    👋 About Me 👋
After a successful business career where I've started and sold a number of companies, I've decided to get out from behind my computer to pursue a lifelong passion and start career 2.0 as a professional pilot. My goal is to get to 1500 hours and then either work for a large regional, a major, or possibly even cargo. Once my flight training is done, I will work as an independent CFI until I have reached the 1500 hours needed to get hired by one of the above. You can learn more at www.FlyWithTrent.com.

Summer of 1974, at age 21, I had 300 hours. I found out about Floair in Wichita. They were the largest ferry service in the 70’s, when GA planes were going all over the world. Singles and twins. I called them, said how hungry I was and was hired over the phone! Every time they gave me a single, they’d ask “have you flown this type?” My answer was always yes😉. Every Cessna single I was assigned, had .2 hours in the tach. To get airworthiness certificate, they did engine run for 12 minutes, and not flown😳. 150, 150 Aerobat, 172, Cardinal, 182, 185, 206, 210, even an Ag Truck! I never had any engine failures. Mostly, I would fly them to New Orleans. They were crated, and sent to Europe, Africa, South America, Australia and New Zealand. The twin guys would ferry all over the world-they were so good! For 3 months, I flew about 300 hours. This really helped, as I never got my CFI. Ferrying can be fun and good for time building. Networking is what it takes.

Great, informative video and interview. Trent, I recently came across your channel and am enjoying the content you are creating and sharing. I’m a 62 year old that spent my last 18 years as a sales professional in financial services. Before that I was a Flight instructor (let that expire in 1994), 135 cargo charter pilot and after 9/11/2001 found myself downsized and left the aviation industry completely. Well here I am at 62 as mentioned and I just successfully completed my CFII. My plan is to start an aircraft brokerage, management, and training company. Interviews like you are doing are inspiring for all pilots looking to explore the many options to work within the industry. Thank you.

I had no idea what a ferry pilot was before this. I thought it was to ferry passengers back and forth in the back country for trips. After watching this it. Sounds like so much fun. I’m one of the weirdos who would look forward to flying over the Rockies for the first time.

I’m at the very beginning of my 2.0 journey, have been a yacht captain for 11 years and for the past few have specialized in “yacht ferrying”-we call them “deliveries” or “delivery captains/skippers”. Loved the interview. When I was a kid, I wanted to be an AF Test Pilot when I grew up. In 5th grade, I got glasses, and that dream disappeared. I've flown with others from time to time who invited me to join them in their small planes. It was a lot of fun, and I've often said I'll get my license "someday" ... but it's a very expensive hobby and I really haven't given it much thought over the years.
But for some reason, after turning 67 this summer, I've started looking at these videos and am thinking of learning to fly just because ... maybe it's time. I'm semi-retired now working on my own startup (I'm a software developer) and I want to get that going and cash-out before I turn 70, which is in ... OMG ... less than 3 years! Yikes! Where does the time go? The person looking out my eyes thinks he's 25, although my body isn't as limber as it was back then. I'm not interested in getting certified to fly large aircraft. Also, I had a heart attack in 2011 and may not be able to pass any medicals, although I'm quite healthy and have had no problems since they put a stent in. I don't know why they want you to be able to run for 9 minutes without your HR or BP going berserk tho ... do they expect you to run like hell away from a crash site to save yourself?
All that said, I love watching these videos that talk about all of the non-traditional opportunities to fly. I know there's no age limit on flying except a few situations, and I'm curious what opportunities might be available that nobody is really looking at. For me, it would just be fun and a way to keep my mind active. I don't know if anybody would want to hire me just for that; most employers seem to want people who will stick around for the long-haul, which is why it's nearly impossible for me to find work today in my own field. So i've gotta create my own opportunity. Keep showing these oddball ways people are basically getting paid to fly!
I learned to program at 14 as a Sophomore in HS. I liked it but really wanted to be an EE, so that's what I got into in College. But programming for me was like playing word puzzles, and one day it dawned on me that I can get paid really well to spend my days solving word puzzles, so I that's what I decided to do. Here we are 40+ years later, and ... well ... I've always wanted to fly, and I'm trying to figure out how to get paid to have fun flying now. But this time it's not for a career, just something I've always wanted to do. :)
@trent_dyrsmid How about interviewing some people who started up flight schools? I'm thinking ... what would it take to get a small fleet of Pipistrels and/or Birstells and set up a small school?
I'm also curious about buying a plane and leasing it back to a school. Or using that approach to build a fleet in a school. I'm curious about that business model. (I just found out that my neighbor has a close friend who owns a flight school here in town, I should go talk with him, eh?)
From all indications, the aviation industry is in for 10-20 years of really solid growth, especially as battery-powered aircraft start to come on the scene. Oh, to be 40 again and have 30+ years ahead of me!

Am heading to the US for about a month or 6 weeks in the Spring to try to smash out my PPL. Doing Sportys ground school before then. Not sure where to go yet, but found a place just north of Washington DC that does pretty intensive programs as needed, looks ok.

Question: Can an individual start a business and higher qualified pilots to do the ferrying, without being qualified to do the actual flying themselves and/or without being commercial rated?
Practical Application: Holds current ratings, but not commercial. Wants to build a business in aviation industry and get started before eligibility for hire.
