- Former NHL goalie - Gary "Suitcase" Smith reveals how he came to be known as the goalie who wanted to score a goal. This interview with him was for my iTunes documentary film, "The California Golden Seals Story." This particular clip didn't make the final cut but I'm share it here.

Lived in a townhome near me when he played for the North Stars. As kids we rang his doorbell all the time for autographs. Nice guy.
I always liked this guy so much. He was a good goaltender and a real character. Loved watching him play.
I remember when Gary Smith played for the Chicago Blackhawks. He played well but was traded after only two seasons!
He and Esposito shared the Vezina in '71-'72.
He played net for Canucks in their first winning season, and beat Montreal for their first ever playoff game win. He was entertaining.
One of his forays to center ice can be seen on RUclips in the 3rd period of a Feb. 1970 game at Toronto.
I'll have to look for that but I believe that is the one that they used on the opening montage starting in 71 for a few years.... God I loved HNIC... Growing up in the Buffalo area in the 60s and 70s I was able to get it on our antenna and B/W tv. Weds on CTV channel 9 and Sat on CBC Channel 6 which was changed to 5 in the mid 70s
@@BandRandomOrder -Here's the full game but another channel has it posted period by period if you want to go right to the 3rd period to find Smitty's foray.

Thanks man... I'll watch tonight. I miss seeing people in the stands
@@BandRandomOrder ..your speaking my language there bud! Grew up in NF Ont. in the 60's-70's and was glued to the CBC on Sat. nights for all the Leaf home games..even better however was when my dad and uncle (who married a Buffalo gal) would take me to a Sabres game at the Aud ! Those 70's teams were great, Gil, Crozier; Gare, Luce etc etc..still to this day I'm a Sabres fan..just because of those childhood memories..
@@adgo22 I gotcha man... I'll tell ya the game is sure different now. My son and I are Jonesing to be able to cross the border to see some Grimsby Peach Kings games... For Jr C they can kick the crap out of "Junior A" teams down here
The original Seals uniforms were wonderful...very artsy-California. Finley wrecked the team in every way imaginable.
Ya, sure. Those old 'rainbow' uniforms would have gone over well if they were the San Francisco Golden Seals. White spray painted skates and all. Shudder.
I agree Don 👍
An excellent net-minder and a helluvan entertainer! Once at the Pacific Coliseum, Vancouver, he came to about the blueline to clear a bouncing puck - he punted it high in the air into the opposition's end - how often do you see that!?!
That was totally awesome! I can still picture seeing Smitty doing that .
I love that guy! 😊❤️
Love Suitcase..! Warrior of a goalie and a great story teller..that's Chris Worthy however @2:55 not Smitty..I always thought the goalies didn't have to wear those colored skates Charlie O' got for the team..I was wrong.. 3:01-3:12...Classic look..I remember the Blues and Penguins had em too..
He was definitely one of my favourites, loved the guy too.
I remember watching that game and cheering him on big time!. One time he kicked the puck like a football lol He was quirky ,but a fantastic goaltender.
This documentary for sale anywhere? Have a piece of Gilles Meloche Seals jersey in a card....
My favorite goalie of all time.
He's come full circle no more wild curly hair now he looks like he did when he was much younger.
If that's the unused, then the used is spectacular.
Gretzky said he used to wear 13 pairs of socks??So he could wear bigger skates
Goalie can’t cross over the red line.
Back then they could
