I've never owned an Explorer but I've tried them a couple of times. The first thing you notice about the Explorer when you first have it in your lap is the balance. It just sits really well and it's surprisingly comfortable to play, even though it looks outrageous, haha.
Being a lefty myself, these are such a hard guitar to get your hands on here in Ireland. I’ve wanted one for years and couldn’t believe when this model come out, I jumped on it and absolutely love mine
Albert King played one upside down, before he could buy a lefty model, it worked for him! But that wasn't an Explorer, which backwards would be would be a very cool "reverse" model, at least it looks like it would be...?
I'm 32, and have been wanting one of these since I was 16. I just purchased one that's supposed to be delivered today. My literal dream guitar. I'm really excited.
Bar none, the Gibson Explorer remains my all time favorite guitar. I owned one for a couple of years and sold it. That guitar remains my "one that got away" guitar. Still miss it after 3 decades. Great video.
Damn Shane! That demo in the beginning totally ripped! You did a really great job of adapting your blues style to hard rock. Proves you don't need crazy fast sweep picking to get cookin'.
Got one of these earlier this year. Changed the knobs to top hats, switched to a black pickguard, and got all gold hardware plus locking tuners. Dropped a Seymour Duncan Black Winter in the bridge and a 59 in the neck with gold covers. It sounds absolutely nuts. These ones are great for mods if you're looking into something for metal or heavier music. Also, take some light grit sandpaper to the neck if you get one. I used 1000 and it took away any stick from the finish.
Explorers are so comfortable and has great upper fret access. I`ve got a `78 Greco EX-800. It`s such a good guitar. That Gibson sounds great played clean.
Nice demo and review mate ! Cheers ! 😎🎸🎶🤘( The Jason Hook has a bevel on the upper bout that makes it super. Comfortable to rest your arm on ,also is cut out deeper at the neck /body joint so you get better access ,also has Seymour Duncan 59 neck and JB bridge )
I like to think the guy who came up with the explorer shape was really just trying to make a perfectly-balanced and ergonomic guitar and people were just like “lol crazy metal guitar” and Gibson just rolled with it. Always wanted one, sounds epic through that DSL. Great demo, Shane!
Except for the fact that the Explorer (and V) came out more than a decade before metal did, and were actually discontinued for a while due to lack of sales.
@@colinwilliamgraham Exactly my point, the Moderne clearly never even got put into production. When the V and Explorer did come back into production, Gibson was like "METAL \m/ -_- \m/" and just went with it, even though in stock form they're still pretty suited to the blues and classic rock styles they debuted into.
I just received my 2023 explorer today. I read and watched your review on the guitar and enjoyed both. Just want to make sure I understand your setup here. I have been considering purchasing the Marshall you're playing thru. Your plugged into the amp and The Torpedo Live is for your effects is that correct?
One of the only shaped guitar I don't have. Always seemed a bit bulky to me. The case looks about the same size as a double neck case! One thing Gibson did get right was the headstock. All those strings go through pretty straight, which helps them stay in tune a lot better.
It can definitely blues!!!!! I tried one out at Southpaw Guitars a few years ago and it surprised me with its feel and tone. It would be a contender but having a V really makes owning one redundant. Nice surprise axe her! Cheers!🎸🎸🎸
I've never been a fan but will acknowledge they have stood the test of time. They are a great guitar just not my cup of vodka. I think you did a good job showing it off..................... for "A Blues Pleb".
I have the 2019 model. Great guitar, but I am considering maybe swapping pickups but only because I have a 2018 model Flying V incoming and they both have the same pickups.
When I first saw U2's _Beautiful Day_ video, I wondered what guitar The Edge was playing. And as soon as I learned it was an Explorer, I knew that was the guitar I wanted to play. I now have two Explorers - a standard one and an Explorer Pro (with a smaller body & no pickguard) - and I'm only just getting started on my Explorer collection.
