7:15 actually the Z8 can also tilt to the side for vertical shooting. I really prefer the Z8 screen instead of the Zf or any flipout only.

The setting that makes the focus transition look nice and seamless/natural is also the reason you couldn't get it to snap quickly. By default it's a slow natural looking focus pull and won't quickly jump from subject to subject if your subject is blocked. You can change settings to make it respond faster to blocked focus/changing subject and also faster focus when shifting
Yeah, exactement same as Sony cameras.
You can have it snappy, or you can have it nice and natural. Having both is a little more of a challenge

Oh lord. A couple of thoughts:
Why demand RED raw in a product test for a Nikon product when you didn't even test NRAW?
Why ask for a Nikon cinema camera when they just bought RED? The obvious strategy would be to release cine cameras under the established cine camera brand.
Why ask for dedicated foto / video bodies when the Z6iii (likely a more allroundish Zf) and the Z7iii (dedicated photo camera) are rumored already?
Cause it sounds cool and fun and neat
Red RAW would be really nice actually because N-RAW just isn't widely supported yet: only Resolve really properly supports it and Adobe doesn't have any plans to start doing so.

@@ineedagoodusername3164, I dont think NIKON cares because no real professional filmmaker (who actually utilizes the full benefits of RAW) wants to deal with a bloated work flow of buggy ghetto connected applications just to do simple color grading and compositing. They like the all-in-one simplicity of Resolve that doesnt require "logging in" or hog your system resources due to years of layering redundant code instead of actually optimizing it. Also, NRAW or any RAW workload isnt designed for casuals in the first place. Hence, why it's not a huge selling point for any hybrid camera. Otherwise, it would confuse the already flooded market of RUclipsrs who can't tell difference between a cinema camera and hybrid camera. How many of them purchased the FX30 and complained about it not being like thier previous Sony APS-C camera? Nikon actually takes notes with these complaints.
Bro, you can adjust the autofocus speed in the menu. Set it to 5, and you will get a fast switch focus
I feel if you took the time to do your research you would have gotten the right setting for your autofocus. The Z 8 and Z 9 has one of the best autofocus in the business and it’s way more customisable that what you will ever get on Sony. If you want to get the best response in your autofocus in video, ensure that your set your camera to AFF and not AFC, Wide Area and ensure that your tap to focus on your LCD screen is active and then dial in your AF speed to suit your shooting scenarios.
What stabilizer did you use with the Z8 and the 24-70 2.8?

You should try a z6ii and see if nikon mirrorless was even a potato. PS, as a photographer I'd like to have 16bit NEFs from that red acquisition.
The Z8 is the best camera for people like myself who needs to get the best photo + video in one body and not miss the action - This should be the trend forward (and not separate bodies for Photo and Video - I don't have the money and can't carry 2 cameras in every part of my daily life!) . I mainly film myself (I am a student) and my friends in school events so I have been leveraging the 8k H.265 video and 45MP photos extensively. Combined with the 24-70F2.8 Lens + the Megadap 2nd generation Adapter for the Sony Telephoto, it has served all situations from long concerts and speeches to Badminton and Sailing extremely well. Hopefully 8k60p RedCodeRAW will come soon (hopefully with options for higher compression compared to N-RAW), which will make RAW video more accessible and I can use it for specific moments
PS: Upgraded from A7RII that I have been using for around 9 years since 2015.
Ngl, I switched to Found for my bank at the start of new year and it legit was game changing for my business. I actually have a business savings outside of taxes now

NIKON stayed dedicated to a certain professional market so its like comparing a sports car with a manual transmission to a common car with an automatic transmisson. The later isnt "better" just because because you see them more on the road than the former made for the race track. RED is sort of like the Ferrari of cinema cameras so it makes sense why NIKON doesnt want to focus more on competing with the common car.
Also, NIKON likely took one for the team because im sure Blackmagic, Panasonic, Sony and Canon where all tired of REDs petty aggression towards anything similar to true RAW video. Actually, RED would have been a bigger player for indy filmakers if they didnt attack Apple for ProRes and charge insane prices for relabeled/rehoused SSDs. REDs foolish lawsuits and greed got the best of them in the long run. Maybe, NIKON will change that.
Blackmagic circumvented that a while ago with Braw, the others yeah, not so much 😅

Yes: Old F-mount 3rd party glas with Nikon's own FTZ-adapter.
E-mount to Z-Mount with the Megadap ETZ21 for example. But I personally didn't have good luck with the latter one. It couldn't really stand being mounted to a camera and medium sized lens that was fixed via capture clip while hiking off-trail. Focus worked fine, IBIS almost un-alived itself when I mounted a stabilized lens.
I only shoot stills but Nikon acquiring red makes me excited for the next cinema push in the market.
The ZF’s screen can be flipped around and hidden to make it better match the aesthetic of being an FM2

