    I grew up in Idaho, and Boise State at the time was more like a lower-level college than the sort that you would think would ever get to compete on this stage. It was pretty impressive that they got that far, even if a lot of people didn't think they had a chance, and they showed that they were worth looking at. I'm happy for them. Even if I don't really support the team regularly, I would for a game like this because it's just really nice to see such an underdog come out on top for a change. The college football system needs to be shaken up like this because it's pretty prejudiced and certain directions. And the fact that they so perfectly executed so many trick plays really shows the importance of strategic thinking in this game so that was pretty cool.

    Still might be my favorite game I’ve ever watched in real time. I didn’t have a reason to care about either team and I was celebrating like I won the lottery when Boise hit that hook and lateral to tie the game.
    Pro tip whenever you’re talking about college teams: NEVER leave off things like “State” or “Tech” out of their names. Most states have several teams, and only saying half of the name usually means you’re talking about another team (and frequently they’re rivals).

      I met a lady at the airport after the game. She had to tell her story. She was visiting family and they weren't even sports fans. They heard about David vs. Goliath game so they thought they would check it out. By the ending they were jumping and screaming, and immediately wend to Walmart to buy Boise State gear. Unless you were an OU fan, that game was a magical moment that drew you in no matter who you are.

    For those that don't know, University of Oklahoma (OU) is a traditional powerhouse college football school in a major football conference. Meanwhile, Boise State University was a lightly regarded school in a second-tier conference. BSU had to be perfect that year to even play in the Fiesta Bowl and while OU didn't have a perfect season, they were the bigger, more talented team.
    From the opening, it was obvious that BSU was motivated to play while OU didn't take their opponent very seriously. To their credit, OU battled back and made a game of it. For BSU to win was a major shocker and put Boise State on the national radar screen as a Giant Killer.

    Regarding The interviewer/proposal at the end; the network was just trying to buy time for the trophy presentation and had the interviewer find someone else to interview. When the interviewer found Johnson, he asked if he would do an interview and Johnson told him he would, but he was going to propose to his girlfriend during it. The producers were going to cut away from the interview and were in the interviewers' earpiece indicating that they were going to move on. Since Johnson had not said anything about proposing or done it, the interviewer, not wanting the camera to cut away before he did, said it to make sure that it would be broadcasted live, and the producers didn't cut away. "“I stepped in with the line because my producer didn’t know the story that he said he wanted to propose, and they are yelling in my ear come on you have to wrap, I was thinking in my mind ‘how subtly can I do this?’ I had asked a couple questions, and I was kind of looking at him like, ‘didn’t you say something about a proposal?’”. He probably could have said something like "you told me you had a question for your girlfriend" but I guess he wanted to just say what was going to happen, so the producers didn't leave the interview. They are still married as well.

    In 2006, The Fiesta Bowl was one of 4 major Bowl games played yearly + one Extra Bowl at one of
    those 4 venues, The National Championship game known as the BCS {Bowl Championship Series}.
    The National Championship featured the # 1 & # 2 teams as determined by the poll system. There
    were 6 BCS auto qualifier Conferences {ACC, Big East, Big 10, Big XII, SEC, Pac 10}. The Champion
    of each BCS Conference would receive an auto bid to a BCS Bowl that was a Conference Tie-in.
    Big 10 Champ vs Pac 10 Champ {Rose Bowl}
    ACC Champ vs Big East Champ {Orange Bowl}
    SEC Champ vs At Large Bid {Sugar Bowl}
    Big XII Champ vs At Large Bid {Fiesta Bowl}
    The "At Large Bids" were always high ranking teams from the BCS 6 Conferences. Other conferences, known as the Mid Major conferences {today known as the Group of 5 conferences}, would routinely get snubbed for one of the BCS Conference non Champion Teams, or Notre Dame, who is an Independent team without a Conference, but received BCS status and Bowl consideration, if they won at least 9 of their games.
    Outside of the BCS, in the 2006 post season, there were 27 other Bowl venues. However, none of those paid out nearly the dollar amount that the BCS did. And every Bowl appearance payment went to the conferences to divide up the revenue per program.
    This was the issue for the Mid Major teams, as they really never got a chance, and every year, more than one team from the same BCS conferences would gain access ... meaning the rich get richer {especially Notre Dame who didn't share the revenue with anyone, being Independent}
    The difference in Bowl Venue payout would be, $1.2 million for non BCS Bowl vs $17 million per BCS Bowl.
    To be qualified to participate in a Post Season Bowl, your team needed to finish with at least a .500 record.
    Even then, most other venues were tied in with Major Conferences. So, to be ensured a chance to a Bowl for a Mid Major, you either had to win your Conference, or finish with 9 to 10 wins.
    Boise State was the first Breakthrough team to be a Mid Major Conference opponent in a BCS Bowl game. This 2006 Fiesta Bowl was that game, finishing the season undefeated, and winning their Bowl.
    Ohio State was the consensus # 1 Ranked team in going into the Post Season, being 12-0.
    Florida was Ranked # 2 in the BCS system, despite having 1 loss, they were 12-1 for the Bowl.
    The Fiesta Bowl was broadcast before the National Championship. And the media was trying to force the BCS out, so they could get a College Football Playoff. Whenever a team was snubbed from the Mid Majors, they would always use them as a Playoff talking point. In this case, not only did Boise State win the Bowl game, being undefeated gave them a better record than Ohio State's up coming opponent in Florida. So the media had a field day using it all the way up to the National Title game.
    Florida Head Coach, Urban Meyer, used that as a motivational tool for his team, saying; "Look, the media says you guys don't even belong in the game".
    It must have worked, too. Because Florida went on to drub Ohio State 41-14. Making the Florida Gators National Champions.

