Also shows how Alex checked his ego at the door. It's his band after all and he let both of them do what they do, smartly I might add. He didn't love the 80s keyboard transition and him and Geddy had thier differences about it but Alex grew as a guitar player because of it IMO.

You say Alex is just playing chords. But what chords is he playing? At this time was using inversions and shapes and extensions that NOBODY else was using in Rock. Also as Geddy put it. “Nobody can arpeggiate like Alex”

As a guitarist since the 80's yes I love what Alex and Geddy does, but the drums is what's usually grabbing my attention in Rush's music, Neil plays them like a lead instrument and not just another backbeat rhythm section drummer, which REALLY makes Rush stand out to me over the years.

I think what makes Alex a genius is that he is not only “playing chords” but outrageously intricate arpeggios that paint the tone of the song.

I listened to Hemispheres a lot in HS.
Jan 82 I was in Sub School in New London Connecticut.
I was very home sick, looking out over the roof tops on the base from the 2nd floor of the Barracks on a cloudy, rainy New England Sunday afternoon .
Being very home sick, “a boy alone so far from home, endless rooftops from my windows,
I felt the gloom of empty rooms, on rainy afternoons”
    played through my soul.
That connected me to Rush for the rest of my life in a very unique way.

Ok about Alex genius. Notice how many different affect he uses in each song. Notice how much space he fills with the chords he uses.
He plays a dissonant almost abstract in and out of the scale solos No 2 solos sound the same.
His guitar playing evolves just like the rest of the band. When he play's fast it is melodic and a texture he does not over play .
The pick scratch and the pick harmonics are piercing his use of the whammy bar . The guitar parts are integral to the song .The use of the volume pedal by him
was ground breaking. He is amazing.

This song is basically about Neil and his time in London. He moved to London to try and make it in the music business as a drummer prior to joining Rush. He did not have much luck but this song's lyrics partially reflect that time in his life "A boy alone so far from home". But then later (second verse), he does achieve the dream (with Rush) and reflects on how he's still the same guy, but the people around him have changed.
With regard to Geddy... not only is he killing it on the bass, he's doing that while singing. Just amazing.

The hallmark of Rush songs, the song itself just works. Which is always the goal. No ego gets priority. Service to the material.
The guitar groove is raw and gritty and drives the song's energy. The bass and drums are just nuts and do add the flavor. 54 flavors worth.
All with introspective lyrics that touch every young dreamer wishing for tomorrow holding on to yesterday. It's a mini classic.

Because the guitar is "USUALLY" the "star" of the show, your take on Rush being a rhythmic band is something most of us already knew, this was the main reason acceptance was difficult and deciding where they belonged in the larger scheme of music genres, are they prog rock, prog metal ect......
Has Alex been underappreciated? To some the answer is no! To others, its difficult to have the guitar play second fiddle to drums or the bass, but Alex was musically gifted enough to instantly realize that when Neil came aboard, the sky was the limits, and we are the benefactors of their vision musically.
Alex put his ego aside, for this alone, he DEFINITELY deserves more credit than he's ever received!

Who the f**k does that? RUSH DOES!! And talk about the guitarist Alex, he’s basically the creator of the band, and has the least amount of ego to allow the other two Carte Blanche. The great thing about Rush is that all three of them are incredibly versatile and accomplished and talented musicians, and they mix it up. Each one slips into different roles at different times. Geddy is taking more of a prominent role in this song, but in many other songs, both Geddy and Alex step back and the focus is on Neil (Tom Sawyer is a good example, it's fully carried by the drumming). Sometimes Geddy has the focus, and sometimes it's Alex that makes the song (like Red Sector A). As an example on this album, Alex jumps to the front in The Trees, and has an amazing lead in La Villa Strangiato. There's plenty of songs where Alex is just amazing in how his guitar is all over the place (Force Ten, We Hold On). On any album, you'll hear them all taking turns paying various roles.

  • @l.thomas4268
    @l.thomas4268 Год назад +2

I've heard you mention in the last couple of videos about how that Alex is just holding down chords. And that is what he became known for through the '80s was more of what was called a soundscape. His playing is very thoughtful. You probably know this more than I do but there's a lot of jazz influence in the way he's approaching his notes and then his arpeggios which keep the feel of the song moving in a certain way. Many people might consider some of Stan getz saxophone playing simple and boring but it wasn't just a solos that made his playing legendary. There's the dissonance and the pulling along of our Western ears into places that they're not used to be in.

As someone mentioned in an earlier video from this album or Farewell to Kings, the dynamic in Rush is not too different from The Who, where Entwhistle and Moon play the lead and Townsend is mostly playing rhythm on the guitar, with occasional solos if the other two will let him in (which is a very odd dynamic given Pete wrote most of their music). It's not a knock on Alex or Pete, it's just the dynamic of the band and it works.
Genesis is another band (when they had a guitar player) where Steve Hackett added atmospherics and rhythm and rarely soloed - in this case deferring to Tony Banks' keyboards and Phil's drums (and occasionally Mike Rutherford's bass). Not every band can be Yes, where the four musicians playing instruments effectively share the lead role. None of this detracts from how well Alex or Pete, or Steve Hackett performed, or how important their role is to the overall sound of the band.

