I heard that marigolds are good between tomatoes keeps the little bugs away and also basil too. Like three sisters. Also another 3 sisters that work well together is corn with beans the ones that grow tall and will attach to the corn and pumpkin their big leaves keep shade to the ground and keep it moist.

Yes and the zuchinni can be grated, placed in freezer bags measured for the recipe. No blanching required. And last winter when I was baking zuchinni bread, I found a recipe that stated to not drain the thawed zuchinni. It makes the bread more moist and I have to say it was delicious. My friend spiralizes her zuchinni and uses it like pasta under marinara sauce.

My fav zucchini recipe (courgette) I learnt in a French restaurant and I keep making it as it’s so yum, is to slice two medium sized zucchini into half centimetre width slices (ish) and cook in a fry pan with butter and sage leaves then when browned and soft, add cream and mash gently. A rough mash is fine. Only add enough cream so you get a soft mashy consistency. It’s easy to add too much. Season with salt and pepper during the cooking and taste test often 😁.

When you have old bread this is handy. The large courgettes (marrows) are nice as a pudding. Line your pie dish with your pie crust & blind bake it.
Cut the marrow in half, peel & scrape out the seeds then cut into small squares. Also cuts the bread (crusts are good) into equal size cubes. Put the marrow in a saucepan without any liquid & cook until soft. Add bread, stir through & add sugar & cinnamon to taste. Add some bread crumbs on top & toast under the grill. Custard or ice cream goes well with it or have it as is.
Some people don't put it in a pie crust, add less sugar & have it as a sweetish veg. dish.

I planted all my veg in pots this year. I had a huge metal wash tub and planted eggplants. I had no idea how big the plants get. I may have massively underestimated the room I'd need.
I love sweet breads/cakes baked in a loaf pan. Courgettes absolutely make the best sweet bread. If you pick your courgettes, run them through the food processor, and freeze the veg in freezer bags, you'll have enough for bread for a year. Lemon verbena is supposed to be good as a sachet for drawers and cupboards. 🤷🤷🤷
I envy your growing season. Usually by October (sometimes September) we have our first serious freeze. Though the climate is changing, we have no way to guess whether we'll get an early snow or a long Autumn. Our growing season didn't warm up at night until the end of May.

Move your echinaceas to the side of the garden or a neglected part of your property and create a pocket meadow to free up space in the beds. They are a wildflower native to the central prairies of the US. Let the seed heads dry and just broadcast them and you’ll have plenty for when you have the time to make salves.

You are fortunate. In the USA, the squash bugs are so bad, we are lucky to get 3 corgettes from a plant before it's decimated, either by squash bugs or vine borers. The only way to get a decent harvest is to constantly resow seeds, throughout the season.

Just watched your most recent video about your garden-impressive!!!
You are doing a great job!
Just wanted to caution you that when cats use an area as a bathroom, there are microscopic bugs from them that can get in your skin and cause massive itching! It’s called “creeping eruption” here in the south and it has to be dealt with by a doctor to get rid of it.
I used to get it as a child when the cats used my sandbox as a toilet-so beware. Wash your hands thoroughly and be sure to wear stout gloves when puttlng your hands in the soil-and don’t go barefoot outside.
Enjoy your videos very much! Am subscribed.
I live in Florida so the weather here is similar to yours and I can sympathize with you about the heat!
    Good luck!

Calendula is good for eating, balms, and pollinators. Yarrow (native ir not) brings in all sorts of pollinators and predator insects, dries well.
Flowers with a trumpet shape are good for butterflies, some are edible as well.
Nasturtium flowers, edible, peppery, as are the leaves and green seed pods. Allysum makes a good "ground cover" as well as bringing in native bees. Climbing beans do both, feed you and insects.

🤣Courgettes the veg growers abundant gift. Courgette cake is delish, courgette pakoras, and courgette noodles to name of a few, yes, if you see them small, don't leave more than a few days, they will turn to marrow size, but they are great if you want to keep the carbs down, instead, or with spaghetti and sauce of choice. Looking good! Envious of your peppers, and your aubergines are huge! Calcium and iron deficiency can cause yellow leaves on toms too. Leeks if you are growing any, few left to go to seed usually over winter, gives the bees a wonderful globe of yumminess in spring. Love bergamot, calendula, marigolds, lavender, dahlias, saffron crocuses. There are many you can plant for colour, smell, eat & for your insect friends. Just given up my allotment of 9 years, as too much for one person. Lovely to see you both growing such lovely veg!! Enjoy the fruits of your labour.

Zinnias are fantastic in the veg garden. They're very tough, come In a variety of colors and sizes, and will reseed which is a bonus in my book. If they sprout in an inconvenient place nextvyear you can dig up and move when plants are young. Zinnias grow very well in hot climates. I'm in Texas and they've been a lifeling fave as my grandfather always grew them and I know they grow in Italy. A friend was there recently and posted pics on FB so you should grow them with ease in Portugal.

Firstly I want to say that your Portuguese pronunciation is very good in fact you sound like a Portuguese person from Madeira. The other thing is about onions. My grandmother on my father's side lived in a place in Portugal called Tinhela it is in Valpacos a few km's from Chaves but very close to Spain. I think the type of onion was Galega ie from Galicia Spain which is almost across the road. Well, my grandmother had onions that were the size of a human head almost and so crispy and fresh even days after being in the fridge and uncovered. I think those onions are the best growing ones in Portugal. My grandmother was pretty old already at the time and had a patch of land about 100m in length and a few metres wide, she didn't seem to do too much work on it but the things I saw her pick from there were amazing in fact I have a photo somewhere that I took of her with a huge basket full which she placed on her head with all sort of things green peppers etc everything huge. I know the area had volcanic springs and what I can remember was that the topsoil was almost white but under that, it was almost pitch black.

In Virginia, we grew peanuts in our red clay soil They thrived, and we had roasted, boiled peanuts for a long time. 7 children, 2 parents. I’m 84 and the only one left in my family. Watching you two is just so comforting.🎉

Have you tried pickling them like you would cucumbers? Also make bread out of them. I made huge amounts of that one year and froze it. I have a chest freezer and keep a lot of things from the garden in it prepped and ready for meals. Stuffing the larger ones works too.

This is the first year that I made an effort with flowers in my garden. 100% worth the minimal effort. They are beautiful and a surprise everyday. Keep up on deadheading and they bloom all season. From San Diego, California, zone 10b. Your channel is a pleasure, thank you!

I don't know anything about how and when to harvest them but you can eat courgette flowers and they are super delicious! You can use them in Petits Farcis (stuffed vegetables from Provence) and I have eaten them in Oaxaca (Mexico) as a fried version on a Quesadilla for example. I'm sure there are loads of other recipes.

I have a canned zucchini relish that is delicious. It's almost like a bread and bitter pickle. The rule is one zucchini plant per family. Grilled zucchini dressed with fresh mint and white basalmic vinegar is an Italian classic. Lemon verbena meatballs are a good use of verbena. I use Jerry Traunfelds recipe. Too many vegetables is a good problem to have.

*Kylie & Guy, you both have 'green fingers' as you have grown some awesome crops. Plant Marigolds as they help to keep the bugs away 🙂.*

Suggestion for labelling: I use wooden tongue depressors and a permanent marker.
    Chemists/pharmacies should sell them.
Cut the depressors in half at a 45 degree angle giving points making it easier to put in the soil.
Can use them twice ( writing on both sides ) and they are
    Bio-degradable.
