I just love how the little Fender Champ starts to break up as Julian's playing intensifies. It's almost as if they both get equally excited in those moments. You really can't beat the tele/champ combination for pure and honest guitar expression, beautiful!
Man... This is unreal! What a playing! What a timing! What a tone! Telecaster and a small tweed amp. So traditional but the way he plays is simply changing the game. I am astonished.
Finally a Jass guitarist that plays with his soul and brings it through the amplifier unlike so many that just play all the techniques without any soul. Fantastic control and on a Telecaster ❤ LOVE LOVE LOVE
My favorite moment is around 2:20 when Julian lets his passion drive him too fast and he stumbles. But unlike many other musicians, with Julian a mistake just becomes this human, raw, personal moment that makes this performance special. He'd rather run with the energy and stumble than staying cool and collected in the name of "professionalism." I love that about him so much. Julian, thanks for posting this, and I need to repeat what I said to you when I met you in Minneapolis -- you + your tele + a trio = just magical. Please keep making music with this setting.
I loved this too! So many guitarists would turn a 300bpm burner into a head-down chops-fest - but Julian leaves so much space, and when he does jump in it's full of joy, enthusiasm and interplay with the band.
I love this too, but I want to let you know there is a long tradition of jazz musicians doing this. Blues musicians too. It is very fun to be able to see it so up close and personal with high res video.
I remember Jeff Beck said he didn’t use a lot of effects because he wanted to get the sound from the guitar like the guys did in the fifties and early sixties. That is what this guy is doing. It’s all in his fingers. Great performance from all guys in the band.
This is insane. I have to come back time and again: the sound and technical mastery of the three are astonishing but completely subservient to an unquenchable flow of musical ideas and telepathic interplay. Improvised music at its most gripping, compelling and - yes - fun.
This is incredible, the way he plays is so eloquent and coherent. And the guy at 1:13 is really into it and that's what it's all about among many other things/aspects of/about music.
I love how the hip new thing in jazz guitar is country. Frisell probably started the current trend, but it's been going on since Western Swing. Even Scofield is in on it with that one album he did. Lage is so damn good at it.
Know it? I *wrote* it! [rimshot] (I trust you know the absolutely-as-vile-as-possible phraseology of the set-up leading to that ancient saloon/barrelhouse "blue" joke punchline. This joke was an old chestnut when this tune was brand-new.) Lage's playing is just built out of pure win, that's all. Cheers!
This puts a big wide grin on my face. Exuberant, tasteful joyful "in-the-moment" improvisation. Music made with love for the idiom but not standing still, merely copying past masters. Lage is *our* very present, in-the-moment master.
Marco Luparia Musicians are always going through the same paths of listening to artists.... This is not a coincidence. We musicians are paying attention to the best. Insane.
What's really cool about Julian's use of a tele is his ability to employ its broad dynamic range with such subtly and nuance in character. He brings a very special touch to the instrument.
Im pretty sure Julians the best guitar player who has ever lived. No one i can think of is more musical than him. He will go down in history along side hendrix, metheny, pass, etc.
Amazing guitarist...amazing musicians. I saw him play live years ago at the Regatta Bar in Cambridge Massachusetts he was great then but has even gotten better.
Literally clicked through to your profile because of this comment, and stumbled upon your band's amazing music by accident. You now have a fan because of this chance drooling over Julian Lage's music. Life is cool sometimes
Damn. I want to play at that venue someday. That looks like one of the sickest venues and I have seen many, not played in many, but I have seen many ok ones. I would definitely walk amd trun around a bunch in that venue so everyone could see me a bit.
I started listening before I saw the picture and I thought it was Pat with 80 (purely based on the sound of the timbre of the estimate). Kind of amazing he can get that sort of sound out of a telly..
Can we also take a second to appreciate that color grading? I don't know much about filmmaking, but damn all those colors just shine through.
Kind of HDR effect applied or/and emphasized saturation, I guess...
2:15 , go for it Julian!! No one hardly ever does, good to see someone playing with some attitude and balls.
Jazzer Caster he's so good. Just blows my mind every time.

totally

Like Hendrix said, if he’s not making mistakes when playing Live - he’s not happy. Got to push the envelope.
Paco de Lucia said the same thing, better a mistake with the feeling
He truly touches the instrument so different then anyone before him. I love it.
Joe Soffel I know, his Tele sounds just like mine, except not at all!
Joe Soffel I'm sorry ... He sounds exactly sooooooo Not at all like me...ha ha ha
Joe Soffel yeah man, totally can tell he's super inspired by Chet Atkins and those types of guitarists
His use of occasional dissonance is awesome - keeps you on your toes
The power of the Telecaster! Most versatile guitar of all time

His phrasing and dynamic range are sick.
I’m here because of Adam neely and he doesn’t disappoint!
yeah - me too ! jl is great !
Same here!
Yeah man! Proud of musical content creators in RUclips on educating the young people!(wow I’m 18 but I sounded like a boomer JAHAH)
Same
Same over here. I am not dissatisfied.
I love how he lets the music breathe so much. His use of dynamics is unique. Really brings out the best of his instrument.
That tone is incredible, never heard a tele sounding quite like this
Right. There an interview somewhere where he explains the string types (just D'Addario 11 or 10) and pickups. Nothing super-special though.
This tone comes from a 50s Fender Champ... A 5 Watt Amp.
DAMN it sounds so sweet.... Maple neck and everything