  • @aj_macready

Just saying, the reason people get frustrated and have for over 40 yrs is that the general consensus quickly became that Neil and Geddy were among the best, if not THE best, at their particular instrument. It happened almost immediately with them, whereas Alex does not get that same recognition. Understanding that what you have found interesting about the band's music so far has been the rhythm section, bass and drums, totally valid -- but lots of us feel that he's integral to the sound. Without his guitar this just isn't the same thing. And that's speaking beyond just the chemistry, which is crucial too, but his SKILL at the guitar and how that affects his contributions. All three are in the conversation for masters of their instrument, I feel. Maybe you'll get there too, who knows? If not, these videos still rule. Glad and thankful for them.

  • @HansMcGruber

Alex writes very cool riffs and interesting chord structures, and Geddy is playing very busy lines underneath those chords (while singing amazingly) And Neil fits up that crazy bass playing with his own busyness on the drums. This song has no guitar solo, Rush did that occasionally, but there are others where Alex shreds a solo like La Villa, Freewill, and Cut to the Chase to name a few. One song Alex is the star, the next Neil or Geddy, or sometimes all three at once.

Let's put it this way, this band would have not gone far if Eddie Van Halen was the guitar player. No room for him. That's what made Alex so great. Many virtuoso guitar players are judged by their flair and volume of notes. Alex brough a whole different level. He was basically a blues rock player but he opened up that band with his adventurous chording and modes and found his place in the mix with a VERY busy rhythm section. And don't fool yourself. The greatness of Geddy and Neil shines in the mix with Alex's big chords, modes and pioneering arpeggio work. Ultimately that's what made Rush so great. The band WAS the 3 of them and could not exist in any modified lineup. I never saw it as an internal competition....

I'm feeling what you are saying about rush musically concerning Alex. Thats what I always loved about rush and could only put my finger on it recently what is unique. It's Geddy is a lead upfront role, that he's mentioned before about himself as being an aggressive base player. Rush flipped the roles but it's how it should be, from my perspective, especially being a 3piece band. Its the basic fundamentals most don't get is the foundation(base and drums) is most important in any structure. Thats probably why they wouldn't appeal to some people because its less house show(guitars) and more foundation. But then again like you said, Alex is playing next to 2 other power houses vs if Alex was with 2 lesser talents he'd have to stand out more to fill in gaps. I experienced this as a drummer playing with just a singer and keyboard. I played out more but when other instruments came in I played more pocket and less showy fills to fill in gaps.

I love what Alex brings to Rush through his guitar. But...but...but...there is a reason that 90% of Rush reaction videos focus on Neil and Geddy. The idea you present that Rush is largely a 'rhythmic' band is something I never really considered but has a lot of merit and your reasoning is compelling. Anyway, I'm enjoying your take on their music.

Enjoying the Rush reactions. I used to think the same way about Alex. I think the trouble is his genius is subtle and not as obvious as Geddy and Neils heroics. It takes a few listens to fully get Alex's contribution.

Love this song. Would be my favorite on this album if it weren’t for La Villa. I like that while they do long songs, they are not afraid to keep a song short if they have said all they have to say and don’t add a bunch of extra stuff. I am a percussionist (not very good mind you) and I think you hit exactly one of the big reasons I really got into their music. The rhythmic nature of a lot of their songs hits just right for me. I don’t feel like you are knocking Alex you are describing how he fits in the band. Funny thing is you are seeing this now and we haven’t even got to the eighties music when I think it’s more obvious what are the driving forces of the music.

One of my faves (I have a lot of those). I’m working on a cover of this song. The bass part is very hard! Alex’s part especially in the bridge/interlude area is actually pretty complicated, as he is doing a nice arpeggio and skipping strings. There are some songs starting in the 80’s where Alex’s guitar solos are a big part of what makes the song. He does a similar thing to this song in the trees as well, and he shines a bit more on la villa strangiato.

We're entering the phase where Rush bass parts are a complete performance unto themselves (something Geddy learned from Chris Squire.) And the thing we talked about on "Hemispheres" where Alex is becoming the harmonic colorist -- tons of that here. I remember when I first heard this song and it really puzzled me. In some ways I felt like "Circumstances" is a throwback to earlier, simpler songs. But the chord choices, the interlocking unison bits, that atmospheric interlude... all new. Very cool song.

I felt the way you felt about Alex. I've been listening to them since 2112 came out. I felt Alex was kinda second string relative to Neil, and Geddy. It was after I heard Victor (Alex's solo album,) and in particular the contrast between that and My Favorite Headache (Geddy's solo album.) Victor is written for a seasoned listener. That is when I "got" Alex, and said, holy cow, I see what he is doing. This overcame a decades long bias in me about Alex.

