I find it interesting that the idea is that the overqueen gives each bug the perfect job - and the overqueen gave Bug the only job that would allow him to become a starship ranger. If he wasn't an egg planter, he wouldn't have met February at all.
So the overqueen DID give him the right job.

but how many Bugs passed through this life before this one, not getting the opportunity, and passing away without the overqueen's slightest notice? Perhaps Bug was the one lucky recipient of circumstance, and only in retrospect you assume some benevolence to the director of this hive? Perhaps you see power, absolute, uncontested, and try to force benevolence upon it, so as to rationalize its power and make right the injustice?

I really like how Joey and Lauren really emote with the puppet, they don't just let the puppet do all the work. When the character is sad, they use their whole body to make it really seem like they're sad. That's called good acting

also i love that because so much of the budget went into puppets the slime is just hot glue on sunglasses and silly string and fake cobwebs it's very good

Rebecca Koenig They're all so well written, and they all have a different feel. It's almost impossible to pick a favorite one, they have a song for literally every feeling and situation.
Rebecca Koenig There are some Starkid songs I'm not as fond of (mainly Hideous Creatures), but I don't think there's ever been a truly bad Starkid song.
The only starkid song I hate is Guys Like Potter (as someone who ships Jily with a passion)

I love that from February's perspective, she's totally cool with the fact that this Starship Ranger dude who she's never met is saying things like "you're the most beautiful thing I've ever seen" and "You're what I've been waiting for", and "Take me away!", like, isn't he supposed to be on a rescue mission to save her? She doesn't care, she is IMMEDIATELY down with whatever Bug's got going on and that's why I love her.

Man, Joey is DAMN good. I love what they did with the puppets, how you can still see the people facial expressions, but the character is portrayed effectively.

I THINK I'M FALLING IN LOVE... WITH JOEY RICHTER
Here watching for millionth time and even after all these times this is still my favorite song from the show. The piano, the composition, the haunting melody, the thoughtful lyrics, Joey's warm voice driving the accompaniment... it so completely encapsulates an existential moment. I still get goosebumps 3:14 - 3:20, his vibrato is so clear and beautiful. I still can't help but be so proud of Starkid.

Joey is such a good actor that he can't just say the lines and mooves the bug's mouth. His face shows us the real feelings that the bug is feeling. Omg, I love you Joey Richter

uhhhhh holy shit maybe this just me but 'life' beats every other song in this musical no contest. might just be me projecting but it feels so much more powerful today than when I first watched it, because the horror of the world is so much closer now. it's such a good metaphor for the trans experience as well - we have no choice in what we are given, who are they to say what i am, i feel this song so much deeper now
I love Joey. "She thinks I'm a starship ranger." The LOOK on his face - and then you can see the emotion growing in his eyes. That is amazing acting.

I have to laugh when I think about how I found this. I'd been looking for some random kiddy show to watch for no reason, and stumbled across Starship. Couldn't find a good link to watch it though, so I ended up looking on youtube to see if I could find it. Instead...I found this, and then their other plays. (Holy B@man Musical is my favourite). And ya know.....I still haven't seen the real Starship movie.XD

Tarezzful I repeat, I "wasn't able to watch it"? All I saw was the summary and the "cover", which was very obviously drawn in child-movie-animation style. I never went back to it or paid attention to who made it when I was there. Exactly how was I supposed to have any sort of an idea it and this were one and the same?
Couple of years late to this, but this does have lots of references to the movie "Starship Troopers" in addition to a few others (many other comments list them) so there is a movie in a way ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I used to think, when I first watched this play, that Bug falls in love with February because she's human. I now see I was wrong. She's hope. She is the one who listened to that cry for help. She freaking saved his life, in a way. And she loves him. she ignores the fact that he's an alien bug because she can see he's "so much more than status quo". And that's all Bug needed.