The bar of jazz guitar has been raised up very high by this young Man..what and amazing player truly breathtaking.
I love how the hip new thing in jazz guitar is country. Frisell probably started the current trend, but it's been going on since Western Swing. Even Scofield is in on it with that one album he did. Lage is so damn good at it.
Fantastic, fearless playing. ... And Julian always picks great material. Who knew this tune, besides me?
it's an original on his newest record.
Actually, "Persian Rug" is not an original; it was composed in 1927 by Neil Moret. ... Yes, I have the album, which is excellent.
Cheers!
I had to come back to this again...I love it! the sound, the energy, the vibe...so good!
Definitely my inspiration at the moment. Loving this, so much natural talent and uniqueness.
For me too.
Your soul really shines through when you play, and I wish everyone's soul was as beautiful as Julians.
Very glad to be able to share the enjoyment of this with you folks. Hope all is well with y'all.
This is so awesome, hope theres more footage too!
I just adoooore your playing! So talented, swift, playful and rythmic! I'm a guitar player and this really inspires me, and makes me smile...
Thanks Julian. This is true soulfood...nourishing to the core 🙏
Geeeez, every time I watch this I get an amazing warm feeling inside. Incredible playing
I love the incorporation of a bunch of very country licks into a jazz tune
This cat killing it! so much gusto! vulnerability, and honesty in his playin
This puts a big wide grin on my face. Exuberant, tasteful joyful "in-the-moment" improvisation.
Music made with love for the idiom but not standing still, merely copying past masters. Lage is *our* very present, in-the-moment master.
So delicate and clean
How are his movements sooo smooth?!?! Its not even human.
Awesome playing all around. I am completely mesmerized by Wollesen's left side ride.
how nicely played, filmed, edited and produced!
thx jules, scott, kenny and the team behind!
I would pay a million to hear this dude play with Brian Blade
THIS.
Marco Luparia Musicians are always going through the same paths of listening to artists.... This is not a coincidence. We musicians are paying attention to the best. Insane.
I've been thinking this too lol
Really really cool! I have to listen the live album, it's awesome for sure, Julian is such a great musician, not only guitar player
Fantastic! Come to Canada! Soon! Hope to see/hear more from this gig!
I want to look at someone the way the bass player looks at Julian
Looks of amazement in the audience eyes says it all
Insane trio!

Man, these guys are firing on all cylinders.
2:14 the bassist is also sitting in the crowd lol
A glitch in the Matrix.
lol..
Scott Colley long ago transcended space and time.
A visual metaphor
You just made my day- the way your time stamp had me looking out for him until Julian moves out of the way. Thank you
Big Tom Waits fan. Just discovered this. Superb! Honest music.
So nice to hear classic tones in modern era.
If this was on Blu Ray I would totally buy it!
Perfect !!
Let's play THAT again! Genius.
Lovely public, strong conection!. Lage, a magic man!
this made me smile so thoroughly just now
Amazing guitarist...amazing musicians. I saw him play live years ago at the Regatta Bar in Cambridge Massachusetts he was great then but has even gotten better.
One of the greatest ever
Big smiles here! HUGE SMILES! I love it!
Bravery and freedom have always been inherent elements of jazz that differentiate it from other genres of music.
🕊️
Sonny Rollins
Man I love Neil Moret and it's nice to hear one of his tunes in a more modern context
Morét is good, but have you heard the songs of Charles N. Daniels? ;)
@zenobardot blecch, Charles N. Daniels is a cheap knock-off of the greatness that is Charles N. Dan- I mean Neil Moret
Kenny and Scott make a very great job, amazing!!!
Love that drumming !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Too much. such good fun. People love Julian, don't they.
What a delicate touch- and the tone - I never heard a tele sound so warm!
how a great playing!!!
Respect you!
how good are they ?? amazing i beleieve !! nobody greater !!
Hell yeah, Julian. You're fearless. :)
The lick at 2:42 omg it's the first time I've spotted a lick without reading it in the comments I'm so pumped ❤️
Insane. I have no words.
The guy at 0:15 looks like he's having a blast.

Man, you are incredibly weird.

TylerMcCarthyMusic what a pleb
Great guitar sound. Especially enjoy the softer touches, sounds particularly vibrant
Makes me feel good what an incredible performance !
Hey Julian? Big fan of Danny Gatton? I just realized that my favorite guitar players use telecasters! Thank you, you´re really an inspiration.
Like gazing at a beautiful antique Qashqai!
PLEASE make the rest of this show available!
Very inspiring, need to buy a tele again.
his playing is so perfect :')
Bloody marvellous!

So great. Thank you for sharing.
Great work Julian, real craftsmanship.

Its like the Ahmad Jamal Trio but with a guitar
YES
Please do a live DVD!
The tone that Julian Lage and Ted Green can get out of theses teles are amazing.
Damn. I want to play at that venue someday. That looks like one of the sickest venues and I have seen many, not played in many, but I have seen many ok ones. I would definitely walk amd trun around a bunch in that venue so everyone could see me a bit.
This telecaster fits you so well Julian!!
Man, I've never heard anything like this. Such a versatile imagination.
Impresionante
insane saw the show was incredible great capture
Brilliant !
I started listening before I saw the picture and I thought it was Pat with 80 (purely based on the sound of the timbre of the estimate). Kind of amazing he can get that sort of sound out of a telly..
