  • So since they are on me like white on rice right now, we have to just duo videos. This is basically an experiment so let's see how it goes. Welcome to Floyd Friday! It's always something lol... they have been taking my videos down left and right the past two days. But both of these songs were so relaxing... but it's just the calm before the storm that is "Echoes".

Meddle is actually my favorite Pink Floyd album. Often overlooked. The “non-echoes” side is outstanding and of course Echoes is great. There is a lot of pre-Dark Side that is worth a listener’s time.

Meddle was the album that made me a Pink Floyd fan for life back in 1972 when I was a junior in high school. Then the following year DSOTM happened lol. I wore the grooves off both vinyl LPs and the ones that followed. 50+ years later they're still my all-time favorite band. San Tropez 100% sounds like it could have been written by Paul McCartney, kind of a When I'm 64/Maxwell's Silver Hammer type joint. Echoes will blow your mind like everyone else's. Great reaction, keep 'em coming.

Yes, exactly. The whole album shows the range of the solid musicianship within the band at this point (also, the beautifully modulating guitars in "A Pillow of Winds", the song just before Fearless).

Fearless is the first Pink Floyd song I ever loved and became obsessed with, when I was a kid in the late 70’s. My Dad had this album his record collection, but his younger brother had already scooped up all his other Floyd records. Uncle Dave’s loss in leaving Meddle behind was definitely my gain!
As someone now in recovery, this song, especially the first verse, means even more to me.
Love watching your Floyd journey. ❤️

LEE - You got the Nick being Ringo for a song or two spot on.. I'm sure it's what makes it feel "Beatles-y" And talking of the Beatles, as we seem to more and more these days. Revolver was their pivotal moment when everything changed and Sgt Peppers was next... Well with Floyd I think Meddle was their Revolver before they pivoted and slammed out of the gates with Dark Side of the Moon. Keep on Rocking young sir....

The Beatles may have kick-started the Merseybeat era, but in terms of UK chart success they played second fiddle for a short while to fellow Liverpudlians Gerry & The Pacemakers, the first act to top the charts with their first 3 singles. The third of these was You'll Never Walk Alone, which was adopted by the fans of Liverpool FC as a kind of anthem. Supporters had sung at football grounds before, but for thousands to belt out a current chart hit was something new. It was seen by many as an expression of working-class solidarity - in the days when going to a game wouldn't cost you much more than the price of a couple of beers - and Floyd were known to admire the city and its people for their uncompromising left-wing political views.
Great reaction. Have a like and a subscribe.

"Fearlessly the idiot faced the crowd" is likely a half-veiled allusion to Syd Barrett - "idiot" being used here in a metaphorical way, like "quirky loner guy". The song is about restoring a sense of confidence in yourself, about climbing out of a ditch of depression - and also about the individual vs the group. The crowd chanting "You'll never walk alone" is an illustration of the positive, buoyant sense of belonging with a group, in a non-restrictive way.
I love this album (and seventies Floyd in general) - for many years "Meddle" with its ear cover, was sitting at the front of my collection of LP albums, stored in two disused beer crates open at the top. :)

My first ever Floyd album back when I was 16 years old in 1971. it in a way is transition album where they eventually got their signature sound with echoes that led to their next release Dark side of the moon. previous albums had some good stuff on as well they were really experimenting with them check out Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast off Atom Heart Mother (the album cover has a gorgeous lady looking back at you with dark soulful eyes) or Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict off Ummagumma

Meddle is the hinge between their earlier experimental quirkiness and the later expansive epics. BTW it would be good to react to You'll Never Walk Alone by Gerry And The Pacemakers. It's not the original but is the definitive cover that would give cultural context to the Floyd use of the Liverpool fiotball fans recording.

San Tropez is really good even for Floyd. All the band - Waters singing, Gilmour on very jazzy guitar and slide (he’s so much more than just solos), and some of the best solo piano from Rick. All held together by Nick.
    Fearless is also fantastic.
Lee, if you love Rick, “Summer 68” from Atom Heart Mother is an excellent song. It’s his song: main vocals, washes of piano layers, Dave on harmony and strumming, all at a pretty fast pace ❤

Re: "You'll Never Walk Alone", In the era before high tech PA systems it was traditional for football (soccer) crowds in the UK to belt out songs at the top of their lungs. It was how they showed support for their team, and filled breaks in the game. I remember as a teenager being totally confused, although it was very Pink Floyd (and British) to just randomly stick that on the end of a song. Which then feeds into the Beatles comparisons, which is actually on the money. They were always lurking in Pink Floyd music (hey, PF recorded their first album next to The Beatles making Sgt Peppers at Abbey Road, so it HAD to rub off on them), but it was on this album that all that started to come forward. This would develop further on 'Obscured By Clouds' before coming of age on 'Dark Side Of The Moon'.

I am in my 8th decade and 60+ years later, Football crowds still never rely on any P A System. All chants are started by the crowd apart from the start of a Liverpool home match when YNWA comes on:)
