Fun Fact:
We actually DO see the surface of the earth in Ultrakill (technically)
In the scene at the end of act 2 where Gabriel stands before a campfire, the celetial object in the sky is actually the Earth, not the Moon.
Gabriel is sitting in the first layer (or entrance, i cant quite remember) of heaven, which in Divine Comedy is said to be on the Moon.

Cool fact! Heresy is not actually Red! Gabriel's Rage is just so powerful his angry aura has encompassed the entire layer, you can see this theory in action from the Lights in his second fase changing back to Blue/Yellow(, it's also to fit gabriels colour scheme).
Another addition to this theory is when entering Heresy the background noise sounds alot like the +ENRAGED noise.

another small detail you seem to have missed: If you take into account the ferryman's journal which states that the river styx became an ocean due to a sudden wave of sinners entering hell all at once, it makes more sense to imagine that hell is what caused humanity's extinction and not machines, as machines wouldn't have killed everyone all at once. A major catastrophic event is more likely to cause a sudden wave of deaths, and i don't think the machines would be capable. I'm also fairly certain that hakita stated machines were not the cause, but I am unable to find it
hakita didn’t technically say machines were not the cause, but he said that nowhere in the game is that implied, and he told the people who maintain the wiki to remove any reference to that from the wiki.

Well who said it happened all at once? If one ferryman brings souls to the next layer, (or whatever he does), then why couldn’t the machines have simply killed too fast for the ferryman to ferry on souls? They didn’t have to all die at once (also I agree that the machines didn’t kill the humans…)

The violence layer does so fucking much for the story it makes me get a lump in my throat. We never really get a look into the world outside of hell before then but when we do it fucking stings.
Imagine being one of those people, living in the shantytowns built on the back of the machine that scorched the entire planet, as it's locked in a stalemate with another one miles away, hurling lightning bolts at their target but never hitting one another like soldiers taking shots at the enemy trench. You don't know who the people are on the other Earthmover, you don't even know why you're even fighting eachother. Nobody is. The war had been going on for two centuries at this point and any reason for why it started is lost to time.
There have been generations born who only know war, there might have been some born on the earthmover itself who don't even know what solid ground is like. You don't know if the stalemate will end or the war will finish before what little resources remain on the back of the Earthmover eventually deplete, and the last humans die out in confusion and fear.
It's horrible. This is probably what it felt like to live during World War One, something Ultrakill draws a lot of parallels to which I'm sure was intentional.
The realisation of v1 being built to kill the earth movers still moves chills down my spine
i feel like humans eventualy got off the earth movers and relized "oh shit" and tried to better it but failed (and as wrath used to be a lot smaller water wise) something happened to kill them all at basicaly the same time, thus flooding wrath
@@abominationLlama they got off Earthmovers only when they died. Clouds of soot blocked the Sun and limited Earthmovers' access to Solar power, which caused them to die. Without Earthmovers, there was no longer anything to fight massive War with, and humans decided to unite.
It’s also very possible that The Last War was just WW1 if it went on for a long LONG time, I remember seeing that theory at one point, and that the discovery of blood’s ability to power machines was enough to keep the war on for Germany
@@thecopperandroid8989 yeah, it was confirmed on the 2nd dev commentary stream that the Final War is WW1. But obviously it wasn't named WW1 because there was no WW2.
So some cool stuff about the earthmover boss, if you look REAL far in the distance it is actually mid combat with another one but completely stops as soon as you show up. Why would it stop fighting another earthmover just cause of some small guy? Well essentially every machine throughout the war was made to counteract the previous one and the V design was cancelled for mass production due to the war ending meaning it was designed to counteract the last most powerful machine, that being the earthmovers. There are warning signs on the earthmover itself showing V1 and it stops fighting another earthmover because it knows your a greater threat, which you prove to be true.
Fun fact! Those burnt bodies in 1-2 are the VERY early versions of the Filth and Stray! (you can see the full models in the credits museum)
Also little story from my first time playing ultrakill i called the Filth "Dogs" the Stray "Bones" and the Drone "Bird" :)

The war ended because it literally could not continue. The ultimate engines of war had died, not through violence, but through slowly wasting away.
another small correction, the long night didn't knock clarity into humans, it just took away the other necessary fuel source form the earth movers which left the little remaining humanity with basically nothing to fight, and then was when the new peace was formed

funny thing the new full arsenal update confirmed the sentience in machines through a gutterman killing its fuel source and being mournful of it with the poem "mother mother of me" being found in 7-2 (you can find that same gutterman without a casket in the ambush of the train after you get the bomb)
Correction: the hitscan maurices shoot are actually parryable, you just need the point blank punch. An interruption, on the other hand, is when you kill an enemy right as they fire a projectile, including hitscans.
Correction about second v2 fight. Hakita confirmed the text was to so players doesn’t get confused and thought he just ran of like last time. It is not canon.

