Build custom rack. Sht gets wet but if out west doesn't rain that much. HEAVY DUTY. You will be glad. On gladiator 8 foot works for one sheet of plywood. Cut it down to 7 feet. Use round tube or bar for end and front crossbars. I used 1.5 angle for top metal ran 2x12s across, fits into angle, screwed plywood to that. It's heavy 300 pounds but I used thick metal. Aluminum is the way to go though. Expensive. 6 foot bed with tailgate gives you air mat bed. I found canvas slung over rack the best cover. And popup for tailgate sitting sun block area. I was Infantry so do duffles with contractors bags inside for bulky puffy gear. Only pain is winds. Tie down. Custom welded metal Stakes work best with loop welded on. Hatchet for hammer. Used Tundra before Gladiator. They are beasts. Hauling. Pulling. Payload. 300 pound rack didn't matter at all on it.
The cap on my Tacoma also looks like it should be a little farther forward, it is as far forward as it will go. Installer told me it's designed that way to let the bed flex without the cap hitting the cab. But then I see other caps that are much closer to the cab. This is the first review I've seen with the same situation as mine. Guess I'm getting used to it, doesn't bother me as much as when I first got it.
Thanks for sharing! I have the same Jeep and color but was thinking of going with the Back Topper.....this confirms my hunch. I don't like the color match since it already has a black top. I also am concerned about the weight but I see you have decked it....that probably impacts as well. The slight extension in the rear is about concerning as well. I think, for now, I'll keep my hard plastic tri-fold tonneau cover until they improve these...
As for the color match, Iv actually started to like it. The rear extension was due to the installer. Iv since moved it forward and it has a very nice match. Yes the decked system is about an extra 200 lbs. Iv since changed out springs and have a proper rake again.
I probably would have gone black on the top. And isn't all that slider and other things in the bed contributing to the rear end sag???? It does look good though. Really like the pop up windows
Yes, the extra wait from the Decked system and gear does add to the sag, but it definitely got much worse when we installed the topper. Since filming, I swapped out the rear 3.5” lift springs to EVO 4.5” springs. Definitely helps!
Add a ex lift brand nomad camper package to the rear of the shell and you got instant camping, sleep, etc, 6 ft 9L bed with tailgate down!! Much cheaper than a pop up wedge shell for the gladiator.
Yes, I was planning to use both the Decked system and cap together. Originally I was ordering a different cap, but shipping restrictions during the rona changed my plans.
One of the things that steered me toward the stainless steel RLD or the aluminum Alu Cab was its ability to hold significant weight ontop. Do you know the static and dynamic weight limits of the ARE canopy?
According to ARE, static is 500#. When I ordered, RLD was unable to make my timeline and Alu Cab released their Gladiator cap two weeks later. Ultimately, this is only for the short term. Planning to go with a AT Habitat for next summer.
Love this top though the reach in is a must. If it can take dust that's good. But I have seen nothing that dust can't get into. Including sand into goggles sealed to my face in Kuwait Iraq. Still got in
Truck looks great...you mentioned that your putting a rhino rack on..j assume a rooftop tent also...do u know the weight capacity of the cap..I want to go the same route but I'm hearing the weight limits are not that great.. thanks for sharing
Unfortunately, I haven’t gotten a straight answer on capacity. Since filming I did adapt my Rhino Rack. It took a little work. I’m considering putting one of my Tepuis on top, but haven’t yet. I Have used it to transport two 95lb kayaks, 45lb OZTENT RV5 and about 20lbs of MaxTraxs on two twelve hour drives and a weekend driving on the beach with no issues. That’s actually much heavier than most RTTs. Still not totally convinced that the topper can support a RTT and two people.
Originally not well. The first kit I found didn’t work. Finally I ended up ordering Rhino Rack 2” tall mounts, turning them around backwards and filing about a 16th of an inch off the mounting hardware. Now it’s close to perfect.
I’ve always loved the look of classic old school Land Rover Defenders. This look reminds me of that and I like the color match personally. My JTE is all black and I’m considering going this route now that I’ve seen yours. I have a mopar 2 inch lift on mine. I’m hoping that I don’t get the same sag that you mentioned yours to have before having to upgrade your suspension.
Thanks for the video, I'm looking to get a cap for the Gladiator I'm planning on getting. Where in PA are you? How do you like the Gladiator? What lift do you have?
OE, I think it look great. If you don’t mind me asking, With the options you have, what did it cost? Also, have you looked into color matching the hardtop? Is that something that can be done with the textured surface? Thanks for sharing.
With the options I have and installed, I paid $2900. In addition to the side windows, I added the fold down center slider and Yakima roof rack rails. According to my Jeep dealer, it would be more cost effective to sand and spray my top. Originally I was considering a new “paint ready” hard top from Mopar but the cost to benefit ratio wasn’t very convincing.
