Awesome job man. You inspired me to go do this ride today. It’s relentless but a great challenge. I have the Wahoo Kickr and added the Climb grade simulator recently. Not really worth the money but the change in geometry is at least a good distraction and reminds you when the gradient is changing.
My goodness!!!! Bravo. This is without a doubt my new favorite cycling channel. Congrats on 100 subs. Mark my words. It’ll be 1k by end of the month. The fact that you set a goal an hit it is inspiring. ✊🏾✊🏾 As for setup it really depends on your budget. A decent used road bike and used Wahoo Kickr would be my recommendation. MOST IMPORTANT: Riding with a front suspension fork is eating up watts and efficiency. A lot… In all actuality, you completed that climb in about 87min.
Solid effort mate. As a heavier rider myself who's done a few Alpine climbs irl, Alpe Du Zwift is a wall. Maybe a goal-time effort up Ven-Top? (A longer climb with even more elevation)
Very nice job pacing your self, your graph looks like a its done in ERG mode, and thats the most efficent way to climp the alp, steady power. And a sprint finish after 90 minutes of climbing.. You are a beast :D
Well done mate. I missed out on climbing the Alpe in my target of 1hr by 32secs one week, was gutted!! But did it again the next week and got under my target time, you've just got to be super consistent on your watt numbers all the way up. I did a negative split, half just under what I needed and then half just over. In terms of kit. I started with a wheel on trainer which was okay, but then upgraded to a direct drive (wheel off) trainer - Wahoo Kickr. It's so so much better. Way better feel and way quieter than wheel on. I also splashed out a bit and got the Kickr over the Kickr Core as you don't have to do a spin down as it auto-calibrates as you ride which is a really nice feature. I would also reccomend getting a 2nd hand road bike for your trainer as you asked (but not over an upgraded trainer first). It will put you in a better position for racing especially. Enjoy your Zwift journey, it's addictive! Been going 1 year now and still enjoying it.
Seeing you trying to get the finish and the seconds ticking away brought back some pretty intense memories of my first sub 1h ADZ, finished 59min58s and had to lay down for 5 mins. Would have been totally devasted missing it by such a small margin. A+ for effort. Keep at it and your next one will be a lot easier. If that can motivate you to keep those cranks turning, I started cycling 2y ago at 100kg, was a 2w/kg, now riding at 3.4w/kg at 81kg (44y old). Invest in a good smart trainer it's well worth it i think. Tacx Neo2T is awesome.
Good effort mate. It has been proven that high cadence low gearing 90-105 RPM is the way to go when climbing. In terms of trainer would recommend Tacx Neo 2/2T.
Nice video and I love the fight and determination at the end. That said, on next go, don't make such a drastic shift in gearing when you want to push harder. Maybe move one or two gears but keep your rpm right in that same 80 - 90 range. You'll end up getting to the same higher wattage but it will feel far less like you are trying to push a mountain up the mountain. I honestly think you would've comfortably made it up under 90 minutes if you were less aggressive on the gear change in the final stretch. As to trainers, it comes down to budget really. I just started doing Zwift in December and went with the Stages SB20 - it's very nice and super quiet which would solve your neighbor problem but as a full integrated smart bike, its not light on the pocket book. If you're just looking for a quieter / better trainer, something like the Wahoo Kickr would be a solid get.
It’s nice to see a cycling RUclipsr who isn’t built like a pro racer. I’m slightly heavier than you and have just started riding on Zwift. I’ve not done Alpe de Zwift but I have actually ridden up the real life Alpe d’Huez in 1 hr 45m. I’m using a Wahoo Kickr and my Specialized Allez Elite road bike, but I’ve also used my Triban 9 speed road bike on the Kickr, just have to swap the cassette over.
Great Effort! Trainer: Wahoo Kickr Core and as for the bike: that kind of depends what riding you like to do when you are not riding indoors. A gravel bike might give your the most flexibility, but of course that depends on what kind of riding you like. Canyon Grizl, Van Rysel RCX or something similar comes to mind. Generally your can pick up solid bikes in 1k-2k budget region with Shimano 105 or equivalent groupsets.