As you should ! I still love my 2019 Gibson too, that why I bought it ! But I still love my 2017 Gibson SG cherry black burst too, and I still love my pair of 2003 models too ! A SG special faded cherry and a Les Paul jr.p90 in TV yellow.
Back in the day my younger brother was into metal and had this crazy looking star shaped guitar that had the thinnest neck I've ever played on. Was ugly as hell, too me, but he loved it. As a matter of fact he was looking for another before covid hit. Beauty truly is in the beholder.
Lots of comments about the excellent balance on the Explorer. Which is true, as well as the comfortable playable positions. And of course, the weight isn't nearly that of a Les Paul. A real warning should be made however, of the actual size of the guitar. These are not axes for confined spaces. You need room around the headstock, AND around the base of the guitar, before you start playing with any gusto. They're great guitars, but they do seem to seek out things to bump against.
I've been playing since the mid 70s never played a Explorer I don't have anything against them but I do have a issue with Gibson. I used to have a Washburn A 10 V that's kind of Explorer shaped. I hear you about the case I hate big rectangular cases when I got a case for my Dean V I got a SKB shaped like the guitar. As far as looks go I will play anything if I like it I don't care what other people think or if it doesn't fit the style of music I play.
Good video and a great fuckin guitar. On a different note. Going back to the odd lesson you do. You should do a lessons on which pentatonic paths you like to play. We all have our certain paths we like to play when we go through the pentatonic positions. I'd like to hear what yours are.
Australians play upside down snd inside out. In America 🇺🇸 this guy is playing a right handed guitar. Love the tones. Don’t forget The Scorpions Jab Mathias. Also that Eric Clapton guy. And Tommie Thayer.
If you like the Explorer but find it a tad on the large size, see if you can find one of the Melody Maker versions that Gibson put out around 2013. It'll need a better pickup and new bridge (wraptail), but they're about 25% smaller than a standard Explorer.
Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick) Jeff Carlisi (38 Special) Rickey Medlocke (Lynyrd Skynryd) Rick Derringer all play or played an Explorer style guitar... Gary Moore had a Hamer Explorer and played a Gibson white and a black Explores ( in the late 90s early 2000s ) for Blues and Rock.
You should have demonstrated Blues tones with the Explorer instead of trying Hard Rock. Would be very informative to compare against your Flying V that sounds amazeing in your hands!
Any lefty Firebirds out there? A 3 way review of the Flying V, Explorer, and Firebird would be a feast for the eyes! (Glad you mentioned the Firebird, Brian Clarke)
Lps are my faves but honestly i love explorers as much. Theyre so cool to look at and they have the sound. Definitely worth it over the sg tele or strat. And as far as lps are concerned my preference is the single coil lps and specifically the customs with the staple pup. If it had to be an hb guitar itd be an explorer because they have more midrange than a standard lp. The p90 equipped lp also has more midrange than the hb guitars as well.
I have a Gordon Smith Explorer, great to play, but the case is longer than my Fender Jazz Bass or Burns Double-Six 12 String cases. I have to drop the back seats to fit it in the car. A lot of fun, I'm glad that I have had the chance to own one but not practical so once the world is back to some sort of normal it will go up for sale.
Hey mate I really like you channel especially because I'm lefty here in down under so you know the struggle is real for us just one think every time you review a lefty for skymusic everytime that I will like to hit the bank account and get one is sold out and their don't have idea when get more stock it happens to me with the Gibson LS, explore and Ibanez prestige kind give up with skymusic at this point.
I've got a 2018 lefty Explorer (it's in my profile pic) and it's my dream guitar that I thought I'd never see in person let alone own one. I have a Schecter E-1 Apocalypse that is just as good though and has better pickups I think, but I still love my Explorer!
Cool. being a '70s player, knew about the IBZ Destroyer maybe same time as EVH. Later, Rick Derringer Live. My GF (now wife) thought he was cute. Great player with an early forked head stock. This was the real mc coy .