Yes, but definitely not cost effective. Iv actually grown to like the contrast. Also I added a Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform that really broke up the color.
Fantastic Review. Does ARE give a weight for this cap? I do like the overall fit and finish. And the useability is key. Keeping all your gear clean and dry is a win!
Man that looks good !! I was in limbo about a few dif caps but after watching this vid 2 times I’m sold !! What slider is that ontop of your deckit system !? Thanks
The Cap looks good but you should have match it to your hard top! I am in the market for a Gladiator but I want to test drive the Mojave since I have already done the Rubicon and since I live in FL a Rock Crawler is ok but a the Sand Capability of the Mojave might be more Fun here with all the Sugar Sand that we have! I have been configuring the Gladiator for the past 3 months and I keep going back and forth on Matching the hard top and since I want to get the Gladiator in Sting Gray to Match my 2020 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk with Hemi V8 the Matching colored Top does make it look more a finished truck when the top is on! How easy is it to take the Cap off?
Iv never been a fan of color matched hard tops. I think it takes away from the Jeep look. However on the Gladiator, it looks really good. Removing the cap only requires 4 clamps. It’s actually very simple. Definitely helps to have a second person help with lifting.
Nice vid, thx for sharing. I’m thinking of getting this and your vid is super helpful. Question: do you know if it would be easy to remove the side windows and also the rear window? I’m seeing if this would be be an option if going full convertible-mode in the cab and then removing the windows in the bed cap to match.
I really like the look of that cap on your Gladiator. She's a beauty. Is it possible to lay down in the covered area? I'm almost 6 feet tall so would most likely would need to lay across the bed.
You mentioned it is too heavy, how heavy are we talking about here? I’m thinking about getting a cap or topper for my JT as well. But when you mentioned it is two heavy that the rear end actually got pressured lower, it scares me, and also, do you think maybe it is because you have both the deck system and the cap?
the decked system weights 205lbs without anything in it. The ARE classic cap on a large long bed only weight 185lbs and im sure the gladiator is only around 145 ish. Go throw 3 50lbs bags of sand or dirt in it and that would be equivalent with the cap alone.
Yes, the decked system is right at 200 lbs and the cap is about 165 lbs. This was enough for a significant sag. It definitely depends on the suspension choices you make. I upgraded from a lesser brand “3 inch” kit and added a set of EVO 4.5” rear springs since I shot the video. Made a huge difference.
I might keep the top but 200#s for some drawers, no way. I have the RLD top and am using as light as possible storage like an aluminum box and plastic.
Unfortunately I still don’t know! They don’t give that information. Personally, I have had about 300 lbs on top during several rough trips, (sand dunes, rough trails and light rock crawling. No issues yet. I haven’t mounted my RTTs on it.
Overland Evolution thanks, I couldn’t get that option as one size I got a tool box for all my towing accessories/ straps etc. I’m more looking to see if I can put a seal around the opening to make a “air tight” passage
Should be no problem. Since filming this review, Iv adapted my 72” Rhino Rack platform and currently have about 275 lbs on top for this weekend’s adventures to Cape Lookout National Seashore. I was considering putting one of my Tepuis on top, but opted for our OZ tent for this trip. I had Yakima track rails mounted by the factory.
@@overlandevolution3141 I've been also thinking about that, but that's a problem I didn't have on my mind. But do they flex that much? Couldn't you connect those two pieces with some flexible material? Having both parts connected, with put down rear seats, would make the perfect base for a bed and you'd still have lots of storage underneath the bed. That'd be the perfect camper for me.
Possibly if you built a platform at the same level as the top of the bed and body. Flex isn’t really that bad with a full frame, but it definitely moves side to side off road. I’m sure it could be done with a little extra work.
That’s a really good question. I don’t think it will. The top has a slight lean that I think would make contact with the top rear area of the soft top. The RDL cap looks like it would work with a soft top.
That’s what I thought. looks good but I’d like to have use of the soft top. I think I am going to go with the fas-top cover/ top combo. Thanks for the reply!
That’s a really good question. Since the video, I adapted a Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform, I have done several trail days at Rausch Creek and AOAA with no issues. I will be taking it down to Cape Lookout NC at the end of the month with kayaks and two OZ Tents on top, that should be our final test.

Can you still remove the top from the gladiator with the cap on?
Yes, you can still remove the top. You will need to lift the top over the cap, or slide the cap back.
Do you think it has the ability to handle the weight of a RTT?
That’s a good question. I haven’t tried my RTT on it, but have carried two 84lb kayaks and 45lb OZ tent on top. That’s significantly more than a RTT.
what is the weight rating for your canopy tracks ?
Unfortunately ARE and my local dealer couldn’t answer that for me.
give me a cap that stretches far enough to replace the base of the hard top, and still retain the ability to youse the freedom top
