The Utawarerumono Series Retrospective - A Roller Coaster of Quality

Because whether I like these games or not there has got to be one reason or another I keep thinking about it. Today I'll find out what exa...

The Famicom Detective Club series is easily one of the most underappreciated Adventure games in the english speaking world and that's a damned shame. Games like Hotel Dusk, Ace Attorney and more owe its existence in part to FDC. But how are the games themselves? Since FDC4 is coming out next week I thought, might as well answer that question. Huh, the chapters of this video are in the same order as the cantos, that means the next canto should be around hong lu
Yep. Sure is. The canto's are in the order of the introductions in the prologue, with gregor as the first and faust as the last
@TheKHC i haven't noticed that detail
Well it's really 10% crime and 90% punishment. A big theme of Dostoevsky in general is the idea that internal struggle and repentance is a more profound (and self inflicted) punishment than anything worldly. Raskolnikov does after all physically struggle from his internal regret. Early on in the Brothers Karamazov there's a dialogue on whether the church should have judicial and executive authority, and the monastery elder effectively argues that a man's inner turmoil and sincere rue for their actions is punishment enough and that the church's role should rather be in reserving for the criminal a place of acceptance in spite of his actions, if he repent sincerely.
Maybe it was just the version I read but for one reason or another I was just never really able to resonate with this book
It ended up no. 5 on my list, while on the other hand I really didn't like Demian... less than the Wings even, and yes I did read it in the original, the Cain cult with actual supernatural powers towards the end just really ruined everything I liked about the first half ngl. Different tastes ofc, and a big part of how you end up liking a book is just the mindset with which you approach it.

what do you think of the shin stage plays? im a shin game hater but I love their stage shows, they improve a lot of aspects that i hated and the cast are a lot more lovable here than in the game which makes up for the bad narrative. they're also the last thing to come out of sakura wars with the last show being in spring 2022 after kakumei was shut down
Never watched them cause I couldn't find full recordings anywhere so I just gave up. It's why I didn't include em in the video. I'm sure they're fine though, cause the actresses themselves are very talented. Not their fault they're given trash to work with

What did I just watch? I'm not sure if I'm more confused by the titles or embarrassed by Joe Biden. Or am I embarrassed for Joe Biden? What accent was that for the Space Marine 2 part? Man, what a terrible year. I'm going to need some time to process this and make sure no one put anything in my food that would make me hallucinate. Happy Halloween? 🎃 Or is it Geheimnisnacht? That's what they celebrate in Warhammer.
I have never played warhammer in my entire life
@@TheKHCYou should give it a try. There's lots of different types of games to choose from. Mechanicus is my favorite currently, and it's getting a sequel. Chaos Gate: Demon Hunters is good too. If you like fantasy, Mordheïm is great and the Total War games are phenomenal.
@@100Servings I'm not big into Fantasy and 40k just seems like too much for me
@TheKHC I refuse to play anything with Akira Toriyama artwork. Dragon Ball is okay, but in anything else his characters are just creepy bobbleheads. Blue Dragon made me want to vomit.

Honestly as one of the people who enjoy the series’s slice of life and humor…yeah Mask of Truth is the best game in the series and many other fans of the series seem to agree on that. As for that scene in particular…pretty damn good and the anime adopted that perfectly. I’ll admit I do have some grips on the series, you’ve made the biggest with the NPC’s on Monochrome Moebius. But overall I do love the pacing of the series. Might be a bit chaotic but kinds of fit. Admittedly can be a little much in the second game. But over all I love the main characters and how their interactions bounce off one another most of the time. And this world their in, love coming back to see more and more of it personally. Do wish to know more about Loat Flag’s story, can’t read the Japanese writing system to save my life but I do know some of that has began to bleed into Monochrome Moebius. Anyway just happy to see more people talking about these games.
