everything also was done. A stoke of genius because audiences went wild over her and it. She is on a treadmill!
Chris Larimore You think so? I think she's rather average. I suppose a woman who finds another woman average may be beautiful to man. I think that's quite interesting.
The "d" pronunciation would have been awkward since she was stretching out the name Birdie. Her singing is also purposefully screech-like in the furst oart.
***** wouldn't be awkward at all. This is perhaps the worst and most annoying pronunciation of the word ''birdie'' i have EVER seen. Hope she breaks a leg for this disgraceful performance of a song.

Well, when I heard it coming from the other room, I thought it was an episode of "Little Rascals" and that maybe Spanky is singing, or Alfalfa on a good day. Never occured to me that this was a grown adult. She manages to be off-key on almost every note ... is she trying to pretend that she's sobbing while she's singing?
tremendous and remarkable performance. propably its not the singing performance... but her attitude towards the camera and the eccentric dance style... i don't know, quite attractive.

When my school did this musical last year, we sang the beginning part after our curtain call. We got the audience to start clapping and all of the seniors stood in the front to sing. We were all dancing around and having a great time. It was one of the best experiences ever.
RubalCava I think the main thing is that her hair is different in the first part, in the second part it's sort of done up in a standard 1950's style while in the first part it's more natural.

This always makes me feel bad for Sal’s wife.
Haha, the look on her face when he performed that for her in their bedroom. I think that's when she knew.
Thank you Sterling Cooper for introducing endless audiences to this classic
That is one of my favorite movies❣All-star cast!!
Most have no idea what it was like to be a 13 year old boy in 1963 and see this on the Big Screen . God Bless Ann Margret . :)
Vendo esse vídeo em 2023. Eu vejo várias vezes seguidas só para ver as muitas expressões que Ann Margret consegue fazer em tão pouco tempo.
Ann is just so beautiful; it was a brainstorm to she how she grows up in attitude from beginning of the movie & song, to her ending song. So cute.
Good Lord she is so so gorgeous
Chris Larimore
You think so? I think she's rather average. I suppose a woman who finds another woman average may be beautiful to man. I think that's quite interesting.
Izabel Mendosa I think she's gorgeous but I think most of that is her charm. Personality makes a look for me 👌
C R
That's true
Izabel Mendosa average?? You need glasses man
Yes she is and it’s a combo of being the perfect mix of adorable and sexy. Her personality was just so playful and it’s shows so well in this video
"It's not Ann-Margret."
Hate Roger.
it definitley is
@@patcocking4051 it's a quote from Mad men
The combination of colors on the scene is the most brilliant thing I've ever seen in Photography.
I remember watching this on the ABC's 4:30 movie and thinking, I wish I could rewind this part over and over. She was mesmerizing . What a talent.
Her singing isn't goo. Also why does it sound like shes saying burhee. whats with that d pronunciation?
The "d" pronunciation would have been awkward since she was stretching out the name Birdie. Her singing is also purposefully screech-like in the furst oart.
***** wouldn't be awkward at all. This is perhaps the worst and most annoying pronunciation of the word ''birdie'' i have EVER seen. Hope she breaks a leg for this disgraceful performance of a song.
Sorry to reply to your comment, but obviously you never left Kansas. Its a Brooklyn is better than LA sort of language without the bad ass punks with guns movie. How about Texas, what do you think of the way they talk troll? Or how about New England. Or Georgia? You and your 17 friends should start your own town caused JonesTown, home of the bigotry trolls. Lying Bigot Trolls, Sorry for your answer. Go ask any doctor, you gonna get the same opinion, trolls. Sorry I meant to type Called but I type caused, cause that's how I type fast as I speak. Please except my apology for you being all being bigots. Stupid ones to, and not ashamed to ask stupid questions. Thank you.
Make sure you get your teachers in here to tell me all about it, living on the streets.
I can't belive how much charisma she has.
Had
Jerky and weird performance
There's something about this that keeps me listening to this, she got some sort of charm
her movements voice and acting in the first half is so incredibly addicting
I love Ann Margret, and don't think this song is a very fair one to judge her singing abilities on.. She's actually very talented and beautiful.
tremendous and remarkable performance. propably its not the singing performance... but her attitude towards the camera and the eccentric dance style... i don't know, quite attractive.
I gained a new respect for Ann-Margret after watching Bye Bye Birdie.
She's a great dancer and performer.
プレスリーとラスベガス万歳で共演した時は、本当に綺麗な女優さんでした!!!✌️🧒
DON DRAPER sent me here
She is gorgeous. I've watched this a half dozen times. Don Draper brought me here.
I love this sooooo much she so talented and beatiful
You know it so amazing that this scene really inspired John Romita Sr. To create Spider-Man’s most iconic love interest, Mary Jane Watson
I remember very faintly hearing this song when i was younger my grandmother used to put this on for me so i had to look it up because it was so catchy got very nostalgic feeling from it wish i can go back in time
She's stunning!!!!😍
Hello 👋🏻 nice to meet you Michelle, hope you’re safe and well?
And with this opening, a star was born! Just like Garland's "Over the Rainbow...same deal
I'VE HAD THIS SONG STUCK IN MY HEAD ALL WEEK.
I m texting from psychiatric department.
The way she sings the second Caaareeee is amazing!! At 1:09!!!!
Yeah it is, over the years I've learned how to do that ❤️
idk, why would this be amazing? sounds pretty easy tbh
Astro Faultier It's a range of high notes, I'm an alto (I sing low)
She still sounds annoying as hell.
Tycho Brahe Not to me, in my opinion
1:30 I have no idea whats she doing with her arms...
haha that made me laugh. You're right! I think she had a brief seizure!
Squeezing ;)
Lol!!! I watched this in choir class and that made me crack up!
her dress?
Lol I think it's making an expression of her frustration.
The official title track of #Twitter's demise.
Maddy Perennity hahaha!!!
Somebody make it happen. I hate Twitter and hope another site murders it like a Myspace drive-by.
👌👌👌
Omg you totally called it
Damn perfect
Ann-Margret is so amazing!
Her face expressions are priceless
When my school did this musical last year, we sang the beginning part after our curtain call. We got the audience to start clapping and all of the seniors stood in the front to sing. We were all dancing around and having a great time. It was one of the best experiences ever.
Literally no one gives a shit
I actually like the first part better.
same
Overactivedreamer that's cause you're still a kid
She seems older in the second part than in the first. It is like distinct impressions of femininity maybe.
RubalCava I think the main thing is that her hair is different in the first part, in the second part it's sort of done up in a standard 1950's style while in the first part it's more natural.
I’ve preferred the second part
