Great warning. Good to know. Since it does have GPS, one would think DJI would have the RTH no matter what mode you’re flying in. My guess is they’ll add it…thanks to you pointing this out. Great job Darren.
You’re completely right!!! Without RTH I won’t buy one for sure! With my previous Air, I had many situations where the RTH saved the drone and me! If I’m filming a beach and I lose contact, bye bye drone. Or above a car… bye bye insurance
If RTH is available with the controller, what if you set the RTH up with it AND shouldn't it be able to RTH in all control modes after it is set up on the controller? I say that because the Neo has the RTH imbedded in it (it Returns to Home if signal is lost with the controller -- saying it has the RTH embedded in the drone firmware)
That would be an interesting experiment that shouldn't be hard to accomplish if, you have a compatible controller. My guess is the NEO askes the controller for configuration every time it powers up. I that config differs from its default, it will change until it powers up again, and the phone app tells it nothing, so it defaults to landing in place. There's gotta be at least one person in here that has a controller and can try this. Hint, hint.
Agree. Just had a fly away after a dronie off of my roof terrace. Did get it back undamaged but glad I bought the care package. It does seem to be easilly confused and loses its RTH position in autonomous mode which is very risky.
Good video. Basically, know its limits with whatever “controller” you’re using and how far you’re going. As it is with the phone, it’s not made to do what a mini can. That said, for the money, it still seems like a good buy.
I asked that same question, and all I got was comments like you need to learn to fly better etc. Sorry, the object of NEO is to palm it, hit the mode button, let it do it's thing and come back. How do you wave it in an extra foot if it is 2 foot further out over a cliff or 2 foot off the end of a pier over water etc. They should have some sort of hand jester that it looks for to come back to your, like waiving your hands above your head like an inflatable mad man at a used car lot etc. Or let you yell oat it etc.
Just a thought ! All real fpv quads do not have return to home, this is a cheap fantastic value quad, I do own one and absolutely love it ..mostly in fpv mode with my avata2 gear … the neo is my everyday go to quad. Cheap fun 😊👏
Yep.... I lost my Neo 2 days after purchase. Lost signal and auto landed into the sea 10 feet in front of me. Great drone but controlerless flight needs care.
The RTH absent on the phone app is worrying, one hopes that they can fix that with a firmware update either on the app or in the drone's AI itself. From what I can see, the only way to "manually" trigger a RTH facsimile is to hold up your hand to the drone and it will fly itself back to you as long as you keep in mind the actual flight time so as to be on top of the battery drain.
@DMProductions I was halfway through this video, and when you had mentioned the lack of Return To Home (RTH), I immediately went to DJI's website. Then I saw they specified that RTH was available. I was like what the...??!! But then, when you mentioned the controller compatibility, and then you mentioned that RTH is available through the compatible controller, I was then like OK 😅 Since I have compatible controllers that have OS4, I'm seriously considering getting the Neo. The main thing I can see myself getting it for is for those really tight spaces, and maybe for close follows. But as always, thanks for a complete review and coverage of the DJI Fly update 👍🏾
@@DMProductions That's great to hear how fun it is!! Yes, I agree, firmware update will probably include the return feature. Looks like DJI was trying to get the Neo out to market quickly, so now I don't know if you've heard or seen, but they're making an announcement about Pro on Thursday. Most are speculating Action 5 Pro, but I think it may be that and a whole Pro series lineup. We'll see! 😁
Thanks for flagging these warnings and giving your good recommendations. I’m finding that I cannot take photos in 4:3 when using manual control in the phone app. Even though the settings in the phone app are set to 4:3, the resulting photos are 16:9. When I use a controller (NC3 or RC2), I can set the ratio as 4:3 and that is what the resulting photos are; but whenever I go back to manual control on the phone the photos are in 16:9 (which also means they are 9 megapixels, not 12). Have you found that, or am I making some kind of mistake? Thanks again. UPDATE: Please ignore all of the above! The Fly app has been updated this morning and the glitch has been removed. For clarity, using the Neo with only my iPhone and the app on Manual mode, setting photos to 4:3 now does produce 12 megapixel 4:3 images.
Hi, do you think that the fly away is covered by a dji care refresh if you fly without the RC ? I guess, there is no log when flying with the phone or directly with the drone panel !
You are better off having the app ready to stop then use virt sticks in manual to bring it back or just check the area properly and settings, happened to me last week but I thought a head :-)
Any problems while flying over the sea? I’ve brought mine to Antigua and been seeing all the posts about do not fly over water, it even says it in the manual apparently.
