La Palma volcano: Drone video shows devastated island engulfed by black lava

- Drone footage taken over the past two days showed swathes of charred land engulfed by lava in La Palma, Spain, capturing a comprehensive bird's eye view of the extent of devastation from the Cumbre Vieja volcano eruption, which shows no sign of ending.
Streams of lava have laid waste to more than 1,833 acres of land and destroyed almost 2,000 buildings on La Palma since the volcano started erupting on Sept. 19.
There were 42 seismic tremors on the island on Sunday, the largest of which measured 4.3, according to the Spanish National Geographical Institute.
About 7,000 people have been evacuated from their homes on the island.

I hope everyone on the island stays safe
Too bad they did not start at the top and show the various paths to the sea to show how the lava flowed, instead of disjointedly bouncing all over the place.
Be thankful you have this footage.

I agree. They could have done it in the edit even or just had a little corner map tracking the position.
It’s drone footage
People take too much for granted nothing is permanent.. the earth is just cycling ❤️
It's amazing how little has burned compared to the volcanoes in Hawaii. Brick buildings instead of wood?
Yes, all the buildings are brick and concrete
It does help, but it won't save the homes/businesses completely. Nobody have seen the full force of one of these. The worst part is how they change weather.
Fascinating and devastating at the same time...and very scary
Sad but part of the natural cycle of life and our planet.
The only thing that makes me sad are all the gases that went into the atmosphere all the rest I don’t really care although I live in Spain
@@Urria110 the gases & smoke clouds actually provide a small protection from the suns rays - reflecting them back to space in turn helping cool the planet. Its only when multiple volcanoes erupt across the globe does the amount of gases etc cause any warming issues.
@@damiencondo7187 not only sulfur monoxide is poured into the air but many other gases which are green house gases ,it’s true sulfur monoxide cools the earth but many other gases from the volcano do contribute to green house effect for example water vapor and carbon dioxide .

Who‘s estimate ? Do you have a source link ?

The strangest thing is that it almost seems like there were few bush fires! I can imaging the entire island being on fire.
When the lava flows over the trees etc they burn up inside the lava and disappear so you see some smoke but little fire. The lava is over 1000F
@@donnacsuti4980 They catch fire from being close proximity to the lava too though. Maybe the trees are well spaced or aren't the type to burn easily? Or there isn't enough burnable materials on the ground to spread the fire? Or maybe it's too cold there for fires to propagate properly?
Those are my guesses.
I live in Australia and it doesn't take much to start fires in the summer. Lava would definitely do it, given sparks can.
@@KyuubiSam It doesn't really get cold there, today is 22C. It is the very beginning of the rainy season there and they've had rain recently, due for more tonight.
@@shammydammy2610 Oh that sounds nice.
I've also learned since, that the main plantation there is bananas, which don't burn very well.
But I'd think they'd be more localised to areas, and not spread far and wide across the island, especially all along the lava path.
So are we thinking the explanation is just that there isn't enough flammable things to start fires?
@@KyuubiSam The island is quite small, and much of it is taken up by volcanic mountains/hills. The bananas are in a fringe around the caldera...where the soil is best...and where there IS soil.
This just doesn't want to stop
Apart from the lava, they still have to remove tons of ash....

It confounds me why people chose to build homes and towns in the vicinity of an active volcano. Don't they study the area before they proceed?
About 15% of the global human population lives near enough to active/dormant volcanoes. I think people get what they're given and try to make the best of it. Then you get generations having a connection to the land that they don't want to separate from.
@@KyuubiSam but it still doesn't make sense. I know sometimes people can't help where they live but if you want your people to have security for future generations have common sense if you have a choice. There seem to be prosperous people on Las Palma's, so maybe its just ignorance. I'm willing to be enlightened.
@@suemurray9431 I think it's actually very beautiful there, probably worth the risk by those who first bought land there, especially if it was cheap. It seems to be declared "world biosphere reserve" by UNESCO.
It seems as though their main economic income is produce, trade, and tourism. The produce mainly being bananas, with a minority of other fruit/veg that gain and lose popularity over the years. The tourism seems to only be prevalent in certain times of the year.
Seems like unstable income, subject to many outside influences including weather.
Then, like I said, generations feel connected to it and want to stay, especially if they are the farmers tending to the crops of their family and helping to keep the island from suffering economic collapse.
This volcanic event has probably been devastating, not just for loss of homes but loss of crops and keeps tourists (except for those who want to see the volcano) away. But I'm guessing it will still be a very beautiful place, probably worth sticking for.
Lets pray for them because this eruption is increasing in intensity instead of decreasing

Harvest the remaining banana crop. Sell them off as Lava Bananas, charge 10 times the regular price to help the recovery of the island. There's a crazy world out there that would gladly pay for La Palma Lava Bananas.
Sadly I read that Europe won't let them sell the banana if it has ash on it, even though there's nothing wrong with the banana. It's hard to clean the ash off so much of to his years crop is likely not going to be sold.
They might as well sell the ash itself for fertilizer.
Sadly, the bananas have been damaged by the heavy fall of ash.

evil, and hides himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished."
I don't see any heartbreak in this it's a volcano it's natural it's nature that's what volcanoes do they grow. So if you're going to build on an active volcano don't cry when it goes off it's just natural you have to known it was going to happen sooner or later. And now that it has you just get deal with it you chose to live there now you're paying the price just deal with it after all you claim the volcano as your own well own it.
I agree to a point. If people look closely they'll see past lava flows that have and are being greened over, evidence that it's not a good idea to establish anything there.
The residents and businesses have still been suddenly displaced and lost everything suddenly though.
@@cycleSCUBA there's nothing wrong to agree to disagree that's how we learn yeah I don't believe the lava is going to hurt anybody other than material. But that being said that is the worst Island you could be on right now because of the ash the fine particulate breathing that in your lungs is going to take years off your life. And the sad part is it's going to show up when you're elderly at best you'll have just pulmonary problems. But most likely you'll be on a ventilator and pretty much you're over with. So the ash alone is a reason to leave and I see a lot of people not even wearing mask that's the least you should do and that's not enough. I guess it's just it is what it is I believe it's sad though. That's just my opinion.
