- I think that there are 8 players in NBA history that you can make the argument for as the Greatest of All Time. Tim Duncan is one of them. In this video, I make the case.

EDIT: I misspoke at 19:49 and said that Duncan's win percentage was the highest of anyone in any sport ever. It's actually the highest of anyone in the 4 major North American sports from 1997-present. Larry Bird and Magic Johnson had higher win percentages for their careers. Sorry for the mistake.

So I don't know if you know by now or not, but Tim Duncan does NOT have the highest win percentage of "any athlete ever". That statement is plain wrong and I don't know where I came up with it. He does have the highest win % of any athlete since 1997, but that's not "ever". This was my first video though, so please forgive my dumbness.
There are several athletes with a win percentage of 100% since 1997 (by going 1-0).

Great video but my 1 critique I don’t think it’s a long shot for manu and tony to make the hall of fame. I think it’s just going to depend on who is eligible with them. Prime example this year against Tim kg and Kobe naw they wouldn’t make it. But any other year there’s a strong case. They both got 4 rings tony has a finals mvp and manu is regarded as one of the best 6th men ever. Not that I’m over hyping them either but I think their name carry just enough weight to get them there in a reasonable amount of time
It's about time someone put Tim Duncan in the discussion. Never flashy, he just won. Basically the Bill Russell of the 21st century.
I'd say, that's the point why he is NOT the goat. Rings are a big part of a discussion, but it's far from everything.
What about thrilling people? "The greatest" is not the same as "the most efficient"...

@@Zett76 Duncan is not even the the most efficient. Kobe for most of his career was a more efficient scorer than Tim Duncan. Steph Curry is miles away more efficient at scoring than Duncan....

@@seabookarno123 nah i really think it is due to the nature of basketball where individual performance matters soooo much matter. just compare it to football where plays include 22 players no matter what. clutch moments in basketball are exclusively an individualistic feat (I'd say 99% of the time). just my opinion
people like the story of competitive, seemingly unstoppable high-light reel assholes like jordan over consistent great teammates like duncan
I think it's because it's hard to quantify, so people who don't watch the Spurs in-depth won't see a lot of his greatness.

If you adjust his stats to per 36 minutes play, he had been remarkably consistent and average about 20 points 10 rebounds or near every season.
People dont remember how athletic he used to be before busting a knee so he'd literally been playing with a handicap for like 14 years

This vid made me cry. Tim was my favorite athlete in my entire childhood. Many would scoff if I called him the GOAT but there was no player I wanted to be more like than Tim Duncan. I'm no pro basketball player, but I try to approach my life towards people the way I saw Tim Duncan approach his peers. He was an incredible basketball player, but an even better leader and role model. He inspires me in many ways. Thanks for making this video.

The 2000's Spurs were the hipsters of the NBA. Shooting fast break 3's before it was cool. Explosive point guards like Tony Parker who'd slash the defense a new one much like most slashers these days, Timmy D was basically the modern day big except the guy was a defensive juggernaut. And then there's Manu. Everything that's cool in the NBA now, Manu was doing it 20 years ago.

Tim Duncan is the most underrated great player ever. He is by far one of the best of all time but NEVER gets mentioned due to him being sooo humble and unassuming.
Also he played for a small market. If he played for New York or Los Angeles, he'll be top 3 by most people
To imagine that Tim could have had 6 or 7 chips due to the fact that a couple times the coin of fate didn’t fall in his favor with key plays or scenarios is mind boggling.

Duncan *did* have a dominant peak in 2003 when he was League MVP, Finals MVP, and closed out the Finals with a near quadruple double. He was arguably the best all-around player from 1999-2007, with the only exception being in 2000 when he had knee surgery and Shaq briefly took the throne.
The near quadruple double was an uncredited quadruple double! He actually did it! There is a video showing just that here on YT.

@@jackbrumbaugh339 Depends on what you mean by "better." I will concede 2000 and '01 to Shaq since he was the champ and FMVP - but Duncan outplayed him in '99 and '03, and he had knee surgery in 2000. And he was carrying a team of scrubs in '01 and '02.
Imo he was the best from 03-07. Shaq had it from 99-02, Kobe took it from 08-10.