Buying a controller will undermine the $199 advantage. Another PROBLEM question. Some youtubers mentioned it had serious problem with flying backwards in direction track mode (cam facing you, you moving forward but drone moving backward). It loses track of you somehow, sometimes. Do you find it to be a serious problem? Thanks in advance!
I bought the drone only one, ended up ordering the fly more version as realised I needed the controller and the extra batteries. Ironically I’m off to Switzerland tomorrow for a driving trip and will be up a mountain with it, originally I thought the mobile would be enough but soon realised it was not
Many thanks for sharing; I just purchased the Neo and (on the Fly App for my phone) couldn't find any RTH setting which was a worry!; main concern for me is noise this makes; might be a tiny Drone and hard to see however attracts to much attention!; maybe they will introduce some low noise props!
It should remember the gps location when taking off from your palm and return to that spot if contol signal is lost, would be suitable for any location except a boat.
Great points and practical advice 👍 That said, the Neo should only be used as intended and keep it close and have fun. Think there will some firmware updates soon and the next version is going to be very interesting. At the price, I might just get one to keep in my car and certainly for those quick shots with family and friends👍👍
Been using mine for a week now on flat dry land. I didn't get the fly more combo, just the drone and 1 battery, and I had the exact same concerns you just mentioned. If I were to do a Dronie from a bridge or cliff for example, I think it would be a good idea to actually stand a few meters away from the edge during start up, just so I know I can reach out my hand safely to land the drone when it gets back.
did you update that the release for the DJI meal that supposedly fix that because they knew that and now you can use all the controllers so they should add a return to home function when you're using a Wi-Fi a disconnection so it should come home if the Wi-Fi is still there be sure there'll be many more updates for this drone
I saw someone mention Return to Subject... They didn't demo it. Only said something about standing still for three seconds. Would that work if you lost WiFi connection?
Im looking into getting my first drone and like the Neo, especially the price ....BUT the mini series offer more features . What would you go for as a first drone . Mini 2 , 3 ( pro) or start with the neo . I cant make my mind up as having a FOMO and dont to be left wanting more within 6 months . Decisions decisions??
I’d go for the neo first, but only because of its price, then go for the mini 4 with its controller. The controller makes it even better, but of course it does require practise to get its full potential out.
Great video! I think the problem is the mobile phone mode. Cause the GPS is not working and the WIFI signal actually don't let do make RTH, so I have no hope they solve this issue.
Can you fly the Neo around other people while it's in follow mode without a controller? I'm concerned about what happens if the drone mistakes someone else for you. I'd like to know if this is possible in areas where you're not alone, and what happens if it starts following another person. Maybe you could test it once with the drone connected to your phone and again in a similar setting without the phone connection.
Happened to me yesterday. I was flying low on " Follow me" standalone without the app and the low battery alarm went off and in a matter of second it just started moving around on it's own, so it was about head high but it started to drift. I was able to run to it and put my palm below it so it landed, I was not using the phone. Better to stop using once the battery alarm goes off and immediately put your palm under it when flying the drone with palm control only.
Excelente vídeo as always. Great to know about these issues. I ordered my the day that was launched here in US. I hope that they fix these problems before I get it delivered.
I bought the fly more combo but use it with the RC2 controller, Must admit it was 15 MPH wind and flying out of the hand using the modes built in drone really struggled to function, but on a fly using controller it performed much better I found of course not that quick as my Air 3 but still pleased
I had the same thing happen to me while flying in FPV normal mode. The drone got to 14% and there was no more power, so it landed itself right then and there, thankfully it was in my front yard 5meters away from me and not over water. Tip to the wise, when you hit 20% come home.
It's really not that risky. Mobile App Control reaches 50 meters BEST case scenario. In fact, it has worse signal than the Tello, that had two WiFi antennas for the task. So you wouldn't fly it really far. And you still have the option to search for it in the map or make sound/light signals from the Neo, both in the Profiles screen. It's almost impossible to lose it, unless you are flying in a cliff or over the water, which is, yeah, not a great idea.
in europe the combo is 350 whereas the almost barebone drone is 200 eur; For those 150 eur extra you get 2 more batteries and a controller; (if you get a single battery you pay 40 eur) so not a bad deal to go for the bundle. The backward compatibility is pitiful cause i have the avata and my goggles / fpv remote controller 2 aren't compatible; DJI please fix
Great video, brother! I picked up the DJI pocket 3 yesterday, I can't wait to unbox it. It truly looks like an amazing pocket cam......AND I grabbed the neo off your recommendation. I am so excited for it to arrive on September 30 here in the 🇺🇸. Hope your night is going well, my friend.

