Song Link: • Fearless
David Gilmour is my favorite guitarist, and Pink Floyd are masters of dynamics within their music.
The singing crowd at the end are 40,000 Kopites (Liverpool FC supporters). They sing "You'll Never Walk Alone" at all their games. You should listen to King Buffalo "Morning Song". You'll immediately recognise where they got the inspiration for their song. Not from the Kop, from Floyd.
@@thesedreamsarefree I think you are right, but catching them on the recording was unintentional.
Astute analysis on the guitar and bass arrangement. If I could only take five PF tracks to my desert island, this would be one of them.
and the other 4 are........?
@@andreascala2663 Echoes, Dogs, Comfortably Numb, & Shine On, you Crazy Diamond
@@chrislegner4816 you have to take a syd's one mate
One of my favorites from Pink Floyd. This has such a cool and mellow vibe. I never get tired of this song !
Floyd and Liverpool fc pure Magic .YNWA
One of my favourite Pink Floyd songs! Its subdued quiet is what gives it its power.
Fearless at last. This is probably my favorite track on Meddle after Echoes. Thanks JP. Hope you feel better soon.
Thank you Kris :)
Better? Has he been feeling worse?
Those spacey volume swells fading in and out...ethereal! I still recall the first listen I was mesmerized
It is the best song on the album with the exception of Echoes.🎸🎶
...and One Of These days and A Pillow Of Winds?
@@lemming9984 I'd make them a 3 way tie. lol
@Wagner Ribeiro de Santana, agree completely
I'm also partial to a Pillow of Winds over Fearless. I enjoy the guitar work in pillow a lot more, it's just so much deeper and darker. But Fearless nonetheless is also a great song off Meddle. Happy you're enjoying this album so far. For me, it's probably Floyd's best pre Darkside album.
Damn! I want to disagree with you because this is the internet but hell! A pillow of winds is a phenomenal song! I see the two as choosing your favorite child.
Nice analysis, I enjoy hearing your thoughts as a new listener, because I first heard this around 1977. I think it's a fantastic song, great sounding, back in the day it was wonderful to play this LP on the turntable and hear it all. I remember a friends brothers had 6
copies of Meddle, they kept wearing it out through the years, they played it so much !
I don't think the Floyd ever performed "Fearless" live.
Are Pink Floyd overrated? Absolutely not. This is a stand out track from the pre Dark Side era. It starts off sounding like a country song. The catchy guitar riff. The great bass work as you stated. The inspirational lyrics. Strangely they never played it live as far as I know. Although I saw Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets play it live last year along with many forgotten PF gems. But without Gilmour's rich vocals it's not quite the same.
Pink Floyd is overrated. Their first album is their best. They were never the same after they kicked Syd Barrett out of the band. Just like The Grateful Dead, most of their popularity is based on their music being connected to drug use.
@@calvinwboaz7085 opinions are like assholes and you have more than most people do.

I don’t recall the first time I heard this nearly 50 years ago but I’m sure it didn’t take me long to make it one of my favorites. It’s different. It’s beautiful. It’s simple. It’s powerful. It just touches my soul in just the right way. I’ll never tire of it.
Pre-video comment: Hope you feel better.
Post video: I quite enjoyed your reaction and analysis. Frankly, I had heard and enjoyed the album but, it’s like going to a 70’s college music class and analyzing the meanings and structures of music the kids like today (forwarded to now, interestingly, because of streaming and the internet).
Pink Floyd’s struggle to reinvent itself after losing its lead writer, guitarist, and vocalist was to me it’s most interesting period. Although I totally love the later albums.
Fearless reminds me of the“More”movie soundtrack and Ummagumma, PF did in ‘69. Love those albums they are quirky and experimental. Hope you delve into those albums someday. Another enjoyable reaction, hope you feel better.
Peace and Music
I'm so glad you decided to do this album, only Dark Side is better in my mind. I think the entire record shows Pink Floyd finding themselves as a band and everything works.
In lesser hands Fearless is a pretty folk tune that wouldn't be remembered. But when these guys get their hands on a pretty folk song they turn it into a mini epic, from folk song to Floyd song. And this is the first album that the Floyd sound that we grew to love was consistently their from beginning to end.
I love this song, up there with some of my favorite PF songs. Great reaction Justin as always, I'm glad you're getting to discover a truly amazing band.
Ty Dukes🙃
Glad you are enjoying the delve into the album as a whole.
