  • On this flight, I ferry a 1971 Piper Cherokee from Kentucky to North Carolina. One of the benefits of having a commercial rating is that you get to exercise privileges like this in being compensated to fly. This is a great way to make some money (legally) as a pilot, and to build time.

I own a 1972 with Garmin 430W and a S-Tec 30. Great plane for my son and I to time build. Love the extra horsepower power and useful load and I too love the throttle quadrant. It’s Like the big boys!

Nice landing, and great shots of the panel. Love the landing checklist. The switched ADS-B, not so much.

@@JermaineBibb you’re welcome! Did you happen to calculate fuel burn per hour on that flight? For comparison? Also I saw you pull pretty good to get it off the ground. Mine is the same. The archer wing however just flies off the ground when it’s ready. I wish we had an Archer for the extra leg room but hey I am not complaining

I think it burned around 9 gal/hour at 2400 RPM. I made good time though with a nice tailwind. It took a little pull to get off the ground but once that airspeed started to climb, so did the plane. Love pipers. I fly a lance too with some nice leg room.

Beautiful up above that cloud deck and beautiful views taking off! But... that's some unfriendly terrain below through a lot of the route. I've been in that area below the first 1/3rd of the route - amazingly beautiful area but specifically because it's full of cliffs and hollers. No airports there because there's nowhere flat enough! Then the sectional makes that middle third clear that it's rough terrain. On one hand, extending the route ups some risks and costs a bit of time, wear and fuel. Did you consider something like a zig-zag/dog leg route to stay over as many airports as possible versus going direct? I ask because I very much know I can overthink things versus the advantages "keep it simple."

I agree, the terrain looked very unfriendly from a distance. I pre planned 7,500 ft to ensure that I cleared the terrain. Since I was VFR I was able to maneuver as I pleased to my comfort to avoid terrain.
I must admit, as I got closer to the terrain I can tell that it was not going to be an issue. Plenty of airports to the north and south of the terrain, which I noticed during my planning just in case something happened. I try to stay ahead of everything when on these missions, or flying in general.

Bought a 68 Cherokee 180 during my private training 18 months ago. Great plane, all the stability of a Cherokee but more power and faster cruise than the 140 variants. Loved watching this trip, were you able to solve the issue with the transponder? Cool that they were able to manually identify you and tag you up just by having you make that 30 degree turn.

It's been a while since I've flown a 180 and I completely forgot how powerful they were! I had a tailwind the entire flight so it made the trip a lot better. ATC was able to pick me up eventually. My audio cable adapter was not secure so my audio went out mid flight.
I'm glad they was able to make it work too. I was comfortable either way, but can't never go wrong with a little flight following. Thanks for watching!

Reach out to Airplane Brokers and get on their ferry list.

I bet the issue is the transponder was on ON not ALT...I have one of those museum pieces in my 1960s C150

    • @JermaineBibb
      @JermaineBibb  5 месяцев назад +1

I figured that. I was cycling through each setting and I eventually ended up changing to ATL and one of the centers was able to see me.
At one point I pressed the IDENT button too many times and ATC called me out on it lol. So I was like, “Yupp the see me” lol
      Thanks, man!

When I flew through KLEX they had problems picking up my transponder as well… everyone I got passed off to had it though. Not sure what’s up with that

How do you like the lightspeed head sets! Better than Bose to you?

I’ve only had lightspeed. I really like Bose too though. Can’t go wrong either way. IMO.
