Dev of "Ghost of the Arcade" here. Thank you so much for playing my game and for your incredibly helpful feedback in the judging video. Since the jam submission I have released a couple of updates (currently sitting at post-jam version 7) for the game, turning it into what I would have wanted the submitted version to be. I'm going to continue working on the game. And your feedback gave me quite a few ideas for further improvement. So thanks a lot again 🧡
@@bes03c Thanks 😊 Well, it was a Game Boy game jam. So there was no other option than to make a GB game. I wanted to try a couple of things I had not done before, like a 3D-ish racing game, which is not really supported by the engine.
Great list! :) FYI for anyone who tries "Hermano" by the Pat Morita Team, it's not until the end of the second stage where the player is introduced to one of the most fun, clever, and unique gameplay mechanics I've ever seen in a 2D platformer.
I'm still disappointed that mine didn't even get to be properly judged, but it's cool to see all the ones that *did* make it. I can definitely see why most of them were chosen. Honestly, I'm glad I made mine regardless since it gave me a chance to use something other than RPG Maker for once, and it led to me making one of my favorite character designs (Simply cause she isn't human or human-like). ((Also my title screen was at the start and end along with a bunch of others, so I at least got to point at that and say "That's mine!" Lol))
Wonderful to see all the new games being made. The quality of them just keeps getting better and better. Really impressed with what is being made in GBStudio, and how far people are pushing the engine. Thanks for going through the final 15 and showing us the rankings.
The good thing about these homebrow shares is, so far all of them you've shared have been no longer available for sale on physical media so they don't cost me a thing. Although, sometimes that's depressing too.
This comment doesn't make any sense. None of these are available physically, and even if they were, it doesn't stop you from acquiring them digitally... furthermore, it would be good if there were good original games still available physically, even if you personally don't want to buy them
Ok, so I'm a retro nerd that CLEARLY has not gone far enough down the rabbit hole. A couple years ago I discovered the BennVenn Cart dumper to save my pokemon save files for battery replacements, and also put an oversized IPS screen in my childhood gameboy. Man that backlight is great!!! Since then I've played it here and there, picked up a few titles I remembered having ages ago as a kid that were lost to time, and looking into what awesome games I've not played yet. Some physical copies of the better offerings on the GBC are VERY expensive, Resident Evil, Metal Gear, and Shantae come to mind. Then I learned about the Everdrives maybe a year ago, and now with our first child on the way in a couple weeks here I'm looking to shore up my handheld potential! Now I come to find, on today July 7th 2024, that people are MAKING ORIGINAL TITLES?!?!?!?! I'm here to tell you, I couldn't be more exited!!! Side note, I'm not even close to a developer or have any of the skills, but I've thought a lot recently how cool it would be to make a video game... Thinking about it, this would be such a great place to start... BUT HOW?!
My top 5 I have to agree Hermano looked the most awesome! I love games that flip the script so in 2nd is Enceladus where your the monster in the air ducts looking for humans to hunt! 3rd is Nunya, which looks like another good platformer! 4th is Ghost of the Arcade what a cool concept! That is like the most tubular place to haunt ever! & Kaiju Kai Kai in 5th because its just too cute! Shout out to Hidden Gems that game looks good but as stated it doesn't fit the monster theme! Thanks again for the Game Boy Retro Break!
Pat Morita Team make some really nice Speccy games too. There's always a layer of polish that set them apart from other homebrew devs. Well deserved win. Also, well done to everyone else who entered - you've certainly achieved way more than anything I could pull out! :)
Great to hear about so many new promising Game Boy games! I actually like that some have a less obvious “monster”, from the rats point of view the exterminator surely is a monster 😁
Great video, looking forward to playing some of these. Question, what is that illuminated game boy you have? (To the right if the screen) custom piece or retail?
Exterminator developer here late as per usual. Thanks for the insight and feedback on the game! Honestly regretting not making that tutorial screen or stage, but, hindsight is 20/20 as they say.
I found the trailer for Chantey not long ago and it looked very interesting but I had no idea it was a rhythm game. Nunya has a great art style. So good as I watched I thought, what if this was a top down game? I was imagining this Nun wandering around Victorian London at night, dark alley ways, taverns, looking for a missing person from the parish or something. It looks like the rightful winner, won. It looks up there with an official release. It had some colour in the pallet. I'm guessing that [or any that I've mentioned] won't be playable on a DMG?
Always love the homebrew vids! Quality of these games looked a bit disappointing, but I appreciate the time limits. Feed it souls is a game I have already played a while back, surely they can't just submit a pre made game? Also your frustration is palpable that so many games didn't use the intended theme haha
Some very impressive games. I couldn't help but notice how stingy the scoring was though. All the games were scored below 4/5 except for the top pick which had an aggregate score of exactly 4.0.
Thanks for watching! If you’re interested in seeing my judging process for all the games, check it out here -

Your gane looks so fun. I am curious, what were your inspirations? Why the GameBoy?

I can’t wait to download and play the game looked so cool man such a great concept!
@@wyattalexander4041 Thanks. Let me know what you think 😊
@@ForbiddenNickname so by 3d ish racing game do you mean like f1 race, which is already on the gb?
Exterminator , where you kill "innocent" creatures sounds like a 5/5 for fitting the theme of "you are the monster" TBH
I was thinking the same.
Glad someone got what I was going for!
In other words, when we will roaches and rats....... its not them that are the monster......... its us. WOW

Isn't this a cool video? It's so wholesome. Part of why I love this channel. Hope you're doing great, D

So many cool new GB homebrews on the horizon! Thank you for your awesome videos, sir. You’re one of the best on RUclips.
More games I can add to my EZ flash.
Great video ! Thanks !
Gameboy is still so amazing, love these homebrew games.
All of these games look so great! Thanks for the awesome videos!

Kinda of excited to play some of these and seen them finished!!
Ghost in the arcade and Hermano looked to be my favorite!

@@viridionwaves it makes plenty of sense. Some of us like to own physical media.
I liked Lightseeker's aesthetics and The Host's creativity.
This is so cool, what an amazing group of creative people!

Looks like the site for game #4 "The Host" is no longer. Bummer, would have loved to try that one out.
Oh wow that first game looks beautiful

Amazing ✊🏽 🔥🔥🔥
This is so cool
Slayer The Hawk would benefit from an attract-mode demo showing you can grab and drop stuff.
And someone else doing the sound.

as a WH40K fan, that second game in this video looks hilariously awesome

Great video! Not a big fan of the GB Studio's physics engine. Movement feels quite sloppy in most games.
Amazing run down. Your visuals and graphics are so nice to look at, your explanations are super on point. Great video as always!
Physical releases plzzz
Ah... Parodi Susana pasti
It's probably too time consuming for a game jam but I'd love not RPGs.
This guy seems to miss the nuanced points of what a “monster” is.
Are you guys interested in making a hardcover artwork and guidebook for your game? If you are please contact me.
The theme aspect is silly and obviously holds all the titles back.
