The color grid technology by E Ink is named "Kaleido". The technology in the picture frame is ACeP or "Gallery 3" also by E Ink. They recently released a version with 6 pigments but this is not available yet (sept 2023).

Individually cutting out all the flashing frames must have been no joke in the edit. Immense visuals 🤯

What are you doing here slowmo boy
Funny to see you here 😁
I worked on the original Amazon Kindle, and one time I had left a prototype device in the window sill for a few days and then found that the screen had turned completely dark, although it cleared up the next time I rebooted it and refreshed the screen. My theory about what happened there was that the photovoltaic effect caused the screen charge to very slowly change, causing the black ink balls to eventually drift to the surface.
Fluffy lore drop
Hey wait I know you
What kind of microscope did you use to go supermicro? It’s very dope!
Everytime I watch your videos I feel like I'm watching some 90's documentary about science stuff. I love every second.
You could talk about the most mind numbingly boring and i would still listen for hours, ur content is top tier ^-^
Once again, a truly beautiful video.
Regarding the diffusion layers: you might be able to get acceptable results by squishing a droplet of water between the display and a piece of glass (similarly to microscope slides). It should work best if you find a liquid with a refractive index as close as possible to the display's transparent plastic. You can also experiment with oil, alcohol or water with some added salt or sugar to find the best match
Love your new brand refresh!
This is probably one of your best videos
when technology meets art in a perfect marriage we have things like this video
thank you so much for this.. please do for CRT displays next :D
3:37 made me laugh out loud. Brilliant! Thank you for another amazing video!
Is your focus manually controlled, auto, or keyframed? It's insanely precise. As a macro photographer, your videography skills blow my mind.
lazy posy on how you do those macro shots ?
like video setup etc...
I love this channel. And I thougt the clock screens video were already interesting enough
Posy can make paper intresting
yay posy
ive got a smartwatch that uses eink with analog hands i think its called fossil hybrid
E-Paper tech is really cool. There's something magical to me about the way they keep their image. It's like having a little printed image that can mysteriously transmute when connected to power.
I keep recognizing you across YT because the cat in your profile pic looks exactly like mine lol
It sucks how frequently you hear about cool technologies being held back by a single company holding the patents for it
That's why patents expire. In this case, since they last 20 years and the technology first reached maturity and became commercially viable in 2004, we're likely to see the end of E-ink's monopoly soon.
Prysm Systems have a patent for laser phosphor displays which are insanely cool but it seems like theyll hold on that patent forever and never release the displays to the consumer market....
thats ofc until the patent expires... but thats a long time from now...
Lol, we wish, @@AlphaetusPrime - There are many loopholes companies use to re-patent things. Isn't that why Insulin is so expensive? They keep changing it by a few molecules.
@@AlphaetusPrimeI think it will be better but not perfect, I imagine the patents that are expiring are not for the more advanced tech. Though I suppose that now companies can advance on the tech in their own way and will actually be able to sell displays without infringing on the patents for the 'basic'/fundamental tech.
What's point of holding on to patents without making money, losing all your R&D investment only to let the patent expire?
Posy could literally make paint drying interesting.
He could literally make water waving interesting
10/10 idea, would watch paint dry for hours if Posy is involved.
I would honestly expect him to make paint drying video someday
@@varganyamuvek He already made boiling water interesting so yes.
Sixty Symbols already made a video about it and it's really interesting
You might try putting water or another fluid on it to see if it neutralizes the antiglare texture.
oooh yes! like how frosted glass appears clear with vegetable oil on it!
Exactly this, Ive done this and works pretty well, makes such rough but transparent surfaces become clear. Put a cover slide and then fill in between with glycerin or immersion oil.
That's a good idea.
I did now! Thanks for the suggestion (also to others in other comments). Lazy video here: ruclips.net/video/cY1neR2iHPE/видео.html
This is genuinely one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever viewed in my life. Your work is second to none Posy. ❤
You get the best shots. I didn't want to look away for a second. I mean, I said you should sell prints, and I still think you should, but the magic is in the moving image! These videos ARE the artworks and this channel is your gallery!
E ink Displays are very fascinating, and seeing them in micro vision is something else. 🤓❤
Absolutely blown away by the honeycomb display, immensely beautiful
Now I am studying to be an editing director and motion designer. I found your wonderful channel a long time ago. I was in a creative crisis because of boring jobs... But now I'm trying to achieve the same level of cleanliness and accuracy in video editing as you have. You inspire me incredibly much! Thank you for your videos!