There are other drones that are more fit for purpose in these fringe cases. And hey, if you lose it you're only out $200 (and guilty of adding to the world's trash problem 😂)
Maby they can make a menu option so you can chose if you want to use this feature thats already in the drone. Then everybody that dont want RTH can leave it deactivated.
@@oldretireddudeif you mostly start this drone without the remote to follow you from point a to point b, then it would be a problem if the drone suddenly wants to go back to point a. If I had to choose a drone to inactivate RTH I would choose the Neo 😊
Darren, Thanks for this and all your informative video's about the Neo. I hope you can make some nice Luts for the Neo soon that can be bought. I use some of your Luts for the Mini 4 Pro and Air 3 for nearly all my dronevideo's. Greetings from 🇳🇱
You should tell people why that’s the case. If you were flying with no controller, then you have a Wi-Fi connection between the drone and your phone. With a controller you are connected to the GPS signal like other drones from DJI. If you leave your house, your Wi-Fi disconnects at the end of your driveway usually. Same thing with your drone. Keep it close.
I loved my DJI spark, such an advanced drone for its time, way ahead of its time. The only downsides of it were the relatively low video quality( still a very good video for its time), and the limited range as far as distance. I ended up getting the parabolic reflectors to enhance the distance and that works well as long as you have the antennas pointed in the right direction).
@@DavidReynolds-kr6yh me too!! I ended up flying it around the Eiffel Tower which was wild. With the FCC hack I would get 1.5km with the parabolics which was insane at the time for the size.
Rth should just be as standard on every means of control, wth were they thinking? If it's a case of needing sat lock before flying and doing this to save start up time I get it, but we have a phone in our hand with sat position so just use those coordinates for rth, that would be better anyway. I heard the explanation that rth might cause the drone to crash into stuff where as if it just stays put you can go back and get it , so why not give an option to choose which you want depending on where you are flying ?
wait, why tho? it has gps right? why won't it come back to the home spot, I dont get it. Its supposed to work without controllers so it comes back to your palm, so it does rth kinda
Hi. I have two question for these drone. First. If you use controller does he have option back home if lost signal? And second question. I have one extra controller from my crashed Mini 2. Can I use him for these drone?
1st question yes, RTH is only available using a controller. 2nd question no, you need the new controller. Even the controller from the Avata won’t work though it looks identical. It’s a new transmission system. Don’t waste your $
Its unclear to me why they don't use the gps and rth in palm and phone control mode really seems a selling point vs the x1. I guess it might delay a few people since it has to wait until it states (guess in voice) 'ready to fly' and 'updated home point' before allowing you to start a action. Any idea/reason you can see why they build in a gps etc etc but don't use it in its basic mode of use ?
Super video as very valuable and hopefully RTH will be implemented. My first Neo drowned on Saturday and today arrived finally DJI Care and Flyaway replacement but for 90€ 💸 but still dji Care make sence...
This is not as much of a problem if you consider it will not really fly very far away on the phone. Don't fly it far away, and above all, don't fly it behind anything. Agreed though, it should return home if it loses contact for more than a minute or so. This should be an easy firmware fix.
I bought a stand alone unit, mistake, so I’ve had to shell out for extra batteries and RC to give me full control, there are risks given its simplicity. I’m new to drones so it’s a steep learning curve…
Buy a kit and keep the stand alone unit as a spare. Then you will also have four batteries. I bought a kit and concider buying a stand alone as a spare, and for the extra battery.
Mine got blown over twice by blustery 20mph winds, obviously it just switched off and fell. Its so light Im sure it could survive several hundred feet falls onto grass, Im waiting to see its freefall speed.
Something very unusual happened with me when I was flying my DJI NEO. My connection to the Drone got lost even I was using a RC and the drone fell without any control maybe trying to get to RTH but it was insane. It fell on a building I suppose I could only find its battery on the ground. This was very strang experience and I may make a video about it soon.
I do not see the issue..you should still be able to see the drone...The Neo is a drone...the Mini4 Pro is a drone...The Citroen 2cv is a car..the Ferrari Dino is also a car...BUT they are very different...the pilot / driver needs to be aware of the differences between and act accordingly...and not expect the two to perform the same way.