      "Boise State was the first Breakthrough team to be a Mid Major Conference opponent in a BCS Bowl game. This 2006 Fiesta Bowl was that game, finishing the season undefeated, and winning their Bowl."
      Actually that distinction is held by the University of Utah in the 2004 Fiesta Bowl. They beat Pittsburgh 35-7. Utah was from the Mountain West conference.

    • @Jaems_Scott
      @Jaems_Scott 18 дней назад

      @@chrishoobs8599 = Yes, I am aware of the 2004 Fiesta Bowl, and, no offense to Utah or their fans, I do not consider that a Break Through, even though they were the first Mid Major to play in a BCS Bowl --- They were paired with Pitt from the Big East. During that season, the Big East was down, considerably from where they had been {for obvious reasons} and the talk was whether or not the Big East should even retain their BCS Conference Status, especially with the 4 way Conference Championship tie in '04 --- Utah wasn't facing as much adversity to receive their BCS bid [save for the mandatory Undefeated record]. And, were actually favored to beat Pitt going into the Bowl.
      It doesn't take away from what Utah did, as that helped to propel them forward and eventually receive an invitation into the Pac-10 (12). It's just, they were paired against Pitt for the purpose of devaluing the game. It was a slap in the face, by giving them the least desirable opponent.
      Boise St on the other hand, was still garnering push back from the polls, but earned their spot vs a BCS poster child, Oklahoma. When the BCS selections came out, there was no choice other than to put Boise up against Oklahoma, because the alternative was Louisville, and the Orange Bowl wanted the them as Wake Forest's opponent.
      The Orange Bowl was tied to the ACC, with a Big East option [including Notre Dame; but the Sugar Bowl got their bid]. So the committee figured the only way to get people to travel would be to get the most local team to face Wake. (easier to get people from Kentucky to travel to Miami, than Idaho).
      And with the Big XII tie-in to the Fiesta Bowl, they were force to take Boise St ---- Which was a blessing in disguise, as it turned into the best BCS Bowl match up that season.

    Bowl games are one off post season games between two teams of a different conference.
    The 1st was the Rose bowl between the Big10 & PAC12 conference champions . The # has grown to 43 bowl games a yr now .
    The 6 New yrs day Bowl Games are the premiere games play by the top ranked teams .
    In addition to bowl games we now have playoff games since 2014 (only 4 teams) But the 2024 season will increase that to 12 playoff teams ! So a very exciting yr coming up.
    There are 134 teams/9 conf at the top level of Division 1 FBS college football. (Football Bowl Subdivision)

    Love this game to death, made the college football world notice Boise state head coach Chris Petersen, who would later leave Boise State for The University of Washington (my favorite school where I have season tickets) and his 2016 season at Washington is one that none of us will ever forget, in particular, their match up against rival Oregon, who had beat Washington the prior 11 matchups. Unfortunately for me, that 2016 game against Oregon was at Oregon and I had to watch it on TV. Coach Petersen would leave retire from coaching following the 2019 season. Washington vs Oregon is one of the most heated rivalries on the west coast, dating back to 1948, and in 2023 The Washington vs Oregon matchup would be their greatest yet, both teams going into the game undefeated, and both in the top 10, the first time ever they would face off as top 10 opponents. It was the greatest game I've ever attended. They would have a rematch in Las Vegas for the conference championship at the end of the season, and I made the trip for that game and watched it from a suite, Probably the 2nd greatest game I've ever attended, and both teams were in the top 5 and the winner would advance to the semi finals for the national championship. I recommend watching both of those games.