I got the Wahoo Kickr bike on Dec 14th, I'm totally new to cycling and didn't have a bike to start with, so it seemed like a good fit for me. So far I love it, close to 30 hours on it. I've done the Alp 3 times so far, I just barely got a sub 90 min the last time, you put in a great effort man, you'll crush it next time.
Well done mate, zwift is a different beast for beginners like myself, been cycling 22 months now, progress is steady but it's the best thing I ever did.
I’m also 100kg, can put some decent power out but have been putting off ADZ and sticking to flatter routes. I’ve just bought a smart trainer so think it’s time to work my way up there! Nicely done mate!
Great job! Instead of focusing on the 4 seconds you missed think about the huge improvement you had compared to your previous time! You rock!! Ps I have a giant tcr and kickr. Not cheap but the kickr is an absolutely amazing indoor trainer. The giant tcr is a great all around road bike as well if you want to get into some serious outdoor riding. All the best from 🇨🇦!! Eric
Nice! I am also heavy, I’ve gained a lot of weight since I quit outside riding. Now I just started Zwift and I’ve been eyeballing the alp! I’ve done similar rides in the past, but that was more than 3 years ago and 40 pounds less weight!
Well done! I use a wahoo kickr core. It's really really quiet. So try and get a turbo trainer that you take your rear wheel off, so it mounts directly to the turbo as that will reduce the noise / vibrations. It also came with alot of adapters so most bikes will fit on there. On mine is a very old 9 speed mountain bike and it works fine.
I would sugest that but I don't think his bike is compatibale with the kickr core. He should then also buy a racing bike witch would all together cost around 1.500 euro's at least (kickr + bike). So to give a real solid advice whe sould now the budget.
@@frankkriellaars Why would it not be compatible? Is it his gearing, or are the forks not compatible? The core doesn't come with a rear cassette, so he can buy whatever one his bike uses (and maybe have to shim). Or get a better bike, truthfully he'll be much happier doing that if he can afford it. Besides some firmware glitches, core has been fantastic for me here, and super quiet compared to my wheel on.
@@collider4378 i don't now what cassette he runs on this bike. I think the core is compatibel with standard 9 or 10 speed casettes. Might need to use spacers and stuff like that to make something else fit and it still works sub optimal.
Awesome mate! I bought an elite suito a couple of months ago and It has been flawless. Tacx flux s is pretty good too. Also getting a road bike would put you in a much better position. Keep up the great work!
Well done! I have a cheapo TACX Blue Motion trainer that i use with my older road bike. I use the blue trainer specific tyre, there is very little noise. I have a spare real wheel which has the trainer tyre on it all the time. If I want to use the bike outside i swap the wheel. I have had it for about 4 years, its well used and still quiet
Nice work there mate, impressive determination. Can't remember the last time I did the AdZ, but as a 100kg guy, like you it kicks my arse! Look forwards to seeing you smash it soon. Almost tempted to jump on and see what I can do now lol. As for trainers, I have gone from a Tacx Flux, to a Neo, to a NeoBike, and would recommend any of them. The Flux and Neo are both wheel off, and pretty damn quiet.
Nice effort! Alpe du zwift is such a climb! The first time I did it I finished in 63 mins and was stoked to get so close to sub 60. (I’m a 17y/o, about 62kg) Two months later I went for it again and crushed my previous time finishing in 57:35. It’s funny because I’m very inexperienced to riding, the second time was practically balls out, but I credit my cardio from running as a high school runner for the success. I generally run 30-40mi week and use biking as cross training. But vice versa can be done too!
Great job! Congratulations! I haven't done that climb yet ... But over 30 years of cycling experience (including racing), and since november on zwift, too, I think I can see how efforts of other fellow cyclists are. You definitely need a different set-up. I'm using elite's direto xr combined with my vintage cannondale caad4 (about 1998) road bike (updated it with some tiagra 10 gears last year). The direto is not the most expensive, here in Switzerland about GBP 730 - it's a medium priced direct trainer. However, very accurate and well built (Italy!). If you only want to use a bike on the direto, try to get an "older" road bike and perhaps refurbish it (like I did), then you have actually a state of the art set-up at a reasonable price (and you of course could still ride it outdoors). Have fun and ride on! Oh, almost forgot: having a road bike, you of course can switch cassettes to your liking (i.e. I just swapped my 11-28 out , for a 11-34 because I'm going to be taking on those Pretzels on watopia which in the end include all major climbs ... just as in reality.)
