- This is the first of this new series about making a copy of this Caravaggio painting, Boy bitten by a lizard.
I feel I can learn to paint using his technique only by trying it and seeing if it works for me. This is not a definitive version of Caravaggio's method, but by having a go I have improved how I paint my own pictures in oils.
It would have been lovely to spend time watching him work in person, but as my time machine is still in the shed I am doing my own detective work and trying to unpick his method.
Picasso said you can't teach technique, and he was a genius so you can't argue with that! I find that actually painting is the only way I'll ever improve my paintings. We get to our destination by working, and learning as we go. Please let me know what you think. Хобби
I also want to thank you for sharing these techniques. Watching and following along is a wonderful way to learn.

That's what Rembandt used to do- in a place nr Hull, go into a field to mix white.
Do ypu just add more medium to create the "grey" tones or do you brush out your white until it looks right?
Try Payne’s grey over ivory black-less dull color when dried
Thank you
Thank you for watching
Hi Matt, how did you get the drawing on the board?
Hi see the learning glazing from bouguereau portrait for that
So after watching many carravagio process videos, I understand that he kind of paints backwards like a negative image. Thats insane.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I can't find you on Patreon. Can you send me a link please?
Hi sorry I'm not doing the Patreon any more and I'll take down any links to it. You can still see any video I make on here
where can i purchase your print of the boy bitting lizard and thank you very much for the great demonstration. Do you work wet on wet for the underpainting
Perché non ci sono i sottotitoli in italiano? Grazie.
What did you use for the underpainting?
Same oils and medium. I have also used acrylic on some paintings
Dose these works on acrylic to
yes but you have to slow the drying with acrylics
Ever use zinc white for this method?
Sorry for late reply . No personally I’m not a fan of zinc white , I’m sure you could but I’d have to start all over working out its strengths relative to other colours. I find it too weak, but then I’m not experienced using it
do you have an etsy shop?
Hi no sorry not any more!
Imprimatura as middle tones"... wow
Long,Long, Long.......
Well you lost me in the first 10 mins by using titanium white - such a modern pigment in a video about old masters techniques?
sarah Brock i suggest you not to buy a Gerorgian white titanium! 3 stars! are not good !
Also this is the showcase of techniques...not materials... the technique i.e how you apply the paint is what is important here.
Hard to say, but that "pancake painting" has nothing to do with Caravaggio...
Thanks yes I know it needs improvement. It would be great if you could post a video showing how it’s done, I was just trying to work it out.
Good videos Matt, thanks.
Thanks for watching
