They cannot understand what our kids go through. What parents and caregivers experience. I think “romanticizing” is probably a great way to describe this. You made many valid points. Completely agree they are wasting money and time
on repeat research. We must get to roots to help our most profoundly affected kids. Excellent discussion. 💙

Why doesn't the ND movement recognize the folly of overidentification with a disorder, and arguing for their limitations? I have a lifelong severe and persistent psych disability and have lived with tons of stigmatizing labels. I don't identify with any one of them which would lock me into a sick role. I am a person living with my disorder. My potential remains intact to work around it, learn tools and continue growing. By contrast, my autistic partner uses identity-first language, and it's given him a fixed mindset with little agency or faith in his capacity to improve situations he finds himself in. This belief system is hell on his self-esteem, to say nothing of what he truly can and can't achieve.

Hi Jill! It’s me, Pam Klein! 😘❤️
You know me. I wrote an article for you right before the pandemic started.
My mom friends and I in The Rockland County, NY low functioning autism community are so sick and disgusted by individuals who have high functioning autism dictating everything in the entire autism world!!! It’s just so wrong! Our grown sons and daughters need 24/7 care and assistance and will for the rest of their lives! Us parents are their voices. You can’t even compare the lives of high functioning individuals and our reality with grown children with profound autism!

Curiously, when we started publicizing this point of view the neurodiversity movement was at its fullest and many of us were ostracized. My views were misrepresented, I was accused of trying to commit genocide (a.k.a finding a cure through research), and even received death threats. I am glad that people are better educated on the subject and receptive to the idea of severe autism. Best regards

@@manuelcasanova727 I am so thankful you continue to help us, our kids and our families. I am so sorry that you have received death threats. IDK why people are so afraid of anyone who is trying to help others. It makes no sense to me. Thank you for your advocacy.

Thank you for this very interesting conversation. I would like to hear more discussion regarding the problematic elimination of Asperger's from the diagnostic manual, which I believe has done immense damage. I consider it to be a different condition from both high functioning autism and most definitely profound autism. Thank you once again.

Sure you are right in thinking there is a difference between the two. It took me ages to understand it but the late Donna Williams believed the difference lay in the fact that those with autism are "all other - no self" while people with Asperger's are "all self - no other."
And there are many people who still refer to themselves as having Asperger's and we have to respect that.

In addition to biological research, we need pragmatic research on current models of care. For instance, outcomes for adult individuals in group homes versus ICF versus shared living types of care. It’s difficult to advocate for what our loved ones need without facts and data.

Great interview. I'd be interested in more information on the massage discussed.

Desensitization massages are well known by physical therapists. They are often used when reliving post surgical scar pain and arthritis. In China they are often used before the autistic child begins school work in order to lower anxiety and increase attention.

@@manuelcasanova727 This was an excellent discussion. If you had all the money in the world, what would you do in terms of research? What are the strongest research groups in the field of autism research?
