The daughter (and it's usually a daughter) is always the same too, a parentified lonely stick in the mud who is her mother's living emotional crutch but also the physical manifestation of her mom's resentment. This is an indie film. Jeb's going to be terrible and hit on the daughter the morning after the mom brings him home after their first date. Mom will be passed out in the hall and jeb will be wearing only the sheet he pulled off mom's bed. In the end the daughter will realize mom's not going to get better, and she'll drive off to go to college that mom had no idea she applied for.
nah, new films are gonna embrace the not so typical happy endings. they will give you a happy part and a sad part. like the mother od's but her child becomes a much more stable person because of what she went through.

And then at the very end of the movie, she makes up with her adult daughter who finally understands that her mother has always loved her and just has her own beautifully toxic way of showing it.
The full on gremlin voice comes just before the kid runs away and they're reunited, no problems fixed and mom's still single but they learn to be happy about it. Cuz mom has a good attitude now for no reason at all.

The kid is a gentle effeminate boy who knows he is different but doesn't yet quite understand why. He has a creative spirit which is nurtured by his mother but she can't quite seem to give him all he needs. The film is based on the writer/director's own life growing up which is why the chaotic mother is written in way that is loving but also has an undercurrent of anger and resentment that can only come from the mother wound of a neglected child. There are a number of comments from film bros on the films' reddit thread that call the chaotic mother a 'heinous bitch'. The actress who plays chaotic mother will go on to star in Guardians of the Galaxy VII playing a spunky space mechanic.
This woman is expert at characterizing the "just beneath" quality of mental instability and then abusiveness that leaps out once the fake exterior is no longer capable of being sustained.
The scene where the mom cries and dances to Mamma Mia is beautiful, soul wrenching, and captivating. A scene that removes all sense of self and contrasts such an uplifting song with such a dark twisted moment. Haunting, poignant, and will live on in my mind forever. "Hit Indie Movie Vaguely Inspired by Lady Bird and Slated for Several Awards" is one for the history books.

Jeb is salt-of-the-Earth, has one of those pre-fab tiny homes by a lake that always has a loon in it, no matter the region, strands of Christmas lights framing the carport to make a little magic out of nothing, plays a mandolin or a squeezebox because he’s quirky like that. He’s got a pickup truck he has genuine affection for and won’t drive anything else. But he’s just a regular guy. Oh, and he’s ripped. And white.
He also has severe anger issues, that'll become apparent a month into the relationship, when he stops charming the mom with "perfect boyfriend" facade and starts being increasingly abusive. Also, the daughter doesn't like him even during the "perfect boyfriend" phase and he's extremely upset about it.
Another incredible performance. Don't forget about the scene where the mother does something inappropriate with the teenagers boyfriend, like having a beer with him, smoking weed or generally being weirdly relaxed about him sneaking him at 3am but also being outraged and angry at her daughter for it the next day.
This was my mum. Literally that song at 0:52 too. She'd be blasting her music at 4:00am on a school night and try and get me to dance with her and have a drink together even though i was like 10 and just wanted to go back to damn sleep, then she'd be too hungover to take me to school in the morning so i had the day off.

The daughter (and it's usually a daughter) is always the same too, a parentified lonely stick in the mud who is her mother's living emotional crutch but also the physical manifestation of her mom's resentment. The girl, probably named something like Mia, will have to be shown how to loosen up by a quirky manic-pixie dream friend or by falling in love with a boy; Mia will eventually have to choose between her mother and this boy.
And the mom will be angry at her for daring to be an individual person at the young age of 25+ and the movie never shows this as unfair

The kid is a gentle effeminate boy who knows he is different but doesn't yet quite understand why. He has a creative spirit which is nurtured by his mother but she can't quite seem to give him all he needs. The film is based on the writer/director's own life growing up which is why the chaotic mother is written in way that is loving but also has an undercurrent of anger and resentment that can only come from the mother wound of a neglected child. There are a number of comments from film bros on the films' reddit thread that call the chaotic mother a 'heinous bitch'. The actress who plays chaotic mother will go on to star in Guardians of the Galaxy VII playing a spunky space mechanic.

He’s got a pickup truck he has genuine affection for and won’t drive anything else. But he’s just a regular guy. Oh, and he’s ripped. And white.
He also has severe anger issues, that'll become apparent a month into the relationship, when he stops charming the mom with "perfect boyfriend" facade and starts being increasingly abusive.
Also, the daughter doesn't like him even during the "perfect boyfriend" phase and he's extremely upset about it.
