    I got a 14" bar and bigger chain for my MS180, sooo much better, and bolts straight on, no sprocket change. Ive done your suggested mods already, they make the saw much nicer to use. Mine runs very rich, so the spark arrestor will be the next thing to go. Great vid!

      Yea i did the same thing!!! and its a NEW SAW!!! I love that thing. NO it wont blast up a 22 oak its not meant for that... You dont take a tack hammer and drive in HUGE spikes right? NO. But for smaller work its inane. Limbs smaller trees its awesome. Thank you for posting this some other guy said DONT do that... Ive run my 180 Lots with the muffler opened up a little and the spark arrestor out and the big tooth conversion and its AWESOME...

    I am really considering buying this saw. I have a very old 020AV made is West Germany. Its a great old saw for around the house, but it does not have a chain break, and it worries me to use it in the event of a kickback. The add on's you did was some of the reasons I have been on the fence about this saw. I know it is a entry level saw, but for a home owner like myself that just uses is for yard maintenance, and cutting camp fire wood, i think its a great bargain.

    • @TheRustyGarageandHomestead
      @TheRustyGarageandHomestead  4 месяца назад

      Hi Andrew. For around the house and smaller job this saw is fantastic. I use the 170's a lot after i cut down a tree and use it to limb with. Its a lot lighter than my other saws and does a great job. Its probably lighter than your 026av

    l have already purchased 2 ms 180s for $299au with carry case and spare chain. Beware one struggling dealer refused to provide carry case as "his margins were to thin. Second and subsequent purchases made with a much better Stihl dealer. I have completed these upgrades for $22 au. l am planning to go to the 18inch bar (rare) on the second chainsaw.
    4 years later and l haven't worn out the first one yet after 8 new chains and one new bar. Brilliant machine has completed over 500 hours work. Not quiet the disposable cheap purchase l was expecting.

    The BEST 'modification' one can make to the MS-170 is to trash the .043 bar and chain that the saw comes with. Putting on a 14" bar, with an .050 groove and the compatible chain made a whole different saw out of it.
    For what the little saw is designed, and sold for, there is NO need for the other add-ons.

  • @oakiewoodsman
    @oakiewoodsman 11 месяцев назад +1

    I like the ms170. I think it is a good performing saw for the money and weight. They get a lot of criticism but I suspect it may very well be from the same people that don’t recognize the purpose and value in a battery powered tool as well. I find that many tools excel in one area but not another. Not every saw needs be 70cc or 90cc. 😂

    • @TheRustyGarageandHomestead

      Joe i totally agree. For years we used our MS310, 290, 041 and 08 for cutting and limbing. When we 1st got the MS170 I picked it up to see the weight difference i thought if this thing cuts decent this will help a ton for doing limb work. It works great for those smaller tasks. Currently i think those saws are $199 i believe ours was around $150 when we got it. For the money its a great value. Both of these upgrades i believe cost me around $25. I feel that for the upgrades it was money well spent. Thanks for the comment and stay warm

    I use a dry film lube on my saw bearings,goes on wet and dries it becomes a film, it is lube but wont attract dirt. Grease the base the of the air filter toi kewep micro dust from being sucked in. A 14 inch non safety bar and chain seems about perfect of these little saws. The metal dawg proctects the frint of the oil tank.

The steel ones will help this little saw out a ton. Ive really been looking forward to the side chain adjuster. I think for OEM parts it cost me right at $15 on amazon. Stick to genuine parts if you can.

I'm in a different situation since I already have a 170 i would buy a 170 just because if I needed to I could keep the same parts for those saws. Idk how much the parts are different for the 180's. I have honestly never ran a ms180 but I know alot of people like them. Alot of people like the 170's. To me this ms 170 has cut things I shouldn't have used it on. I'd consider the use of grease inadvisable in such a dirty application as a chain saw. It will tend to capture and retain all manner of grit and abrasives. And certainly there's enough oil flying around anyway, so that no additional lubrication is even needed.
    Maybe that's recommended by Stihl, but seems inadvisable to me.

    • @TheRustyGarageandHomestead
      @TheRustyGarageandHomestead  8 месяцев назад

      Hi Lynnlard. I believe you are correct it is not the best. Its a good idea to clean & inspect it regularly. It does need some lubrication on it however. That brg will get very dry and spinning at 14k RPM's I've seen the ends of the crank wear down from a dry Brg.
      I did not have any in this video but the use of a dry graphite lubricant is what I would normally like to run.

    I have a MS180 and i did the SIMPLE Big tooth conversion by changing out the bar and chain to the Next size up without WITHOUT any modifications. This give you a MUCH better cutting saw. And the chain is MUCH more beefy and to me Easier to sharpen. The saw REALLY comes to life and cuts well AFTER this modification. STIHL OE parts even say it FITS so before you say it NOT intended to use that size you are WRONG. On the package for the BAR and Chain it CLEARLY says Fits MS180. Why would Stihl put that it fits on the package if you cant use it. The Pico chain shit is garbage... And it belongs there.

      @@TheRustyGarageandHomestead here is the Part number for the BAR. On the bar it clearly says ms170 ms180. This bar is for an .050ga just search this part number and you will know what chain you need. You will NOT need to replace your sprocket.

      @@TheRustyGarageandHomestead Our Local Stihl dealer will sell MS180s With this bar and chain on the saw already. You can also take the part number directly to your Stihl dealer to see if they have the Bar and chain In stock. I would bet they do. IF the guy says something dumb like it wont cut well or its NOT designed to use that.. On the package it says fits 170 180 and 10 OTHER saws. He might reply well because you can dont mean you should... HAVE common sense its not a 70cc saw. I have used mine plenty of times at this point and it preforms awesome. I also opened up my exhaust with a screw flat screwdriver a touch just bend them open more and remove the spark arrestor that gets clogged up. Keep her sharp and you are in for a NEW saw. The saw handles it Awesome. You dont need a 251. My ms180 is a awesome little saw.

    For the cost of your "upgrades" you should've just bought an MS180 or MS210. You'd have been much further ahead for the same cost, and NO bother.

      @notmyname3883 you could. If you already own the 170 then this is cheap upgrades and it's not really a bother. Very simple to do these upgrades.

      This guy owed me $100 bucks so he gave me this chainsaw instead. I appreciate these upgrades because in the end the chainsaw really didn't cost me anything. I actually wasn't expecting to get paid back haha.