I have the z9 and zf. Gutted the zf had a crop at 4k 60 when the ancient 4/3 Panasonic GH5 has full width. The z8 and 9 though are awesome
Its all about sensor readout speed. smaller sensors are generally faster.
@@kingsamvisuals both Z9 and ZF are FX full frame, the ZF has half the resolution too (almost). Compared to the GH5 which is 20mp the ZF has 24mp and is 7 years newer and double the price so a bit poo.
@@UXXV yes I said generally. If a sensor can't read fast enough to get 60 reads in one second then it won't work. The z8 has a stacked sensor, which is expensive but makes it very fast. Non stacked sensors like the R5 and a7rV use pixel binning or line skipping to do full width 4k60. It throws away some pixels and gives a lower quality image compared to the oversampled mode. Another way they way they get around this is cropping in so they don't have to read the whole sensor.
@@kingsamvisuals My point is the GH5 has an old cheap sensor and it can do non crop 4K 60 at 20mp - binned or not. The ZF doesnt even offer that and its 7 years newer and twice the price.
@@UXXV The GH5 sensor is small compared to the Zf's, the 4K60 crop is still larger than the GH5 sensor's 4K60. I believe they are using the Z6/6II sensor in the Zf which also did 4K60 cropped, the sensor may be able to do more and if they plan on using it for the Z6 III (seem many manufacturers are reusing sensors anyway), limiting the Zf makes sense from sales/competition standpoint. The Zf got a lot of new features thanks to Expeed 7 and the 4K60 crop still provides great quality should one choose to use it.

8k nraw is really where it's at when it comes to the Z8. I understand why you chose what you did, but there's def a difference between the two.
9:15 what is the point of a specialized mirrorless? If you want a video camera you can get a video camera, if you want stills ... there are a lot of them. What we still does not have is a real hybrid what a mirrorless camera must be. Panasonic S5II is the closest it can get to that, you can do anything with it, we just need the Sony A1 with the screen from the A7rV and we have a winner :D. Or check out the A9III - pretty good hybrid but a little expensive like the A1.
Let me explain - we got the FX3 and FX30 - video/"cinema" centric cameras and they are not a video camera at all... they just removed the EVF, the S5II is more of a cinema camera than both of them for the price of the FX30(the refurbished X-T4). My point is if it is going to be a cinema/video centric camera make it with ND, shutter angle, waveform, LUTs, ... I am a Sony shooter and I hate it that I can't use my lenses on a Panasonic body, I was going to switch right away.
Imagine paying paying 6500$ for A9iii just to have 24mp images. Anything lower than 40mp doesn't count as a hybrid. 24mp is plenty but not when i spend 6500$ for the body alone, i want higher megapixels than 24
It was just an unproven rumor before the FX30 launch that it uses the same sensor as the X-T4. The X-T4 has an X trans sensor. The FX30/a6700 has a sensor that's much more similar to the one in the a7Rv, just apsc sized. Completely different sensor to the X-T4. You're right that the FX3 and FX30 aren't really cinema cameras, the panasonics and fujis are way better at being cine cameras, but keep in mind that the Sony FXs do 4k 120 full frame whilst the s5ii has to go to apsc mode just to do 4k60, not to mention the low light capability of the fx3 and the best autofocus on the market.
@@f.iph7291 You're paying for 120FPS RAW photos. If you want fast high MP photos you can get the a1.
@@jammaschan X-T3 is the same sensor as the FX30, but I say X-T4 because it also has IBIS. The color filter array is not X-trans which is better if you ask me, but the read out speed is the same.
About 4K 120 - FX30 does that with a serious 1:1 crop and half the dynamic range. If you think that is usable...
FX3 is a different story but still it does not have shutter angle and it will NEVER have open gate... which is more important for me than 4K 120p...
@@SimeonKolev it's still up to what you want to use the cameras for, and as I said, I agree that the fujis and panasonics are better cinema cameras. (Still doesn't mean that the FX30 are using Fuji sensors because they aren't, readout speeds are better on the fx30 compared to the fx3)

Just because you didn't know about a 90 plus year old brand , doesn't make it a meme . Nikon has been around for a long time , and made the best DSLR ever , amongst many other contributions to photography. Not everyone shoots video , on the photo side of things Nikon has always been in the top few. RUclips is not the world .

