Knock down the buildings that are not listed that have been vacant for over 5 years. By slowly knocking the buildings down that tenants don't want be in then it won't look so run down and there won't need to be so much maintenance on empty buildings
Its simple. It's so simple the town planners need sacking. Free parking. Zero rates for businesses. A maximum of 3 of the same businesses aloud. Except pubs bars clubs. And wham! Plus fine the council 50k for every empty building over 3 months. And what happened to the market house is beyond disgusting.
Grew up in Dewsbury in the 60s early 70s it was a great place to be a child very safe and when the streets were full of shoppers and the market was the best around with busses bring people from all over. We left for Canada in 1976 honestly I’ve never been when I see these videos it’s heartbreaking to see the boarded up shops no theatres now no baths the library is now boarded up and the Market is nothing to write home about anymore. I still have friends and family there and the people of Dewsbury that I know are the salt of the earth my Daughter is visiting as I type this last night she was in the Townhall and sent pictures I must say it beautiful inside but I wish I could say that about the streets.
I was in the crowd outside the town hall when they arrested the Yorkshire ripper in 1981, he went in and out of the door near the bottom corner of the town hall 28:40 which was the entrance to the magistrates court then
It was a womnderful town in the 70 and 80s, but decline set in when Thatcher started ripping the country to shreds, lots of post industrial towns are similar. The local council gets blamed, but given their budget has been slashed by 42%, it is hard to hold them responsible. Given the change in shopping habits it is to be expected that retail is dying. There were 3 cinemas when I was a kid, now none, there is nothing left to go there for. NB: what you call the 'flyover' is the railway line.
Yes I've done a whole video on it. I remember the labour council at the time turning down funding from the government for a computer training scheme. Wonder how different things would of been then.
Help me! The building to the left of M&S/Peacocks (when looking towards M&S) - what was it? I think it was a bank - I was thinking Barclay's, but you showed where Barclay's is. I too remember Spectrum and the arcade over the road. I'd completely forgotten about the chippy on Union Street - I guess I went to The Mermaid more. I'm 47 and remember the old layout and the new ring road being built. Me and my mates used to sat on the ring road wall overlooking town before the road opened - it was a big drop - security clearly wasn't what is it today! I was in Dewsbury a few weeks ago for the first time in ages. Went to Gresham's cafe opposite the market - now Cafe Mon Ami. Really good experience, nice people, nice food, best cup of tea I've had in ages. Thanks for the video.
Hardship project , when I was a lad used to be Halfords, on daisy hill there used to be hodgesons department store, joe banana's, dewbury model and camera centre etc Union street used to have some great shops including a 3 story toy shop, fish and chip shop scope, an amusement arcade that you walked down in to
I think what you called the conservative club used to be the Dewsbury Trades Club, I used to go to a chess club that was held there back in the 80's. Can remember the roller rink near Union Street where I first played Dragon Slayer which I think was one of the first laser disc games, used to go to Bonnies Chinese. Worked the markets as well with my parents, saw a video of the market recently sad to see how it has become a shadow of its former self, as there used to be bus trips to dewsbury Market. The snooker hall in the pioneer building was called the pot black. Its over 35 years since I was last in Dewsbury
I used to have a girlfriend in Dewsbury about 10 years ago and I can easily say it is one of the most intimidating places to be in at night that I have been to.
It's like a lot of places; used to be good, still has potential, but allowed to go to rack and ruin by little or no investment and lack of official interest. England: Twinned with Hasbro.
I just wanna something. Is it always empty of people like this. Why there is no life there. Not crowded at all. Please can you answer me cuz I am goona be soon there
Because as I said In the video, it's really hard to get to if you don't have a car and if you have a car you're going to Leeds or the White Rose. Nothing here to bring people in.
7:34 THE LONG BUILDING IN FRONT OF YOU THAT WAS THE CLUB AND INSTITUTE CLUB ON OATES STREET MY SISTER HAD THE RECEPTION THERE WHEN SHE GOT MARRIED I USED TO GO INTO THE BIN LID PLAY ON VIDEO GAMES AND FRUIT MACHINES
What would you do?

Yes it's funny the place the councilors work in is the only decent place anymore. I hope your daughter has a lovely time.

Yes I said in the premiere I'd forgotten to mention it. My mate tripped him up 😆

Probably best leave it in your memories
Kiddies Kingdom was previously a supermarket back in the 80's
was also a "Mikes Carpets" store at one time
I think it was safeways
I used to have a girlfriend in Dewsbury about 10 years ago and I can easily say it is one of the most intimidating places to be in at night that I have been to.
It's not good during the day either
We owned the newsagents on wellington road that was next to the old library, such sad days to see it in the state it is now.
Very sad
It was a fantastic town but has gone for good it needs closing permanently it' breaks my heart to see it like this
I think it's head that way
That 25 million is disappearing into a select number of back pockets mate, never to be seen again.
Nothing new there
The cinema at the flyover was The Ritz, also became the ritz bingo hall
Cheers
Good mooch about👍👊

Should go back to the old Dewsbury Council we don't & never did need the corrupt Kirklees Council
That would help. Local government