I use an Elite XR-t since paid (850€ but have seen also in sales for 500;)) 1 month im very happy ;) , tremendous effort looking forward to race together on zwift as an heavy cyclist (93kg) youre effort was amazing .
Great progress - keep it up 👍🏿 I hope you base your training on a polarized model to ensure you’re not burning out. Switching to a road bike will increase your watts drastically because of the different energy transfer in a more forward-leaning position.
Great job. You'll get it next time! I'm going to attempt my 1st ascent sometime next week. I'm waiting on delivery of my Elite Suito as an upgrade from the Kurt Kinetic Road Machine I purchased in 2003. Everything I've read about the Suito indicates that it's a good smart trainer for the money so I'm looking forward to getting it hooked up.
Couple of tips: 1) The massive sprint you did at the end means you had somkething left in the tank after the last hairpin. Try to spread this "left over" more evenly through the climb, i.e. so much that you can't sprint at the end but are just busy with maintaining your power. 2) Can you lock your suspension fork? You are loosing a lot of power into suspension when going out of the saddle, power that is not transmitted to the crank. 3) When being out of the saddle, try to pull the hand towards you, which is on the same side as the foot that is currently pushing downwards. This way, your arm supports your leg to exert more power on the pedal.
Thanks for the advice! Next time I'll try to go out a bit harder, it was the first time doing it, so I wasn't really sure how hard I could push myself. The suspension can't be locked out unfortunately, so I'll just have to deal with that until I get a new bike.
This was surprisingly fun to watch(I don't really watch Swift videos usually). I am not sure what sort of course are available on Zwift, but maybe do something with a lot of short punchy climbs? Might be fun to see going all out then trying to recover before the next wall hits.
great job! Especially that sprint at the end. Don't know if I would ever have the power of doing that after cycling up the climb. Am a 108kg rider, my only ascent up the Alp de Zwift is just over 87 minutes. Never dipped below 195 watts, was riding the majority of it at just around 235 to 255 watts and sometimes standing and putting out 350-380 for shorter segments to vary it up a bit. A sufferfest I am not too keen on repeating. That being said I am planning on the Ven-Top...but not at any serious pace, just utilizing all my gears and pacing it up the climb. My setup is a Trek Domane SL5 2020 model on a direct drive trainer, Tacxs Neo S.
Top effort mate! If you can afford it then a direct drive trainer will always beat a wheel on trainer, maybe have a look at getting some clip less pedals and shoes which would be a cheaper upgrade to start with, but well done on the effort and keep going!
Nice one! I havent braved the Alpe Du Zwift yet - challenge accepted! I have the Wahoo Kickr Snap 2 - it does the job pefectly well for a beginner like me :) enjoy the journey!
I would recommend the wahoo kickr core as the mid-range direct-drive trainer. If that's too expensive, then the best wheel-on trainer you can get would be the wahoo kickr snap. With your road bike, I would recommend something that's under 8 kilos, (7 if possible) with a good quality saddle. You can always buy a new saddle too. This will help with longer rides on the trainer. Also invest in some clipless (not actually clip-less but that's what they're called) pedals and shoes, because it makes you feel more connected to the bike, recruits more muscles and makes it easier to replicate foot position. Buying a new road bike will help save some watts due to there being no suspension, so that standing up you could probably get an extra 50 watts. Good video! Totally underrated content.
I've got some clipless pedals on the way! Should arrive in time for the next video. Would getting a lighter bike really make that much difference? My thinking is that I already weigh 100kg, so better to just lose the weight off myself and just spend more on the trainer?