Who cares 😂
Ik heb echt immens respect voor je werk man.
feels awesome to not understand your language at all but i know what this means lol
Gekoloniseerd
The fact that you dont need to translate this from dutch to understand it in english
I like how I can read this without having to use google translate
WOW. I had a pretty rudimentary understanding of E-Ink displays before. These extremely close up shots were AMAZING and actually made me understand how this stuff works! Especially the color e-ink stuff was amazing and something I hadn't seen before!
this work really is SUPERB videography! 😮❤
Yeah I thought there were balls of each colour that moved to the top/bottom so the close up of the b&w clock display where you can see that the balls don't move and its just the ink inside them was fascinating
This e-paper stuff always fascinated me since the first day I saw an e-book tablet as a kid, while it's really niche as a product, I've always hoped it as a cool futuristic replacement for certain things in the future, like paintings, books in libaries etc.
Doubt it'll actually become anything big until some sort of breakthrough new invention happens, or until patents are made public.
There are devices like the Kindle Scribe these days that let you write notes at a really good latency of sub 10ms if I recall correctly. Still a niche, but the tech is definitely improving, albeit, very slowly
Like @fouzr said, I have a ReMarkable and it has made a huge difference in my life. I am a habitual note taker and journal-er, and it fills a niche that a tablet never did for me. The price point is terrible and I honestly can't wait for the patents to run out so that e-paper is made public.
The thing that sold me on my ReMarkable was the fact that it lasts for a week on a single charge. E-paper is such an efficient display technology. As long as you do not need a high refresh rate, it's perfect.
@@HappyJackington yup, the reMarkable is an excellent example. I own one myself, and love using it on the daily. And as a bonus, it’s a fairly open embedded Linux machine, which lets you tinker with it quite a bit
Tho I think even after the patents have expired, the cost of manufacturing it will still be quite higher than any LCD panel. The yields of those panels aren’t great afaik
One interesting application is that it’s being adapted for luxury cars to create color changing liveries! It’s still in the prototype stage but I think it has real potential.
@@yeetusvanitas9800 I mean that's cool and all but helps nobody.
I have an e-ink device that I use for note taking in class called the Supernote! Because it doesn’t have a backlight and it only uses energy when changing colors the battery lasts for over a week. The writing feel is also much better than writing on a glass screen
NEW POSY VIDEO WOOOOOOOOOOOOO
LOVE YOUR STUFF MAN
Posy's videos always inspire me to keep studying the nature of the small things. Thanks posy
Seriously you're a true artist. Thank you for the amount of time you have spent on videomaking, but also on music, creative videos, and script writing (I see how concise yet un-rushed you are). This video was a symphony of your talents and it was beautiful.
Posy: experimental musician who makes documentaries as music videos.
E ink has always been the closest to magic of any display tech! I love paper books so it's the closest thing. Such an analog feel.
2:31 This is also how my child drawing tablet worked that I had with me during car rides. I could draw on that and then when I wanted to make the canvas clean again, I would move a big thing over the screen and the draw again.
I eventually figured out that I was pulling some magnetic power or something to the top of the screen. Was a really cool children toy tbh.
Each of your videos is like watching a really good short film. It's clear these take lots and lots of effort to make, and it's absolutely worth it, as each and every one has beem amazing so far, including this one. Keep up the amazing work!
I was gonna say "dude, where do you get this music from? it seems like the perfect videoclip" and it's yours! 🤪 Thanks for all of this content! 💛
When a super macro shot of a kindle makes you want to cry, you know the video's good
I've known how e-paper works for a long time but seeing it like this is absolutely magical. Thank you for your hard work and fantastic video, Posy!
posy is just casually like "yeah i made this video, and composed the music, and made these comics"
The one with the damaged electrode display at the beginning is a black Sony PRS-350 e-Reader.
That’s awesome! Always wondered how these things work :) You manage to make any topic entertaining and enjoyable to watch!
Your production quality is soo good! Love the visuals, fun music you make and your narration, always watch all the way through when you post something new.
I'm poor as f and live in dangerous place so I can't really afford to pay you, but I hope what you have from patreon or selling music is enough for you and you don't lose curiosity in interesting cool (or hot?) things to share your fascination about with us.
still waiting for this tech to be made into tattoo ink.
I'm gonna be honest. I don't know what your luck is, but to have EVERY deodorant at Albert Heijn be tagged with bonus is like a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Until you realize you don't have a bonus card because you don't shop at AH since you try to cut costs. That store is expensive, man...
Your auper macro shots are so incredible to look at. Made even moreso when the subject's typical mundanity is taken into account. Even the most simple things can actually be quite amazing.
Koreader is a wonderful alternative to awful ereader software! It almost seems consumer technology from the past few decades is all a rehash from xerox parc sometimes ;) Fantastische video! Altijd leuk om dingen in de achtergrond te begrijpen.
its always awesome to know how clever people can use simple ideas to make awesome products, great video as always
They get the ink bubbles the same way they get the smell in scratch and sniff stickers. It's called microencapsulation.