I didn't go into LF's story much because its very fanservicey, but it does have some cool moments. For instance, Haku taking over as the Emperor and marrying Rulutieh
This...visually looks like the most fanservicy thing but i heard tales that the series writing is pretty good, i might give it a shot, and hey i dont mind fanservice myself but i can see it being a detriment if its too overexagerated Off context but wanted to ask if you gonna give Metaphor a shot, if yes are you gonna do a community tab review in it
Played the demo and it's like every other Atlus devdloped rpg. Derivative, uninspired swivel for people who dont actually likr rpgs. Not interested
@@TheKHCunderstandable, i plan on playing it sometime in the future still just to give it a chance hoping that the narrative is at least good but yea, unfortunate it wasn't to your liking
I'd say play the demo first and see how you like that because everything I've seen and have been told tells me it's a very very good estimate of the full game
One of these days I would love to understand the thought process that you go through when you choose games. I think you're more focused on selecting a game based on story more than anything, but you tend to play through games even if the story is unsatisfying or boring. My time is so limited, I only play stuff based on gameplay, and more and more find myself skipping the story entirely. I got about two sentences into Dark Deity before I just started skipping it all to just do the battles. This looks good based on the gameplay, but the fact that it's so story driven makes it a big no for me. I still think you might like Mechanicus. The story mainly revolves around various factions of a cyborg priesthood from Mars. Upon discovering that a planet is the tomb of an ancient race of aliens in mechanical bodies with ridiculously advanced technology, the question becomes if they should raid the tomb to incorporate their advanced xenotech, or exterminate them all for being the threat to the galaxy that they are. Every battle you're involved in wakes up more of the Necrons, and if the awakening meter hits 100%, you're forced into the final battle of the game, regardless of how prepared you are. It's on PC and Switch and there's a sequel coming out, and it's in an abundance of languages, having been developed in France. It also has a soundtrack of what I can only describe as gothic pipe organ techno. Glad to hear you got your Internet fixed.
I just play whatever looks even remotely interesting to me and make vids on whatever I currently feel like lol
@@TheKHC "Chaotic Neutral". Got it. I do like that you make me aware of games I would never give the time of day, and you review entire franchises. We do like a lot of the same games as well, like the Deception series. It will never cease to amuse me that characters in the Dead Or Alive fighting games got costumes from Deception games. Helena got Reina's outfit, while Ayane got Millennia's. Now if only Tecmo made anything good anymore, that would be great.
Idk Nioh 2 is one of the greatest action games of all time if you ask me
@@TheKHC Haven't played it, but I do have Stranger of Paradise on my wishlist, and it's made by the same team.
@100Servings also a great game
I want to ask is the eng dub good, there are undub versions online so im just asking if the dub is bad or something before diving into the series
For xenogears the dub is terrible; I talk about the dubs for saga and blade in detail here in the vid but the TLDW is; Saga 1 dub is whatever, 2 dub is atrocious, 3 dub is great 2 completely changed the main casts VA's though but then brought back most of 1's VAs for 3 so its very jarring The blade dubs are all very good
@@TheKHCfair enough, i will go for the dubs except for 2, thanks a lot man 👍
No worries, yw
I think you could have at least said more about the Warriors clone, at least from a gameplay standpoint. I can’t say it looked anything outright special or unique on it’s own, and hell I’m not sure if it looks anything interesting, but still feel like you could have put more effort into it. For some reason this is one of those games I got for some reason, but I can’t say looking at more has interested me more, the gameplay seems kinda fun from what you’ve shown, but everything else about utawarerumono while “nice looking” doesn’t particularly stand out or particularly grab my interest that much. That RPG thing looks like an UE4 asset trip more than a legit game in the series.
To be fair, it isn't really a Warriors clone. It was developed by Tamsoft and it shows, plays near identical to Senran Kagura.
No kidding. Well Knowing tamsoft I think I know what to expect from them quality wise and would explain some things.
I'm not too familiar with senran kagura past the surface level stuff but the reason I didn't go into detail for Zan is because it was legitimately just really really boring and I really didnt know what to say about it
I got my internet fixed 👍
Idea factory is great games favorite. Not late and not devil. Hyperdimension neptunia my favorite games.