Seeing Kate Bush referenced prompts me to suggest another British singer songwriter for you. A musicians, musician, he has had members of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and The Who play with him at one time or another as well as Kate Bush. His name is Roy Harper and I implore you to give him a go. I even have a first song for you to try. "The Game parts 1-5". Please, please, please give it a thought. I know you like looking through the lyrics and he is someone who won't disappoint.
I like this song but it’s not my favourite on this album. First place goes to Echoes then One of These Days then in third place I love San Tropez which is a very under rated song in my opinion. I love it’s jazzy style and laid back feel. Can’t wait for you to listen to it. 😃👍🏻
A Pillow of Winds is my favorite PF song of all.
St. Tropez is great. As is Seamus. And Pillow of winds
Anything with Gilmour's voice on it (where you can hear it super clearly and pick up all the tones) is gonna float my boat. It informs my musicianship to hear how his vocals and his guitar playing both have that smooth but gritty quality. How can things be both smooth and gritty ? Dunno, but he does it.
Dave Gilmour and Rick Wright usually provide the harmonies. The reason it sounds like it is double tracked is that their voices are really similar.
The song is about the people of LIVERPOOL or SCOUSERS as we are called.
Beautiful and inspirational song. Good one, thanks!
I had not heard this in a long time, I forgot how good it is. Thank you, have a great Sunday.
Ty Kuhn, you as well!
Excellent song, very Beatleesque
Beatles were a big influence of floyd forsure.
So happy you’re doing this album, thank you! You should do Seamus and Echoes in one video like you did Horizons and Suppers Ready! Just a thought.
This is one of my absolute favorite Floyd songs, and yet I have never researched it. I had no idea Rogers and Hammerstein's You'll Never Walk Alone from the musical Carousel is used by football (soccer) clubs in the UK, and never figured out the chanting of "Liverpool" and whichever the other team is. For me, "You'll Never Walk Alone" is strongly associated with the musical it comes from, and with Jerry Lewis singing it to close out the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association Labor Day Telethon for years.
So, for me it was always a very uplifting addition to the song, and I will continue to listen to it that way. But the commentary above regarding You'll Never Walk Alone's tie in to British football, and the tribal affiliations it evokes for post war British education concepts is fascinating to read.
Thank you to the community for the eye-opening insight in to a favorite song.
This is one of my favorite Floyd tunes
Great job! This was always a standout song for me. The whole album is just so amazing and very different overall from other Floyd albums. On to the next...
Strong track. Like an anthem for life
this song is a little wonderful gem inside a great album
Hi Justin, another thoughtful analysis. Like many others here I can't wait for you to react to Echoes but also a gentle reminder to do the Pompeii version once you have completed the studio one. I'm 71 now and been a Floydian since '67 but for me Echoes at Pompeii was the best thing they ever did. Keep going!
Ty Alan! I'll keep it in mind
Thumbs up before I even watch! Anyone who makes the choice to react to such an invisible yet incredible song gets my vote of confidence!!
Anyone can choose Another Brick in the Wall Pt 2 or Comfortably Numb. But this is ignored by non Floyd fans!
Ty so much Frank!!
@@JustJP Two thumbs up after I heard your reaction!!
This is one of my favourites from this album. Simple and great song.
You have perfect sound quality. Respect
Ty! Took a while to get to it
🤔I think I'm liking your taste in music young man. 😉😁
I hope your not sick.🤒✌&👏
8:27 "They (PF) have a great relationship with each other" ...heh! 🤣 You'll have to research the relationship between Gilmour and Waters. To be honest, I was disappointed that you didn't pick one of the next three PF albums to review. However, I’m enjoying this album so far. It's been a long time since I’ve heard it and I never took the time to appreciate it like I did the others.
Haha, maybe I'll have to look into that!
JustJP did it gilmore played a 12 chords 🎸?
Braccio Di ferro ?
Excellent insights in your observations. That is one of the amazing songs that sounds as if a familiar folk melody but it elevates to such a bright and shining place. Having said that I have no bloody idea why this piece made me conjure up Peter Gabriel's song Moribund the Burgermeister, my subconscious is like that, maybe the alternate universe version of Fearless, I have no idea, but I'll special request that when you have the time. Cheers.
One of my favorite under rated PF songs...
I really enjoy your thorough and thoughtful breakdowns. I also appreciate how after the initial listen, you go back to the song and point out specific elements. I also like the styles and genres that you're delving into. Curious, are you a musician?