I would replace one of the pots with the togle switch so I can reach it and have one volume and one tone. Would be better with more bluesy pick ups too
Ever seen a SX Liquid? Weird looking thing- kinda like a Fender Mustang glued to an Explorer, or an old Fender Swinger. Anyway, I've got one, and I bring it up because I found a use for the big ol' rear horn- Normally 'offset' guitars feel like they're well, 'offset" to me- that is, I feel like the whole thing is leaning towards my fretting hand That big horn redistributes the weight, bringing the neck up towards me, and it's much more comfortable.
First one seen by many was played by Jesse Ed Davis on the Concert for Bangladesh. Clapton played two, one with the wing cut off and one stock. Allen Collins bought one from Clapton I heard in 1976. I had FOUR Les Pauls and the Explorer was more versatile! George Gruhn once said a Korina Explorer was about the best sounding Gibson with humbuckers!
Yeah, that's the Aldo Nova Les Paul. Unfortunately, Trogley also said you cannot find them anywhere because it's rumored that Rick Neilsen owns all of them. I gotta find out if that's true because I'd love an Aldo Nova LP!
Havent you heard the famous ol blues tune by , "blind shameful shane " ...? On his hard to get LP..... "west of the Yarra Delta " !!!!
So besides the shape, what's the same and what's different with the V? Are the pickups the same? Neck profile? Or are these questions for a comparison video?
..... but does it blues? You are a great blues player, don't feel you have to play to the guitar, that thing sounded great clean. I would love to hear you play blues on it through the Fender or Artist amps so we could get a true sample of what it sounds like in a blues context. Now I'm not a very good player but I have owned a Hamer Standard and an Ibanez Destroyer, Explorer copies both as well as a Gibson RD Standard and played blues on all of them. Don't get me wrong, I loved the video and I'm not being critical, I just wish you would have showcased it as a blues guitar. Blues on.
I have a 2018 explorer and tonally its actuallly better then custom shop explorers i have tried as well as many denos of cutomshop explorers i have watched . The custom shop versions witj custombuckers seened darker looser and duller. I also prefered the lizzy hale explorer with the 57 plus in the bridge over the custom shop 58 with custom buckers despite the fact that i much prefer custombuckers in les pauls over 57 classic plus and burstbuckers although i do love burstbuckers 2 and 3 in a les paul alot and are one of my favoirte les paul pickup combos I have always found that 57 classics, classic plus and and burstbukcers 1, 2 and 3 sound much better in lighter gibsons that are all mahogany . I get great clarity out of the the burstbucker 2 in the neck and it can sound very open and chimey with great sustain . Set it so that it is flush with the pickup ring and raise all three treble string pole pieces and lower the low e and a poles while settimg the D pole highet than the E and A poles but lower than the 3 treble string poles and you will get plenty of clarity but still have plenry of drive and girth. Jimmy page neck tones can be had with BB2 in the neck with the right pickup adjusting and amp settings especially if you mag swap it to an A3 mag and with the right bridge pickup you can nail the mid 70s page middle tone.. a lowly 490 r with a short roughcast A5 mag for the bidge and a BB2 either stock or with an A3 or even unoriented A5 will give you the page middle position tones of how the west was won , the song remains the same live album, Earls Court and studip albums like houses of the holy and physical graffitti.
My wife bought me a Gibson Explorer for finishing school. The tone out of it is unreal.
Now that’s a great wife
My friend never finished school. He plays a Glarry.
She's a keeper.
The Explorer, the V and the firebird? Gibson was on fire back in those days. Cool!
I've never owned an Explorer but I've tried them a couple of times. The first thing you notice about the Explorer when you first have it in your lap is the balance. It just sits really well and it's surprisingly comfortable to play, even though it looks outrageous, haha.
Agree with you, I wish my have DF set instead stock PU, very comfortable for sit & play, like Strat, Tele and Dean ML
That's the best sounding piece of furniture, I've ever heard. Lol

A Flying V with that headstock would be cool. I'd buy one lol
The Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) sig model is coming out soon and that is a V with the banana headstock 🤙🏼
Pleb? Seriously? Sweet Explorer! \m/