"Peak gameplay" Every boss would be better with 50% of the hp they have
No. Every enemy. Period
@@TheKHC That too,in general having everyone being a damage sponge that 2-shots you at the slightiest mistake is wild. Also this game has a lot of stretched out segments filled to the brim with enemies. The chapter where you go into the dungeon of the Serpent God following someone who is letting you notes gets infuriating because how chopped the pacing is by having 3 rooms full of enemies before every small portion of the story there. Also you did not mentioned the puzzles here, that was for me the most unreasonable part of the whole game,no way someone tought that the puzzles of Elysium were a good idea
I'm gonna be honest I didn't mention the puzzles cause i really didn't mind them. They were pretty simple if you ask me, but also I'm really into puzzles so I'm not a good judge here
These videos are purely my opinion and mine alone. I've stated in this very video that I went in knowing absolutely nothing sbout the game and that I played it only after being recommended it randomly on steam. I appreciate proper criticism so if you have any I'd love to hear it, but just hurling insults at me and claiming I am biased and contrarian (over a game I went in with no expectations whatsoever) isn't going to help me make future videos better. If you didn't watch the video (I'm really sorry if this seems like an assumption, but I've genuinely had people who didnt watch the video just insult me and tell me I suck because I personally didn't much like the game) then I'd urge you to please do so and actually give me criticism. As for the action rpg stuff, that's simply not true. Some of my favourite series and games are Action RPGs of varying difficulties (Tales of, Star Ocean, .hack//, Kingdom Hearts 2 very specifically, Phantasy Star Online and the older Ys games, particularly Oath in Felghena) to name a few. I always try to go in with an open mind and mention everything I like and dislike out of any game I review. I never ever try to make videos on games I have an inherent bias towards because that just wouldn't be fair to the viewer. If you felt that in any point I was being unfair towards the game then please let me know which areas and I'll gladly clarify if I didn't already in the video.
@@SyrekRayn Nah,they aren't threathening, they are boringly unfair. The bosses usually have 3 pretty easy attacks that you have learned to dodge 2 minutes into the fight, and it's just a stretch of 25 minutes of them using these attacks over and over, and if you do a mistake 12 minutes in the punishment is usually the boss comboing and killing you in 2 hits.Especially the Fire God that you can't even touch most of the time and it's just waiting until an opening after it does its incredible unthreatheing attacks for the 50th time. These bosses don't have the moveset variety to sustain the enjoyment of a fight for it's extremely long duration.

I uploaded this video before my wires broke down. Decided to make it public early as a hold over
Thank you? Maybe? I think?
Was it funny? I thought it was funny lol.
@@TheKHC It was funny. You all just seem to torment each other. I kind of miss that from the military.
I like how you can progressively tell I'm becoming more tired and losing my grip on reality as the video goes on
@@100Servings Torment implies we're not enjoying it
I had no idea what II was about as a kid, but it used to terrify me lmao
Ooooh round and round we go, holding onto paaain driven by our egos
I have a weird allergy on the heavy visual novel element. Is this series really worth trying? I mean, I dont wanna miss a good series.
It's more visual novel than adventure game but still does enough Adv things to be one properly. Other than these two there's; The first AA game is fantastic and 3 is great. 2 is awful but the last episode is fantastic (and every modern rerelease lets you just skip right to it). Apollo Justice, Dual Destinies and Spirit Of Justice are all bad. The Great Ace Attorney duology is the height of the series and totally standalone as well as some of the best ADV games in recent years There's also Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright but that's more of a Layton game than an AA
I've never played any of these games.
