Drawing Roving from a Drum Card

  • If you are one of the many people who would rather spin from a prepared roving than from a carded batt of fiber - this is how you can pull roving from your drum carded batt. It's not difficult and only takes a few minutes extra time after the fiber is well carded.
I am demonstrating with alpaca, but it works just as well with wool, dog hair and many blends. The only piece of equipment you'll need is a "diz" - and I made mine from the lid off a milk carton - you can also use a lid from yogurt or any other container.
Watch for my new series of 3 videos on making a multi-colored roving fromthe drum card - any drum card. I will start with dying the fiber, go into carding the fiber and drawing off a roving, and end with spinning the fiber. This will be Dying Outside the Lines 1A, 1B and 1C - -
Later I hope to do more videos on playing with color "outside the lines" on your drum card " maybe even your combs.

Oh my goodness, how simple and neat..... the BEST inventions are so sweet. Thank you for all your brilliant ideas..... learning here in the UK is really hit and miss but I'm becoming quite expert thanks to my transatlantic spinning sisters!

Thank you so much for this wonderful instructional video. I've been ripping the batts into strips, this is infinitely better. My carder is calling to me.
    Thank you so much!!

How clever!! My husband is buying me a drum carder for Mother's Day, and I always wondered how I could possibly get roving off of it instead of a batt. Now I know!

Thank you very much for the demonstration. You are a very smart lady. I am going try it. But, first I need to get myself a carder. I have so many fiber in my house. I need one:)

@felterone Glad to help. I used to tear in strips too, but really prefer this. It works on lots of carders, at least all I've tried or helped people with. Makes a much neater roving. Happy Thanksgiving.

Signed in as RallyJudge, my other channel, and have forgotten my Spin2Weave password for RUclips. Sigh.
Alora Ivory, I've done tons of alpaca, even short fine show fleece. The rainbow EZ surprise Jacket was done with alpaca. I used a burnishing brush to pack the fiber onto the drum. (I've done this with Louet "roving carder" and my Patrick Green Super Card. ) Pull slowly and carefully. I don't use a licker at all when pulling fiber until the very end - to clean off any residue on the drum.
You need to use short drawing strokes, like you would pulling fiber thru a diz from combs. hand over hand. Don't draw/draft out more than about an inch or two (the fiber length) at once if the fiber is very short. It may also help not to pack the drum too full, altho I'm always packing in every bit I can - and using a medium dis - poked with a large embroidery/wool needle. I've also used a trussing needle. Do not make the hole in the diz too small - and don't make it too big. The fiber pulled thru even a small hole (SMALLER than a green pea, more like a yellow split pea size) will fluff out and be larger than you can imagine.
For smaller roving instead of a smaller diz, use less fiber on the drum card.
Hope this helps. Good luck. (You can see me with my dogs on Yourube under RallyJudge - )

You make the best videos! I am learning a lot from them. One question: what did you use to make the holes for your dizzes? It would seem that if I used a screwdriver on a plastic lid, it would make a jagged hole that would hinder the dizzing process.

a big button would mak a great diz....the hole will be smooth and they would have different sizes you could get...

I have used a button but managed to loose my favorite one and I also needed extra to share when I helped with a big demo at an Alpaca festival so went to the milk cap. (I also have a real horn diz).

Wow, I didn't know it was so easy! Thank you for such a great video! I have a question, how much did the Patrick Green Supercard run? I looked on their website and they want you to call for the price so I am guessing it's pretty expensive :-/

I tried this method with alpaca, the staple was circa 2" which made it trickier, but when I tried to create the roving off the drum, the small licker pulled a lot of the fiber loose.. Any suggestions on how I could avoid this hiccup?
