Many a happy day playing on those downs , looking for golf balls on the golf course, playing in the chalk pit about 200 yards down the hill , if you go right up to the obelisk and walk down the hill facing shanklin you would pass froggy pond , not sure if it’s still there , and then down to Fremantle Gate , the old gate house was a ruin when I was a nipper, it’s now been restored and is a summer rental, we would often play in the grounds and the house of Appledurcombe , but you had to keep your wits about you because the caretaker was a one Herbie Simpkins , a ww2 royal marine , who would have been in his late fifties and still intimidating , who would chase us out of the grounds , this was in the day when kids would be out all day and only go home for dinner! Thanks for posting .👍

@@WightWanderer Guys do the old black gang road (Niton Undercliff) there is car park at the end of it and you can walk over the hill and view the magnificent St Catherines lighthouse as well as walk along to the old Black Gang chine which has sadly been gobbled up by the sea but there are great sites to view and lots of buildings and debri from times gone by!