Understandable
Great video To this day the worst thing AAI1 has in my opinion is that everytime i try to recoment this spin off series to someone, i remember it exists and they need to play it to experience the good stuff....aside from this, im bummed you didnt like AA4 , its understandable as the writing and pacing doesnt serve apollo justice (no pun intended) but i think the music in that game is pretty unique at the very least which made me consider it a guilty pleasure of sorts I need to check the great ace attorney games after this
Apollo is a game I get more miffed on every time I think about it because barring the visuals and music it has absolutely nothing going for it
@@TheKHC i Agree with ya, and while i dont think the following is a main contributor to the lower writing quality, i also feel like the period where AA4 came out also suffered from the "pass the torch" syndrome, where coincidentally a lot of capcom would introduce a new protag for the new generation but simultaneously get overshadowed by the old ones in the game, DMC4's Nero, AA4's Apollo and Sf4's Abel are examples of that
@Kardz6 the funniest part about that is that phoenix wasnt gonna be in aa4 and then inafune demanded he would be
hello khc, your video is very fast paced have a nice day
Raiden you know I don't like slow videos that waste your time
@@TheKHC well, don't have a nice day then fuck you
Just beat it and damn I really hope they continue this series
I was kind of bummed out about the whole Emio thing, but this was a series that I was interested in. So I found out the grandfather of Metroid did this and it’s the first M rated Nintendo, I took the chance. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a detective. Loved every minute of the game and I tried the other 2 games. Fantastic series and recommend anyone to try it
Glad you enjoyed it
You know calling him "that guy" makes no sense if this doesn't have Voice Acting! With Voice Acting in a game where you get to name your MC they have to have ways to avoid the actors having to say the MC name! So they do give them a nickname or codeword! Hell SMT4A had the main character called Nanashi even if you give him a different name and it's suppose to be something he was called for a good long time for his childhood friend Asahi and her father who is his guardian to call him! It's Japanese for No Name (cute) but at least it's a FUCKING LEGIT NAME! "That Guy" feels pretty fucking This issue reminds me of my GRIPE with the name thing in Fire Emblem Engage where there was NO REASON to not give the main character Alear their default name! Leave all that name making shit for File and Profiling and no longer "naming" a character! People are going to call the character from that point onward by the name you the makers give them, so what's the point of naming them AFTER THE FACT! Best part is as you say "The Boy" in this game has their own character! That's the same with ALEAR, which just shows the whole "player Avatar" thing isn't working out anymore when script writing and it's likely best to let it disappear into the Ether! People want their character to feel APART of the world! Look at Dead Space Remake! For all it's issues! Letting Isaac interact with the world and NOT BE SILENT was the best thing they could do! Especially taking into mind they changed their minds about him being silent come Dead Space 2, meaning the Isaac for DSR had to NOT be how he is in DS2, basically the NATRUAL progression INTO that character by DS2! Sort of like how idiots who see Aliens first before Alien wonder why Ripley isn't Gung-Ho and such while forgetting this is a "Space Trucker/Engineer" who's at the end of a LONG day job and just wants to get home to her daughter and enjoy the huge PAY DAY waiting. Her character in Aliens is a PROGRESSION of her experiences in Alien! Sorry for the Rant, but when you brought it up, I was resonating with you that I really can't get into SILENT protagonists anymore! Dragon's Dogma makes it worse when they force ROMANCE when your character is "a plank of FUCKING WOOD" so romance makes no sense that it might as well not be in it (And they did it AGAIN in Dragon's Dogma 2! Seriously STOP IT if your not going to give my character FUCKING CHARACTER! Moments like the relationship with the Dragon and such I can get behind because you don't need to show too much, but then again I should be able to TALK and interact so the issue is still there! But the age of the Silent Protagonist is over! They work for games with a LOW cast where you're DARK SOUL-ing this shit! But even then SOME interactions would be a good idea
Looking at this game something tells me this might have been the original designs for fire emblem Path of Radiance before Nintendo and intelligent systems had some common sense and decided to wait for the GameCube before releasing Path of Radiance instead of the N64 like they originally planned game didn't sell well but good God is it remembered better aside from the Bad English voice dub because of that good decision even the 3D models for the GameCube are leagues better than what the f*** this game was using😂
N64 was much more powerful in regards to 3D visuals than the sega saturn. the models wouldve looked closer to something like hybrid heaven than this. Alternatively Ogre Battle 64 is very good looking for an N64 SRPG
@@TheKHC That I agree with (Still have a working WiiU so I frequently replay Ogre Battle 64 ALOT, well that's lesson now that I have "I can't believe it's not Ogre Battle" that is Unicorn Overlord, but you get the jist). So I should take that back that a Possible "N64 Path of Radiance" would have looked ANYTHING CLOSE to this horrid mess (And I've SEEN some of the 3D games on the Saturn, having played a few of them, the BIGGEST one being SHINING FORCE FUCKING 3 which might as well have been Sega's ANSWER to Path of Radiance LONG before POR was a concept like they saw the future! So this is a REAL disgrace on Atlus part! No wonder it too till the bloody DS before they came back to Majin Tensei concepts in Devil Survivor) Even the EARLY 3D RPG of the Sega saturn had more effort and were better then this, whoever compared THIS to those when giving the green light better have had a NASTY period of bringing Coffee to everyone in the office for how well this ended!