Dang, this chan is like Ahoy in its formula. I can dig it. EDIT: Formerly known as RetroAhoy?
I thought so too!
Same kind of editing and niche interests but they're presented so well
Dude even does his own music. (Posy)
Song at 0:18
Vanilla Coffee
Album : LCD
( of course )
Doesn't E-paper use power only when the state is changed and something else is displayed?
6:05 XD
great video as always, the most insane footage on youtube
For a while I had a pebble time smartwatch with an e-ink color display. Easily my most favorite watch I've ever owned.
god i love posy's music, huge portal 2 vibes
Yet another awesome video :)
If you ever make a sequel to this, consider taking a look at e-ink monitors intended for use with computers.
Its a blessed day when Posy uploads literally anything
The music makes me feel nostalgic even though I never heard it.
Love it!!
Those comics just cement to me that you really are the most talented YoutTuber on the platform
Posy: "...which makes it very hard to make decent supermicro shots."
Also Posy: shows minutes of amazing supermicro shots.
The topic was already super interesting, and then add your superb cinematography on top and we have another awesome video!
Your channel is basically an obsession generator! I'm addicted to all things with a VFD since that video!
whats name of the first song that goes boop beeeeep booop beeeep?
Reusing songs I see? Thankfully, Vanilla Coffee is one of my absolute FAVORITES!!! Thank you for the content, and the tunes :)
This man could make anything boring interesting in 10 minutes
Edit: HE ADDED THE SEGMENTS THING OH MY GOD
I'd like to see IMOD (Mirasol) in action. Qualcomm only showed it in their Toq smartwatch but it was a persistent high refresh reflective color display (how do I order those adjectives?).
Love the video! Love the music too. Trying to find the song used in the first half of the video but can't find it on bandcamp or spotify.
thank you for staying curious. you never disappoint whenever you post a new video.
Who makes that clock and thermometer?
It's a Xiaomi E-ink clock LYWSD02
I recently finished my apprenticeship as an electronics technician, and the final project I was assigned was to design driver circuitry for a very simple e-ink bargraph display (6 segments: t dots + background). They’re simultaneously very simple to drive, yet also very hard to drive _well_ (note in the macro of the thermometer refresh how it has to do multiple write/clear cycles and that during them, the segment sizes grow, and that the segments that are “off” have a gray outline).
I have the same thermometer. It gets worse over time. After 6 months the "burn in" is very noticeable.
Still much more readable than LCDs though.
i hope e-paper someday becomes full color and bright, so i can read comics and manga on something that feels like a single piece of paper
HORRIFYING MUSIC IN THIS VIDEO.
Correction: You'd want an e-paper thermostat that uses your breakthrough 9-segment display.
E-paper is my favorite display technology since it can bee seen in bright light, There was even a dress using it to change color. I wonder if some water or oil on the screen might help fill in the roughness of the screen diffuser and might make macro shots easier.
Wow, super cool! It was crazy to hear that Xerox Parc created some form of this tech first, it seems like if you look back at any piece of modern tech they already invented it long ago haha.
Hey Posy, I'd like to know what thermometer/clock you bought! I'd love to have one too and these look really neat.
This channel is my absolute favorite thing on RUclips.
Why do they use rgb? Shouldnt it be CMY since its not a transmissive display?
I use “Sounds From the Library” every night on repeat to help me sleep. It’s been great help for a year now.
This technology might have been ok... For 1985, but certainly not today
e-ink really are the tech of the future because they are literal sci-fi material. Look at the photo e-ink you showed, that's sci-fi!
I want an e-ink calculator.
I am from post-soviet country and hearing this music in a tutorial is sooo cool, because in Soviet cinematography they used same type of music😅
E-readers are like finger-banging: they are both digital and analogue.
Wait. Did Xerox also invent electronic paper? What didn't they invent?
I like how Xerox invented both this, the first Graphical User Interface based desktop PC, the first WIMP GUI, and basically said “eh let’s not even try to pursue this game changing innovations as much as we can”.
your videos are so well made
Saw you post Microgalaxies on Bandcamp before this uploaded, had me excited for what you were up to this time. Wasn't expecting e-Paper though! Awesome video 💚
1:43 was synced so well
My dad worked on the Nook with e paper he helped design some new e-paper tech and he even had a ball explaing how e-paper works
Disliked for not explaining how the screen can selectively flip the cells
I feel like you'd have interesting opinions on ambigrams
what's your place for finding eink displays?
what’s the music at 8:43?
1:48
"every half hour these display do a full refresh"
And you managed to capture how many of them???
You need to do some 30 minute vids of just those display visuals and your tunes for people to put on.
I just love your newest single. It feels so like Amanita Design's tunes
what an incredible channel!! hope to see you at 10 mil!!!!
Why this shit scaring me at 1:00 in?
