La Palma volcano: Lava "tsunami" gushes down hillside after overflowing main cone

- Опубликовано: 14 окт 2021
- Video posted from The Canary Islands Volcanology Institute shows what it described as a lava "tsunami” pouring down the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma, Spain after it overflowed from its main cone on Thursday.
Copernicus EMS said 6,800 people had been evacuated in total, with lava covering 674 hectares so far.
With no end in sight to the eruption, which is in its fourth week, authorities expected the lava flow to advance to the northwest, beyond the boundary of the evacuated area.

I read 'tsunami' and had a bit of a chuckle thinking that's a bit over the top but as I watched I heard myself say 'wow' 6 or 7 times out loud. That lava flow is 'over the top'.

The lava is flowing westwards, just in case anyone is curious. This camera angle is facing approximately NE. The action is north of the Cumbre Vieja National Park, and is about one-third the way up the island. Los Llanos (pronounced ya-nohs) is just a bit north of the east-west line of lava flow.

Thanks for the great view. Is that lava really running that fast??? Looks like a river. Does that mean the level of viscosity is lower? Or is there just so much more of it???
I'm not a geologist or volcano expert, but I suggest that the uppermost layer of magma must be cooler than what is below. So maybe that is why the initial lava flow was so slow but this lava is possibly hotter and more fluid. Just my own observation.
The viscosity depends on the amount of silica in the lava, which varies from region to region. I may have it backwards, but I believe the more silica, the thicker the lava.

There's a possibility that there could be a massive landslide that displaces upto 25 kilometres of land into the Atlantic ocean causing a mega tsunami. Western Europe, southern England and the Atlantic coast plus the Caribbean could be all casualties if this was to happen.

Work on your headlines please. River of lava would be more apt, tsunami shouldn't be used. Y'all use the word because it drags the attention of people hoping this volcano crates a landslide causing an actual tsunami. Please be more thoughtful.
The scientists called it a tsunami of lava too.
What are the odds of an actual tsunami happening?
I just saw that the lava was flowing at 250 meters per hour, that's relly fast, maybe that's why they called it a tsunami.
@@anon56725 very low.
@@scatteredseedsofhappiness3285 Yeah, I heard that later after this comment. However I believe my point still stands, it is not and has not been a "tsunami" in any sense of the word. To me it's like those headlines or sound byte of "It looks like a warzone, or a bomb went off". The hyperbole grabs attention, yet it can misinform or even detract from the facts at hand. That's my problem with it. Especially when this story only gained so much attention so quickly because of the scientific studies that have been done on La Palma that, in laymen's terms, say that a volcano could cause a landslide that causes a mega-tsunami.
Watching this on my laptop screen is impressive enough. I can't imagine seeing it in person. Wow....
Are these the right conditions to create lava tubes? It looks like it might be. I've hiked a couple of lava tubes and it's pretty interesting.
Remember; that's not water, that's ROCK. Take some rock in your back yard, then take a propane torch and heat up the rock until it turns red hot and melts; that's what lava is = molten rock.
Thanks for the info, Dr. Science. I'm sure most of us thought lava was the gooey topping from a pepperoni pizza.
Never tried that but I’m pretty sure you could not produce enough heat nor sustain such heat as to melt rock in your backyard in the open air.

This Canary Island on 🌋 La Palma, (I've been watching almost a month - it's been active for 30 days) is incredible (true sense of word.) The most RECENT eruption in 1971 was 1/3 the size in terms of lava produced. People who have criticized the population on the island for living next to an "active volcano " are nasty know-it-alls. It's predicted that at this point when more lava enters the ocean, with the collapse of the volcano (rock, lava, etc.) Rumors that it will create a MEGA Tsunami are not based on fact and it would only create waves near the Canary Islands Absolutely not the East Coast of the United States as crap social media has said.
But lava is now carrying 3 story buildings with it.

"Humans, do you think you rule the earth? Watch this."
The video incorrectly said the volcano was in its fourth week, but I believe it's been about two months.
I never seen lava move so quick.
The danger now: the eruption spreads and starts to weaken the higher peaks of the Cumbre Vieja volcanic cone. That increases the possibility of a major landslide, which at bare minimum will cause huge damage to the island.
Remember the commenters saying they KNOW it will only last a few days? I do.

@Ultramarine Ice Queen no, the strength to get through the ocean that could swallow the volcano whole. Would have to be greater then that of the ocean to get from all the way next to Africa to reach here would have to be like it, Krakatoa, Etna, Hellens, visuvious combine to create a wave big enough to wipe out east coast, or even reach it.
@@lupinswitch99 I think this is correct. It would maybe be some 3m-5m max. Some places like northeast of south amerika get more. And the Islands and African West(where nobody lives). It will not be "THE MEGA TZUNAMI" they Predicted with simulations.