One tiny correction, the fishing level is actually connected to wrath as a sin, because it's a cozy game that calms people down

I think panopticon is not much different from flash prison in terms of security because it doesn't have healing orbs. Why? Idk, maybe cuz heaven was so afraid of sisyphus that instead of securing sisyphus himself, they decided to secure his panopticon as high as possible putting 4 large doors and 5 ways of cybergrind to slow down the escape of king and eventually ran out of budged, so they couldn't afford healing orbs.
Or it's just Hakita trolling us since he said himself that putting tons of hardest rooms with lots of enemies before the boss seemed to be a pretty fun idea to him.
So just remember what max0r said: "P-ranking the game was not a test, *it was a warning"*
fp does have healing orbs tho, shipthefish prime just kills it before it can use them
also I doubt that heaven would have a "budget" for things or even really payment for the angels in any way because they don't need it
Panopticon wasn't (to my understanding anyway) meant to actually hold Sisyphus inside, none of P-2 was. Instead, P-2 was meant to keep everything else out. It's why there's a whole level instead of just the prison/Prime Soul.
My theory is that the Panopticon was meant to keep Sisyphus in stasis, it's why he easily breaks out and then says something along the lines of "I have slumbered long enough". Prison was meant to actually hold Minos, stopping his Prime Soul from forming, Panopticon was a stopgap measure as Sisyphus had already formed as a Prime Soul. That's why he breaks out after you deal enough damage/spend enough time fighting the Panopticon, you essentially wake him up. None of the angels or the Council knew how powerful a Prime Soul could be, so they did everything they could to stop them. If they had a budget, I would be willing to bet that 100% of that budget would go to stopping Prime Souls if they had a surefire way.

small addition- the level challenges and secrets actually do give you a bit more than pretty gold levels! completing a level challenge will unlock that level's ost for your ingame cyber grind playlist, and finding soul orbs will unlock more color schemes for your weapons

did you know using the attractor nailgun instantly charges the overheat nailgun to full heat? Pretty cool way for hakita to encourage swapping variations
1:11:14 in the Cybergrind playlist that part is actually "Hall of Sacrileligious Remains", a reference to name of 1-3.
Here's a funny little piece of advice. I found that the attractor nailgun is actually pretty good at taking out street cleaners. You place a magnet spike near them, then you fire nails at them. The nails fire fast enough that they can't dodge them very easily. Firing enough nails will attract them to the spike, completely immobilizing them. You can kind of just ignore them at this point and let the nails do the work. It's not an instant kill like the coin, but it is easier to pull off.
it could be possible to connect the Earthmovers to violence against art if you consider the cities of man art, I think? Like- if the cities were so utterly destroyed that people were forced to inhabit the very thing that burned their homes, that could be violence against art by the way you explained it. Thanks for going so in depth about the connections to Dante, i plan to read the book but i haven't yet so it's really cool to get such a thorough dive into the themes and connections! Hell becoming sentient, like a cancer cell growing without control, is so cool. God i love this game

Now that the update is out, how do you feel about the new weapons?
@@ElectroMage1821 red shotgun is nice for healing on Sisyphus, red rocket is really not that useful outside of few scenarios, and i only really use red nailgun around sawtraps. Though all the weapons are made creatively.

I would say this video essay of Ultrakill is probably the best I’ve watched so far, It covers much of the game and what makes it so popular and fun.
I really hope to see people who were interested in the game after watching both of Maxor’s Ultrakill videos react to this video as it will definitely cement any interest they had in the game and may buy and play it themselves.

Something about the sharpshooter that i dont know many people that know about is the fact that if you have enough of them (using the duel upgrade multiple times), then spin it and jump, you can actually fly. It's the funniest shit ever

A detail I find interesting is the rank mechanic causing players to quickly and almost franticly search for things to kill, much like the machine would be doing itself.
The trans colors on the weapons really makes you feel like an Ultrakill player
brutal is actually such a nightmare but in such a good way every level you beat in it makes the standard version feel like a cakewalk