Ty itchy! Only on an amateur level, but I listen to a LOT of music lol
The chanting reminded me of a scene when people are gathered together, all around the world, reacting to the alien message in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"... In the segment where what I think is India is shown, a similar chanting is reflecting the pattern of the alien musical progression... Has anyone asked Mr. Spielberg if he happened to be listening to some Pink Floyd when he wrote that part?! ;-]
This so reminds me of the style of their LP "More".
love it
One of my fave PF songs. Fave album too.
Also: Fish (Marillion) does a solid cover of this.
Love this one - thank you!
No no, thank YOU
I saw the flash of 'Running Up That Hill' by Kate Bush so are you familiar with the album? It's one of my top 10 favorite albums.
Only a few of her songs
Justin, are you by now aware that David Gilmour was instrumental (pun intended) in developing teenaged Kate Bush'es career and talents?
@@OronOfMontreal I am! 🙃
Glad you are doing this album as everything after this is like a different band. Don't get me wrong, I love Dark Side, Animals, etc. but I have a special fondness for earlier Floyd when they were a little more bold and experimental. I would suggest going backward in time from this album.
Ty Robert, glad you're enjoying it
Thanks for the review!
fun fact; Kate Bush was discovred by David Gilmour 👍Gilmour played guitar on "running up that hill"
Gilmour played on a live version of “Running Up That Hill” song with her, but on the record the guitar was played by Alan Murphy.
I like a lot of the songs on side 1 of Meddle, but let's be honest here. They're just a 20 minute preamble to the main event. Can't wait to get jp's reaction to Seamus. 😃
My fav on this album
Love this song. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Pink Floyd - Echoes. When ?
Something ineffable about this song, very magical, def contender for my favorite Floyd song
This album is the transitional one between the old experimental Floyd, and the Waters led more commercial Floyd
Haken - the architect.. great tune!!!
I always say this, they don’t create music. They create soundscapes. That is why their tone is always on point. They probably think of the tone and the atmosphere first and then the actual notes. That’s why they can also make a dog do a blues solo!
Meddle to me has a problem, being it so two-faced. But if it only consisted of side two, it still would be a classic album. Pink Floyd was still trying to pinpoint their identity? They found it in Echoes I believe. It shows best in the live performance of Echoes (Pink Floyd, live in Pompeii). That execution is just so perfect!
The greatest album for meditation
Nice song, David Gilmour is on point with his playing and singing on Fearless.. Getting close to the masterwork Echoes...
Nearly there...
Now go to the beach by yourself with some good headphones and put this album on. Just lay down and watch the waves, maybe smoke a joint. You'll be more relaxed then you have ever been
Check out earlier Pink Floyd wit Syd Barret, "Bike", "SeeEmily Play", "Interstellar Overdrive". Smoke a fatty and chill while listening to Psychedelic Floyd
Nice. I like it.
I'm glad!
My Favorite!!!!!!!
you should listen to knife-edge by elp, good song 👍
You'll Never Walk Alone...
lol Thank you for flashing Kate Bush! ...Wait, that sounded wrong. ;-o
Lol!
I don't quite get the need to come up with a *favorite* song from each album. A good album can have lots of good songs on it. Sure, you might like some more than others, but I'd resist the urge to have some sort of competition between songs on an album.
Yeah more Trippy prog rock from Floyd
"The way they seamlessly transtion" or "the way they Seamus-ly transition"
😅
YNWA...

Ty for that VdGG!
ruinrd by the chanting for me..
Ooooh no! Ruined by the typo...
What’s the point of the football singing?
Stop drinking bottled water!
Great song.
no
I first listened to this 22-23 years ago. While I like some of the guitar work and subtleties in their, the song just has not stood the test of time for me. The lyrics just fall flat to me and don't really hit me very hard. They just sound anticlimactic and uninteresting. Pillow of Winds and Echoes are really the only songs I will still listen to, and probably Echoes is the only one I actually feel like listening to anymore.
Sadly much of Pink Floyd is like that for me now.
I find most of the Meddle album to be a bit "weak sauce" to be honest. It it wasn't for One of These Days and Echoes, a better title would've been Fumble.
Fearless isn't a bad song. A lot MORE could be done with that riff! But the arrangement and Gilmour's vocal is so laid-back that it feels like no one really wants to be there.
"Sigh...I guess I'll sing a lead vocal, then..."
I like St. Tropez. Both the place and the song, which I guess you'll get to next? But after that comes "Seamus" the worst thing Pink Floyd ever did.
It was meant as a cute joke, but it comes across as a rallying cry against PETA. It's so goddamn annoying!!!
I'd just skip straight to Echoes if I was you. But I'm not...
Passive realization of what holds man back. Chilling our way to nirvana. This track hits deeeep.