I do appreciate your honesty in your reactions, and I get what you mean when you say the rhythm section is where the interesting stuff is going on in Rush, and the bass and drums are much more forward in the band. BUT...I think you're really selling Alex short, and I think it may be because you don't play guitar. I've seen a number of guitar players react to Rush and spend tons of time gawking at what Alex is doing. A good example is the guy at the Out Loud Reactions RUclips channel who started a similar project of listening to every Rush song in order but so far has only made it to Permanent Waves. He plays guitar and goes on and on about all the crazy stuff Alex does in the songs and pretty much thinks he's a guitar god. I think part of it is what Alex does SOUNDS simple and easy, but based on what guitar players say (I don't play guitar) it's actually very complex and challenging. So he's not just "playing chords", his guitar is a critical piece of the rhythm you're so impressed by. He also has some magnificent solos, for example in La Villa Strangiato. So, I'm not hating on you, keep up the great reactions I really like them, just a little difference of opinion! Have a great day!

My least favorite on this album (with only 4 songs and all excellent one has to take last place) but I’ve always enjoyed this song. For a short song it has lots of time changes. Circumstances was never a concert staple. It was played on the Hemispheres tour and brought back on the Snakes & Arrows tour in 2007-2008. I’m glad I got to see then play it live at least once in 2007. The French in the song is “More things change the more they stay the same.” And as I commented yesterday, I agree with your assessment of Alex’s role in the band. There’s no negative criticism there. H’s a gifted and unique musician and does what he does best and Rush would not be Rush without him. There are few if any guitar players like him.

In defense of Alex. Imagine being a guitar player in a three piece power trio with Ged and Neil? What guitar player is going to outshine those two without turning the guitar section into a blizzard of notes? If you had a guitar player like a Steve Vai paired with Ged and Neil would the music still appeal to the masses or be mostly admired by other musicians? I think that is really Al's strength that he was able to make RUSH appeal to the masses with his style and creativity instead of being technical wizard like a Steve Vai.

The Alex bashing continues I see. Do you realize that Alex was probably the genesis of old all these Rush masterpieces when they were in the songwriting phase? Being a great musician is far more than all out chops. Even Neil matured and learned this fact as Rush got farther into their careers. Songwriting and melody about to take a giant leap forward in short order from this record forward with very little sacrifice in their musical prowess at all. They find the perfect balance and that is when Rush REALLY hits their stride.

I really don't agree with your thinking. Not even. You play bass guitar and therefore pay more attention to playing this instrument. But Alex Lifeson beautifully stitches the songs together with guitar solos and basic accompaniments. I can't imagine Rush's complicated songs without Alex's guitar sounds. It is he who gives meaning and power to all of them. Geddy and Neil perform the rhythmic accompaniments.

I don't think anybody disputes that life's and takes the support role in this band, due to the inverse nature of their particular chemistry. As you said traditionally base is a support instrument to guitar.. but if we were to go down the rabbit hole on what you say is actually interesting about this band, namely bass guitar taking the lead and the drums.. then does that mean that all the bassists out there which traditionally support guitarists are equally uninteresting and as pedestrian as you seem to think Lifeson is?

I'm not saying any of what you're saying in that last sentence. not saying it's uninteresting or pedestrian. Saying he's playing a different role than most guitar players in most bands. Perhaps cause they aren't just a rock band but prog. I'm just making an observation thats all. I'm not saying Alex sucks or anything like that. I'm bringing it up because people often say he's so underrated.

    • @MARSHOMEWORLD
      @MARSHOMEWORLD Год назад +1

@@JustinPanariello I've often suspected he is considered "underrated" by people who are not musicians themselves. Or other players who just never got over being impressed by flashy stuff. In all the circles of musicians I've ever traveled in he's regarded quite respectfully. I Can Only Imagine the heaps of misinterpreted Shenanigans you've had heaped on You by people who instantly default to thinking you feel he sucks, I never got that impression. But yeah you have dogged him out quite a bit and sort of made him your Whipping Boy in your synopsis of what it is you feel makes Rush great. I would put forth that while you clearly understand his value as a player, it seems that the rare (among guitarists) ego-less support system he has developed in his playing which allows the other musicians to shine seems kind of lost on you. Which as I said in a previous comment; is kind of strange considering the musical pedigree you have. But each to their own.

I don't hear any criticism of Alex at all. I hear a bassist saying that the draw for him when it comes to Rush is the interplay between bass and drums.
As I said in the previous video, Alex IS an amazing guitarist and his strength in the band is in the harmonic content and color he provides to the songs (though Circumstances is not the best example of that). For those of us who are guitarists or for fans who are guitar-oriented, picking up on all great things going on in Alex's parts is perhaps a bit easier. You have to listen for it of course, and that can be a challenge in Rush because Geddy and Neil are such amazing virtuosos.