@@JMower Nah, you don't need a super light bike at that weight. One benefit that lighter bike would give you even as a heavier rider is a "snappier" feel, but imo it isn't worth the massive additional cost given there will only be an extremely minimal difference in speed - the difference of a 9kg vs 7kg bike is less than 2% of total weight if you're 100kg.
good effort pal, a bit of rest and some good fuel will see you knock those 4seconds off easily but in terms of set up what would certainly help is a bike without suspension and some clipless pedals, also spend your drops wisely on a lightweight bike and wheels if you can. Finally a good playlist can make a huge difference.
I'm just starting the 12 week build training program in hopes to complete this climb without killing myself. I bought the Kickr trainer with the direct connect adapter so I don't have any Wifi dropout. I'm currently about 77kg trying to get down to 68 kg to maximize my watts/kg. My cycling technique basically sucks at this point and I just need to get use to suffering again. Thank you for sharing, It looks like this climb is a massive physical/mental test.
I am a 100kg (+) man and I live in a flat part of the US. I want to climb the road to the Sun at Glacier National Park at some point. It's about 1000m (3300') in 17.6km (11mi) Of course, besides rides such as this one, part of the plan is to get to closer to 90kg. I'm not going to be much smaller as I'm built like a US football linebacker. That was true in my 20s and still true 30+ years later. So I'm attempting this in my mid to late 50s. Your improvement over the previous best was massive and no shame in your result. Well done!
I'm actually so gutted I had to laugh! 4 seconds bro!! I mean this video was a long time ago, haven't seen your other stuff (yet) so I'm looking forward to see any improvements🤘🏽
Gave it a like after the comment: "legs are starting to burn, well not much I can do about that. Dig deep!". Then subscribed after the effort put in at the end to push for sub 90. I got the Kickr just before Christmas that I use with my 105 groupset Cannondale. Yet to do the Alpe. Been building up to it and need to find enough time. Watched a few of your recent videos, Liking the content. 👍
Well made and entertaining. Keep it up, mate. I use the Elite Suito. Teething problems are now gone with this direct drive trainer. Noise levels from the trainer are impressivly low. You will find it good value for money IMHO.
Great work. You'll crack that 90 min easy next time. I have a wahoo kickr core and love it. The direct drive (no bike wheel) is very quiet and because its smart it'll sort the resistance for me instead of me changing gears and increasing the resistance switch on my last 'wheel-on' dumb trainer (manual, no electrics). A smart trainer makes workouts a lot easier too. numbers instead
Great effort. Two tips: go high cadence (if you do not train cadence that is likely above 80 rpm) or at least not below 60 rpm. You totally trash your legs. Low RPM means more torque means more fast twitch (glycolytic) fiber involvement means more anaerobic glycolysis means more lactacte means more burning. Try to stay in the saddle. In a situation where you do not have to sprint, the metabolic cost of getting out of the saddle outweighs the advantages (the advantage being that out of the saddle you likely reach your peak power). I think you have a good basis to become a good cyclist, for an untrained person, you have a good leg physique and that tummy melts in no time if you discover sufficient joy in cycling.
Subbed after that last effort to push for the 90 min! Good going. I got The Tacx Flux S, I can also recommend the Elite Suito. Both are direct drive turbos and way quieter than the wheel on type.
Big respect for this effort on a bike like this! cranking out big watts into the suspension lol. looking forward seeing you becoming a cyclist, maybe you can get your hands on a used roadbike from ebay

It has been proven that high cadence low gearing 90-105 RPM is the way to go when climbing.

I’m a 100kg guy and made it up the climb in about 104 min. It was the hardest climb I’ve ever done, I look forward to doing it many more times.
Try it in real life, that's definitely the hardest climb I've ever done. It was never 40 degrees Celsius when I did it on Zwift!!!
I'm 110KG and am inspired to give it a go now! Great job man
Popped into my feed today, subscribed straight away, finally someone I can relate to as I'm around 110kg. Fantastic content !!!
Awesome Effort! Gained a sub. As a big rider myself, Ive only tried it once about a month ago and got to turn 10. 105kg though :(
Give it a few months and I'm sure you'll make it!
Joseph have you tried it again?
@@militarygradegear4004 No :( Lost abit of motivation as everyone I rode with outside could just pull away. Need to get back on it.
Massive effort man! Much respect 💪
That cycling bag in the frame between legs is a No-No.