@Wally Reyes Definitely massive respect to David Robinson. I'm a lifetime spurs fan so I'll always love The Admiral but being born in '98 Timmy, Manu, and Tony were just the guys when I was coming up. They're all undeniably amazing in my eyes though it's like picking between favorite children.
even when my rational basketball mind knows its Duncan>Robinson>Ginobili>Parker they and Pop were all such a fun classy act to watch every night and I'll never forget watching all my old grandmas from SA losing their minds on the couch every game night this team has been a blessing to watch for at least 2 decades and even now they're fun

Yeah. Tim was never flashy, never on the front page or anything. But he was a talented player, stayed loyal to his team, and won alot of championships. Not much else you can ask for.

Thanks for this. Tim Duncan has been my favorite of all time player (of any sport and I'm a soccer chilean fan most of the time). I just love the guy and I followed his career from the very beginning. This pays off the underrated merit he had.
I personally don't think Ginobili is a longshot. His overseas and international play weights heavily, especially his Olympic gold.
I think both Parker and Manu are world bb HOF. (Manu had a lot success internationally - both in EU club and worlds. Parker was 18 when he was drafted and played consistently with the same team and won).

Manu is a first ballot hall of famer, easily. His international success alone would get him in there.
Tony is definitely getting in too.

Something else amazing about him: in the 2014 WCF, G6 against the Thunder, time after time down the stretch in the 4th and OT, the Spurs went to a 38 year-old TD in the post to get buckets. He COOKED Serge, had Mark Jackson call him "Old man River Walk" and then told the world that they were going to crush the Heat in the finals. Best player of his generation - and it's not particularly close
Hey man I’ve just found your channel and have been blazing through them. They are amazing but I especially am appreciative of you making this video. Tim Duncan is my favourite player and I absolutely love the details and credit he gets in this. It really helps to how how great he really was. There are so many other stories to tell about him like how he helped teammates out in training or even gave advice to opposing players on the court. But even so this video does his career justice. I’m glad I have something to show to people to check out instead of numerous videos and articles. So again thanks your for making it.

Being a Spurs fan, I’ve always thought Kobe and Duncan had mirror careers, each 5 time champions and both have numerous accolades. They both are the best of the generation.

Tim Duncan was always the best player on his team and he was much more consistent, with Kobe you have to worry about him chasing Finals MVP meanwhile you have Timmy D who is always in it for the team and was also winning Finals MVP at the same time.
Except for Duncan has more finals MVP and reg. Season MVP. Plus Duncan was the alpha male for 13 years or so. Kobe was shaqs bitch for when they were teammates
@floater5661 I saw duncans whole career. He was more of a role player for the second half of his career. He wasnt utilized on offense as much so he could be utilized for defense. Go back and watch the last 8 years of his career. He would rarely score 20 points or run offense thru him

Such a well made video about one of my favorite basketball players ever! And what makes Timmy so special is what you addressed later in the video, what made him a superstar was his play, but what made him special was that selfless, real, down-to-earth, humble, we-are-one mentality, great communication, that made him the TRUE definition of a leader! You want to see prime example of leadership, not just in basketball, look at Timmy! Respect, my man!

I don't know if you'll read this but I just finished watching and I thought it was overall a great video. Tim Duncan was always my second favorite player growing up and I felt he was never getting the respect he deserved. So thank you for making this and showing what a true legend he was.
My only criticism was that you downplayed his teamates a little unfairly in the process. It's minor but to say Manu ginobili is a stretch HoF just isn't true. You credited Duncan for not caring about stats and instilling a team culture- this 100% applies to Manu. At his peak he could have be a first option an any other team.
Also its the basketball HoF, not the NBA hall of fame. He led his team to the Olympic gold medal in 2004, and was the leader of the squad. That Olympics was crazy. Going in NO ONE was expecting Argentina to win, probably not even a lot of players on their own team.. that's got to be a 100‰ lock in my eyes.
Manu is a basketball legend, an icon in Argentina and San Antonio. A magician, a big game player with a team first mindset. Thank you.

@@russellwatson3686 Manu is actually a lock for hall of fame. He has Euroleague Championships and MVPs and has a Olympic Gold Medal in addition to his NBA career. 2004 Argentina is the only non USA team to win olympics since 1992. He has a better case than Parker for sure.
They may not be first ballot but they will be in the hall of fame for sure !!!

Tim Duncan is the closest possible modern day equivalent to Bill Russell. The defense, the rebounding, the leadership, the winning, the dominance… It’s all there. What a player 🔥🔥🔥

His level of professionalism, along with his consistency is unmatched. His 'go to move', along with Kareem's sky hook, is not only one of the most recognizable, but also unstoppable.