@@David_Quinn_Photographynot just Nikon, Canon also very late to the mirroless. And Canon hasn’t been making any significant cameras ever since entering mirrorless, yet for some reason people making fun of Nikon instead of Canon which is weird.
One reason for the flip out screen on the Zf specifically is the ability to actually flip it all the way around and put it away making it disappear and having no screen at all - just like on a camera from the past. - so, having a flip up only on the Zf is not a great way to go.
As far as the Z8 screen - this is the best for photography and for any serious video applications an external monitor is used anyway - if just for vlogging, the Z8 was never intended to be a vloggin camera - who buys a $4000 vlogging camera so I think the Z8 screen is fine. This said, I agree with you that all screens should just be like the A7RV and do both - that is in fact the one thing that Sony still does better than Nikon IMO (except for video AF, but as you pointed out this is just subjective as the Nikon is more cinematic).

They need to develop a new logarithmic curve that's for sure.
Nlog is great. Nothing wrong with it...and R3d has far more compression options and in general is much more efficient than N-raw

Ngl, if Nikon can do what sony did way back with the VG series cameras where it’s a camcorder body with video features but MADE for content creators, I would so switch to nikon in a mili-second 🙌
I’m currently testing the Z8 and will probably move to it from my current Sony setup. We are all different and have different needs and expectations but as a Sony shooter I don’t understand why your reaction to this camera would be lukewarm. It has everything that top spec Sony, not just one, any of them. Argument for a flip out screen for a video makers is a bit weird to me. Personally i don’t vlog and having to flip screen out just to tilt it up is a hinderance. Argument for dedicated body for video and photo seems very backward when you’re reviewing the one truly unlimited hybrid camera they has the top specs for both photo and video. The screen on z9 isn’t “fine”. It has 2100 nits. That’s more than just fine. Having the ability to record 8.3K60 RAW, no forced crop in any of the resolution / frame rate combination and superior ibis practically didn’t make an appearance. I’m still a Sony users and far from fanboy of any brand as I test and play with anything I can get my hands on. This overview feels a bit incomplete to me.
They have to fix the DR on n-log and give us less compressed 10-bit codecs, if they do that it'll be a near perfect camera.
@@AstralMediaCinemawhat’s wrong with DR in N-Log? It’s only a tiny bit lower than on any modern Sony. Not to an extent that would make any practical difference. Having a choice of h264, h265, ProRes Hq, ProRes Raw and N-Raw gives you amazing flexibility of codec choice depending on the task. I would not say no to a regular ProRes 442 though.

In my country it was never a reason for ridicule. It is a respected brand and most do not work with digital "cinema" cameras. There is less and less justification for working for social media with one of those inflated price cameras. Your pros of the z8 was 80% ad. You say Nikon has to make a dedicated video camera like the Sony fx3 but how has the nikon Z8 been inferior to sony fx3 in terms of image quality and features? I'm trying to be genuine here. Is this gatekeeping for Sony? The nikon does 8k oversampled 4k 12 bit 24,60,120 fps UNCROPPED. The Dynamic range is on par (in my opinion in N raw it is superior and natively supported in RESOLVE ) compared to the FX3 10 bit pre noise reduced SLOG3. In low light the nikon z8 is good upto ISO 12800, ISO 6400 if you shoot commericials with very good SNR and beyond ISO 12800 if you are BBC documentary guy or insane, I dont see the need for Noise reduction based imagery from the FX3 when i have CLEAN OVERSAMPLED 4k 12 bit. Colors, dont even get me started. Zach! Dont gatekeep for Sony man! In case of my bias here, i am not even a Nikon Fan boy! i got Fuji Juice (XT4) lol. I Also am saving up for a RED.
I think there's still plenty of room for a squarely video-focused Nikon - and I say this as a Nikon Z shooter. The Z8/9 have excellent sensors and can certainly be used for pro video, but they're lacking certain features that are nice to have in a pro video camera, e.g. shutter angle, anamorphic desqueeze, XLR inputs, thread holes for rigging, internal ND, false colour, etc. Certainly some of those things can be sort of added through rigging and accessories, but there's a level of convenience and speed on set that hybrid cameras can't match there.
I understand and the "Nice to haves" is a endless list and subjective. Hybrids are for speed and versatility. It's a dual CMOS stacked sensor on Z8 for that reason. Most video focused cameras (except Fx3) are slow and cumbersome to get on ground and going.

There's no crop on Z8.
Z8 can record up to 8.3K and has no crop in any resolution / frame rate combination including 4K120. It also has ibis and more then twice the resolution of the r8. R8 is ok camera for a beginner at this price point but not a real competitor in the segment.
Wow. I'm surprised at how bad the AF is on Nikon. I assumed that was something of interest for RED to adopt but it's probably going backwards. Awful. I don't like the colors of Nikon either. No style.

I had the Z8 for only one hour and the images I got out of it were horrible. They would smear, micro jitters all over the place, and even though the people I shot were front and center it would always focus on the back wall. I’m sure some of it had to do with my settings, but it really put me off for Nikon cameras. My eight year-old Sony cam auto focused 100 times better.
