Khrushchev made the transfer of Crimea to Ukraine to commemorate the Union of Russia and Ukraine 300th anniversary of the ties between the 2 nations. Russian Secretary Generals have wanted Crimea back ever since Brezhnev's time as the powerful Bear of Russia. Yes, Sevastopol is a desired strategic location for the Russian navy. I hope Ukraine keeps Crimea. The short Russian Bear of today is like Russian czars of the past that kept gaining more land to grow Russia. Stopping the land grabbing Russians is top priority. If Russia should win the war, it will embolden Putin. His head will be so big he can't keep his head straight.