Tim Duncan encapsulates perfectly what I pictured to be a great Basketball player growing up. Team oriented, all about winning, and was humble in defeat and victory. Him and David Robinson are my favorite duo of all time, even though I’m a Celtics fan 😂
The intangibles that push Duncan to the top of the heap is his lack of ego, selflessness, quiet confidence and determination, loyalty to his teammates and the franchise along with him just being a completely decent human being and role model.

The thing people underrate about duncan is he could defend everywhere shoot and playmake but also dribble...skills a lot of big men from back then don't have actually....he could do it all while posting up and grabbing 20 rebs

Richard Petty won 200 NASCAR races, which is absurd considering that second most wins all time is 105; however, I would heartily argue against Petty being the GOAT in NASCAR, as he competed in an era where his competition was scarce. A lack of professional teams, equipment, mechanics, etc.
Wilt was UNDENIABLY great, but to ignore how muted the play was then would be criminal. The average player just wasn’t as athletic or polished as modern players are. They weren’t held to the same standards and the understanding of the game just wasn’t there. Shooting accuracy was abysmal, the rules were still being improved, and the league was still in it’s young years. Tim Duncan was incredible for nearly 2 decades in a time when the game was at its most polished and competitive. A time when he was SURROUNDED by all time great talent from every side, and he STILL had a 71% win rate. That’s truly exceptional.

One big point that was left out was that he played in one of the smallest markets in the NBA. If he played in NY, LA, or another bigger market his legacy would have been much more. I think one stat that really stood out what his overall winning percentage in sports history. Great video!

Got to watch the spurs a lot. I lived in SA for years and it was his town. Tim Duncan was the ROCK of a championship dynasty. His skill level was off the chart. So smooth and dominant. That loss to the heat lit a fire that catapulted them to yet another title. The underlying force was TD.

Joel Kramer they are but in the history of the game they’re probably the more underwhelming of co-stars to get 4 chips with. All the other great players of Duncan’s caliber played with way better talent. Magic had kareem and worthy. Bird with McHale parish Dennis Johnson, mj had scottie and Rodman, zeke had Dumars Aguirre and those guys. Even wilt had jerry west and hal Greer. Duncan probably did the most with the least (tho parker and Manu ain’t no joke, they’re just not those guys I mentioned)
I think Manu is underrated and Parker is overrated. On a different team, Manu is scoring 20+ per game, but Parker just loses efficiency without Duncan setting ķiller screens and making prefect rolls.
Huge Celtics fan who is unashamedly biased towards them, but the one player I hold nearest to my heart and who I idolise above any other is Tim Duncan. The humility and selflessness is something I aspire to be more like. He's the model of an ideal basketball player in my eyes, and that more than anything makes me buy into Tim Duncan as the GOAT.

Shaq had MVP season, and finals MVP three straight years, horry hit clutch shots, fisher hit clutch shots, brian shaw hit clutch shots, glen rice was clutch, Artest saved the lakers in game 7, and Gasol literally gave kobe the last two rings.

Thank you for this video, I actually had chills in the second half. Tim Duncan is my favorite player ever. He always was a winner, it was never about him and he is always gave everything he had for us, the San Antonio Spurs. That's also the reason why Kawhi Leonard is my favorite player right now. I don't care what happened with us. Everytime I see Kawhi Leonard, I'm happy because he is so good without trying to be flashy or the star. And it was the same with Timmy D.
I watched all episodes. This was a tremendous, well researched, and well written series. It made me change my perspective on what greatness, and what "the greatest of all time" means. And next to Bill Russell's, I'd say this was my favorite. Cheers.

I love this video but this guy underrated Parker and Ginobli. You can't say "they weren't great cuz they only made 5 All-Star games". Both guys would've been perennial All-Stars if they were the #1 options on different teams. Ginobli never made a ton of All-Stars cuz he accepted his role of 6th man but destroyed many superstars both on offense and D. In his prime, Parker was was always top 5 among guards for FG% in the paint! In fact, Parker's skills are what allowed the Spurs to transition into the game changing "pace-and-space" offensive juggernaut from 2012-16.

It's just too bad that he didn't have a steady supporting cast. He was drafted the same year as Jordan -the consensus GOAT, and quite frankly is the only player who comes close to him, during that era. Even Jordan said if he could have one player, excluding himself, he would pick Olajuwon. So yes, he is very comparable.
The same can not be said for Wilt Chamberlain. He's in his own galaxy.