I would’ve thought that flying using the buttons on the drone which means you don’t need to use the controller or phone it couldn’t lose signal because there is no signal everything is automated
Nice little cheeky link to your products for sale 😂😂. Don’t worry it’s winter now they hate the cold mine won’t even fly now it states too cold to fly 🥶😂
I got a similar issue the drone was far from me and no way to get it back. I just called "Hey Fly" and switch to "follow". The drone came back to follow me.
This was mainly designed to be a selfie drone. Not for high altitude. And its super cheap, so dont be so *dramatic*. No RTH is not a HUGE safety risk. Its disappointing without it, but come on. Ive been flying DJI drones since the Phantom 1. There was no RTH for many years. We did fine without it. Again, RTH is a great feature, but hardly a HUGE safety risk without it.

Darren, Thanks for this and all your informative video's about the Neo. I hope you can make some nice Luts for the Neo soon that can be bought. I use some of your Luts for the Mini 4 Pro and Air 3 for nearly all my dronevideo's. Greetings from 🇳🇱
if you set sharpness on the remote and later you fly neo by it self (no controller) does the sharpness stay -2 or resets?
it resets back to standard sharpness .
I'm waiting for the Neo Pro with DLOGM and a bit more power :) - this gives me flashbacks to my old DJI Spark.
I need that drone too 😂
I loved my DJI spark, such an advanced drone for its time, way ahead of its time.
Just got mine,do you know if the DJI mic can record audio with the neo
wait, why tho? it has gps right? why won't it come back to the home spot, I dont get it.
Don’t waste your $
@@robknight9406 thanks man
@@perazdera5639 pssst find out what express LRS is
Radiomaster is a good step 1, the TX16 is mint
I wonder if it handles different with a controller vs the phone.
Oh no! Hope you have better luck with the new one !
Its on Dji Neo manual, not to fly over water, drops etc I guess thats why when you fly it with the phone they give us the warnings
I wish I could install a lut right into the drone, then turn it on/off with my controller, like I do when I record video on my iPhone
Mine got blown over twice by blustery 20mph winds, obviously it just switched off and fell.
Its so light Im sure it could survive several hundred feet falls onto grass, Im waiting to see its freefall speed.
Great video!!
FINALLY an honest review
Thank you for this
Got my Neo great little drone just hope they release a pro vision 😁
Doesn't really sound like a big deal if your flying real close by.
True, I was flying close by to me in the examples but I know a lot won’t
My dji neo update firmware The video quality is dark at night under the lights in the house, before the update it's fine, why?
Something very unusual happened with me when I was flying my DJI NEO. My connection to the Drone got lost even I was using a RC and the drone fell without any control maybe trying to get to RTH but it was insane. It fell on a building I suppose I could only find its battery on the ground. This was very strang experience and I may make a video about it soon.
Can you do a comparison between dju mini and neo? They are almost same price
Is it possible to use USB WIFI range extenders like use for DJI Tello?
Can you use goggles 3 and rc2 with the neo ?
why is there a square around you in the youtube footage?
I do not see the issue..you should still be able to see the drone...The Neo is a drone...the Mini4 Pro is a drone...The Citroen 2cv is a car..the Ferrari Dino is also a car...BUT they are very different...the pilot / driver needs to be aware of the differences between and act accordingly...and not expect the two to perform the same way.
RTH is a must..even for wifi using a phone
Another problem: GEOfencing issues!
Can the neo track you while in a car? Or maybe can it track a car?
Probably, but not over 20 km/h
From my testing it doesn’t track vehicles
Great info!!
Thanks so much for disclosing this info!
I just saw a video of a range test and it has RTH. The drone turned around about 50% of battery left.
RC 2 freezes after update too. Let's just say the firmware updates need to keep coming
I still had wifi then. The point is not to send it beyond wifi limit.
How to control camera lens position (like in the RC) with the phone apps?
Can you do a video how it real the range test via phone wifi
it's good if you're a beginner and you're not s2pd 👌
My Neo has stopped flying! I took a flight! Then it kept asking me to calibrate the IMU and it never worked again! I will return it!
have you tried doing what it says ?
@@uptowndisco2 yes. 24 times!
Will the mini 3 controller with the built in screen work with the neo?
No, only controllers using O4, like the Mini 4.
@@Larsema1 dang it
You the best
Wise words 👌👍
All the old users needs an RC N1 compatibility update for buy the Neo.
Can’t seem to upload images videos
Good 1 Darren
Thank god, I never fly drones without controller. Never tried with my spark, my tello and won't try with my neo.
Is it possible to set a password?
Is there risk someone "hack" and fly it away?
This what happen to other videos I watch it lost signal in the cliff so it ended hang in the air
