its nice to see a good video on an all time favorite game series of mine. the first game on PS1 is not only the 2nd PS1 game i ever played (first is crash bandicoot 2) but also part of the reason why i love checking out these odd ball games that not many people talk about. i love every single 1 for different reasons and i remember back in the day on youtube it was so hard to find people who even knew about these games. awesome job
Things I like about the Deception/Kagero series I love the traps, the environment, the music (from certain series) and to be able to pull combos with or with out the room traps. I love that not all traps work on certain characters or archetypes. And you actually have to strategize for each class. I love I have the option to not kill certain Enemies, and just let them go. I love that they voiced even the NPCs in the later games like Trapt and Deception IV Blood Ties. I like there is a design your own NPC in Deception IV: The Nightmare Princess, to create a challenge or even put the names of your hated people. I love some of the character designs for the protagonist and certain enemies. I love the Armor Break option added in Blood Ties... for reasons. I love the capture one also in Blood Ties. I love the "Dark Illusions" in Trapt, it's a cinematic traps, but wish it has the option of skipping if possible. Things I hate about it. I hate killing kids, in Deception 2 is an option. I hope there are more race and creatures to deal with other than humans. Like Deception 1 and 2 used to have. I pretty sure there was some cyborgs and robots, as well as timenoids there too. It can get repetitive if you don't start actually use everything in the room, and just repeat the same traps. I don't like killing good guys, and I'm glad you can spare them in Trapt and Deception 2. But you have to for completing the compendium (list) of enemies. Clearly I both love and hate the short background stories for each Invaders, and hate killing the actual nice ones in group, because it's makes me guilty. I hate and sort of like the dark endings, but I prefer the good endings more, like Deception 1 (best ending), Deception 2 leave with your brother ending,
Well deception 3 was my favorite, one one the enemies in that game that caused me ptsd was the hellknight, the first time I played it, didn't know what I was about to suffer, when he teleported, is what that "oh shit" moment, besides that, love the game, years later when I played it again, easy mode, funny that you didn't mentioned them. Love the vid!
@@TheKHC true, only my first encounter with them I found them terrifying, afterwards I just have a peculiar combo for them, I've yet to play the kagero deception 2. I like how the shogun look, I hope they add some type of challenge mode with those type of enemies!

Just finished Kager Deception II on my channel. And I must say, I still prefer it over the rest. I played them all. and Millenia was the best character and best world with story to me.

That she does not even believe what she is doing her attackers is wrong or "bad" and expect that every one coming after her will treat her nicely like Yokal does cuz that's all she knew of the outside world being captive inside the castle. Sad.
I randomly played Trapt in 2008, that was such a great era in gaming. I had so much fun and was anticipating the follow up game. But sadly the last releases went for fan service (I think, I didn't get the references they were trying to pull). So Trapt is the only game I hold with high regard. I think the series is dead at this point, but I am hoping for an indie revival someday
Honestly, I'm kinda hopeful. Tecmo's been rereleasing the Project Zero games (albeit they started with the two worst ones lmao) so it wouldn't shock me if we ever end up seeing a Kagero collection some day

I am surprised when talking about rooms in Trapt you didn't bring up them unlocking Dark Illusions, some of the coolest looking things in the franchise.
I like the dark illusions but I didnt think to mention them as they're ultimately not different enough from regular non player traps to be considered something special imo. They re cool but that's about it
I've been playing Deception games since the very beginning. They've been amazing and disappointing at the same time, but we can absolutely say they've never been boring or duplicated. Tecmo has the market cornered when it comes to weird demonic trap game thingys. Congrats. Deception 3 was definitely the best in the series. While the art style unabashedly ripped off Vagrant Story, I can't say I had a problem with that. It truly was dark and gothic in a way the other games just never nailed. Also, she was exactly what the protagonist should be: reluctant. You can turn into a total monster, or attempt redemption. That's such a good character arc for these types of games. I have Deception 4 Blood Ties, but couldn't understand why I hated it so much until you explained it. The anime-ness of it is not subtle and is both abhorrent and repulsive. A really bad take for the series. We're probably not getting another Deception or Fatal Frame game any time soon, and while there's rumors of a new Dead Or Alive game, I won't hold my breath. It's cool that Tecmo games have crossover elements, like costumes, but that's probably all we'll ever get. Helena in Dead Or Alive in the Deception 3 costume is perfect, and I'm glad it exists. Speaking of waifu, man, this is how many videos with a Shanoa reference? I mean, dude, not subtle. I'd ask for a Order Of Ecclesia review, but it would probably just get way more erotic than I want to hear. At least you have good taste. This was a quality and entertaining retrospective. You have a really great review technique where you have plenty of facts and research, but you inject enough of your own rage and profanity that it's definitely not just you reading a script into a microphone. This puts you miles above so many of the other critics that I listen to. Your passion, love, and burning hatred of games comes through in everything you do. @@TheKHC I've probably beaten Symphony of the Night a hundred times. I even bought the Japanese version and beat that one a dozen times. I bought all three DS ones for my kids and they love them as well. It's a shame the entire franchise is nothing more than pachinko machines now.

I found a copy of the first game at a Bazzar which is a church run charity shop and i figured that it seemed different than the normal games i see for ps1 and tought i give it a try after a try i quit cause i could not understand but now with all this revelation i want to try it again as my big issue as i never understood the mechanics of the first game now i do.
I imagine most people like me know this series through Fatal Frame, as the team used their experiences in creating elaborate mansions and creepy setting for a horror series. I can see shades of comparison with games of both series that came out around the same time. Especially when looking at the cringeworthy plots of Fatal Frame V and Deception IV, as both feel like they were written by edgey Japanese teens. Those are not the only reason both games are the low point of their respective series, but are probably what people remember most.
Great review of the series! I played Kagero and Trapt back in the day and just started playing the very first game of the series two days ago. I kinda want to play Nightmare Princess but the high price and the excess of anime tropes push me away. I really hope it can go on sale.

@@TheKHC oh yea understandable, i wouldn't recommend them cause the difficulty spike is honestly fucked and there is not much interesting abt them aside from the rpg element tecmo introduced to a soccer game which i thought is an interesting idea and being cutscene heavy, that aspect for some games in the series being nes is pretty impressive (similiar to og ninja gaiden) i only play some of them on a yearly basis cause they are a guilty pleasure of mine (cause the anime was very popular as a kid and im sick in the head)

Kagero is solid, and barring some qol improvements present in 3 honestly not too dissimilar

I don't actually find Shanoa attractive lmao. Castlevania just so happens to be my favorite franchise. My favorite protagonist is actually Richter lol