Put it on the handlebar, out of the way.
Good job on the Alpe, keep going!
Solid effort bloke!! Loved it. Might have to target this myself being a big bloke. Just buy the wheel off wahoo trainer that you can afford.
Like your videos!! keep up the great work!
Mate, you nailed it! My kudos to you!
I have it for about 4 months now. Been on around 60 sessions now. No issues whatsoever. Great buy.
Good luck! Let's hope the Elite Suito lasts as long as your previous one!
Well done. Wahoo Kickr for me have had it for about 6 weeks
Well done mate, you are inspiring me to give it another go, bailed at 7 so will try again…
My setup is a Trek Domane SL5 2020 model on a direct drive trainer, Tacxs Neo S.
you got my like as soon as i saw your riding outfit mate, top effort
Love the bike! Great effort!
Great Effort! Fantastic Video. Massive respect
Great work, I remember it snowing when I went up there
Great to revisit a video done to celebrate 100 subs!
Cheers! I can't watch my old videos, makes me cringe too much 😂😂
Great work. I’m in the same boat…. I bought a wahoo kickr core and although I thought it was expensive I am so pleased with it.
Keep it up buddy 👍🏽
Great effort, buddy!
Cool vid, you will crack 90 Next time 👍👍
Great effort! I just purchased a Wahoo Kickr Core. I highly recommend one.
Great video. Love the final effort. We’ve all been there on Zwift!!!
Nice work J Mower.
Congrats mate, next time you beat that 90min mark!
Top effort mate! If you can afford it then a direct drive trainer will always beat a wheel on trainer, maybe have a look at getting some clip less pedals and shoes which would be a cheaper upgrade to start with, but well done on the effort and keep going!
Fantastic effort I'm 125kg and haven't attempted that climb yet But it's there wiring for me
Solid ride, well done! I use the Wahoo Kickr. Solid, accurate and quiet. A little pricey though Ride on!
Amazing effort lad
Nice video dude!
Well done!
@@JMower Agree!
@@JMower True. I think you should at least get a nice road bike though.
I have a wahoo core and it’s very quiet and was recommended by my local bike shop. Nice video and good effort!
good effort pal, a bit of rest and some good fuel will see you knock those 4seconds off easily but in terms of set up what would certainly help is a bike without suspension and some clipless pedals, also spend your drops wisely on a lightweight bike and wheels if you can.
Awesome work mate :) keep that fitness up 💪🏼
Well done lad
I am a 100kg (+) man and I live in a flat part of the US. I want to climb the road to the Sun at Glacier National Park at some point. It's about 1000m (3300') in 17.6km (11mi)
Of course, besides rides such as this one, part of the plan is to get to closer to 90kg. I'm not going to be much smaller as I'm built like a US football linebacker. That was true in my 20s and still true 30+ years later.
So I'm attempting this in my mid to late 50s.
Your improvement over the previous best was massive and no shame in your result. Well done!
Great effort!! The elite suito T is a very good trainer for the money, as for a bike I would go for a normal racebike or gravel bike.
Impressive effort especially at the end.
Good job, dude! \m/
I'm actually so gutted I had to laugh! 4 seconds bro!!
I mean this video was a long time ago, haven't seen your other stuff (yet) so I'm looking forward to see any improvements🤘🏽
Tell me about it!! This was actually over a year ago now, I was planning try again pretty soon! Hoping to get under 70/65 mins
Great job!
Keep it up brother!!!!! 💪🏽
Dang, I was mad because I'm 193lbs and you are 220lbs. Way to go, I gotta get my leg strength back, I have the endurance.
It's fun to watch others suffer. Nice one!
Subbed after that last effort to push for the 90 min! Good going. I got The Tacx Flux S, I can also recommend the Elite Suito. Both are direct drive turbos and way quieter than the wheel on type.
Had to turn my volume down incase my wife was wondering why I was watching 😂
@@LTFC77 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Big respect for this effort on a bike like this! cranking out big watts into the suspension lol. looking forward seeing you becoming a cyclist, maybe you can get your hands on a used roadbike from ebay
Great video ,just bought my kickr.I’m heavier than you but it looks great fun.
