Last 20 years have restored the faith, though stray incidents did happen. 3 Pakistan top players, amir, Asif and Salman butt were banned because of spot fixing. Just an example.

So, now it's known that fixers have focused on low profile games played by low profile players or teams, with not many watching such matches it has been safer easier for them to get away & apparently big money is put on bets over such low profile matches making spot fixing more likely to take place.

You can get banned for missing out on that too, and it happened recently too. The sport has become professional to the point that any grey areas like that aren't tolerated. Nowadays people just bet, but it's tricky in places where betting is illegal like India, so it's automatically labelled under match fixing. So legalising betting in such countries can allow you to impose stricter laws on match fixing.
To be honest there have been cases in Cricket where the Matches were fixed that is the reason even an IPL Chennai got banned because there was a suspicion of fixing the only time it happened in Indian international cricket was when captain named Mohammed Azaruddin fixed a match and got caught and got banned for life, it is most prevalent in Pakistan team and West Indies but recently they have been very strict with match Fixing even players have been jailed that’s why call it is very rare

There have been heaps of scandals over the years. CSK and the Rajasthan Royals were both banned from the IPL for 2 years because of "betting activities". Plus a hell of a lot of others around the world.

ICC watches betting trends and can usually track these down, and punishments for the players are severe.
Three Pakistan Players were caught cheating in a test match against England in 2009, including the team captain. Two of the players Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir were at their peak as fast bowlers. Amir served a five year ban, has come back but Asif is banned for life probably which is a bigger loss given his talent and skill.
