  • Drone footage captured a river of red-hot lava snaking downhill from a new fissure of the Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma, which burst open late on Thursday north of the primary eruption site.
    Multiple vents have opened since the volcano began erupting on Sept. 19 but the Canaries Volcanology Institute described the latest opening as a new "focus of eruption."
    About 6,000 people have been evacuated since the eruption began and are yet to return home. More than 800 buildings including houses, churches, and schools have been destroyed.
    Meanwhile, fine ash from the explosive crater, picked up by the winds, forced islanders to don masks and goggles.

      WHERE SUNDONTSHINE if you don't live on a active volcano you are usually exempt of having lava in your living room. Yes, it's sad but it's also somewhat a locational choice. Every choice is a trade off. PROS: you get to live on a paradise island. CONS: it's an active volcano that is know to go off and has done say not too long ago.
      We don't always control our environment but we do control what we expose ourselves to. For many it's simply worth the risk. I'm a mountaineer and a climber. My hobby could easily kill me yet I still choose to climb. It's a personal choice.

    As a science aficionado, I would like to see close up of lava interactions with the ocean. Also notice how the lava follows the natural curvature of hills and valleys. I wonder if given advanced time, could you build a trench wide and high enough to control the lava path? Would it be an ethical question to try to protect or sacrifice someone's property?

    • @lordomacron3719
      @lordomacron3719 2 года назад +2

      while yes we could build trenches and we have in many places this does assume that the path of the lava can be predicted before an eruption. as this video show there is always the chance of secondary vents opening anywhere. So yes management of events such as these can be done but there can never be 100% reliable and really are only there to buy time for evacutaions and such.
